I am moving into a house with a nice fully finished garage. I have decided to go with a 45k btu Hot Dawg. When looking, I do not see a lot of digital thermostats used. Is there a reason? I have been looking at a bunch of $30-60 digital single stage thermos. It doesnt have to be programable, just seems nicer. Are they just plan old cheap junk? Do they not do well in the garage? Could someone maybe post a few different make modles that have worked well for them?

Thanks in advance!!!

I have a cheap honeywell and the stupid thing will not heat when the temperature is below 32 degrees! WTF! who designs a thermostat that if it gets to cold you can't turn on the heat! so definitely make sure of the temperature design of the stat.

In for some info also.
I had a regular dial thermostat & never had a problem.
Bought a cheaper lux or Honeywell (can't remember) digital programmable & it worked for 5 or 6 years, then just quit.
I recently bought a new Honeywell 5 / 2 day digital programmable & that doesn't work either when it's cold in the garage. (RTH2300B)
If I take the thermostat off & bring it in the house to warm up, then hook it back up in the garage it works.
Pretty useless when a thermostat doesn't turn a furnace on when it's cold out.

Buy a White Rodgers from a dealer and you'll have no more problems. The other brands just don't cut it in quality. They also come with a 5 year warranty. 1F86-344 is the standard heat/cool non-programmable. I have the 1F95-1277 in my house. If you have any problems down the road you just walk into the place you bought it from and exchange it with no hassle.

Agreed... When I ran out of gas a few weeks ago, I had to use my heat gun to warm up the thermostat to get the heat on! Absolutely no reason for this IMHO, but I suspect there may be a reason I don't know of, such as a heater/furnace that when it freezes can be damaged if fired up cold? But my unit heater doesn't care, and in 15 minutes we were back up to temperature.

The reason your thermostat won't work under 32 degrees is that they used regular ic parts that are rated 0 to 70 degrees C , which is 32 degrees F. It is just another built in china to the cheapest price. Honeywell is not a top company anymore.

None of them are anymore , it all about the buck. buy cheap and sell hi let the consumer pay the real price later and by the way the main reason this all came about was because of the Walmart mentality and you now have the Home Depo's , Menards , Lowes and Low ball this and low ball that , That is way we are getting this cheap ****.
When the only place you could buy a stat was from a heating supplier , we got good stuff not any more.

I use a cheap programmable stat. It goes to 40* at its lowest point! which I REALLY like so things don't freeze in the garage.
I do have it programmed to kick on and bring up to 70 an hour before I'm up, so I can go have my coffee, smoke, and hit the 'new posts' button on GJ

Honeywell........ Hum. :headscrat
So cheap it doesn't even have a model number anywhere on it.

As you can see, it has been in a rather rough environment for a few years and is still going strong.

I am still in the process of my getting my heater up and running but I have been considering trying to run a newer Wi-Fi type thermostat. This way I can bump up temperature before I even head out to the garage.

My thermostat thread.

Biggest problem is not being able to adjust the spread from on to off. The digital I show in the thread has a less than one degree spread from off back down to on, and if you cut a jumper on the board, the spread increases to a little over a degree.

The used oil heater was never getting up to full heat before it shut off. I reinstalled the mechanical Honeywell and it goes lower in temp (35°F says the specs) so I can save fuel for when I really need it, and I've got about a 3 degree spread on it right now, so it runs for a lot longer when it does run.

Really need an old round Honeywell mercury thermostat. At least it has markings on it you can read and when you adjust and readjust it, you can consistently get it back to the same place, but I'm not sure how low a temp they go. Would prefer at least down to 40°F. Heater mfg says to keep it 50°F or more, but the heater seems to operate just fine at 40 or so.

This is EXACTLY why we only sell W/R stats where I work.

For the heat in the shop I have been using a Honeywell T87 stat & sub-base, it was cheap and we installed dozens thru the years. The temperature is kept at 52F so setback isn't an issue.
