I am just about done hanging sheetrock and have a question about my tv. The tv will sit on a shelf about 12 feet away from where the dish receiver and dvd player will sit. What cords or wires should I run between the two before I close it up? Thanks....Mark

Run a 1-1/2" or 2" conduit with long sweeps at each end, so that you can pull cables through with the ends on them.
That way you are future-proof.

I agree with the conduit... would protect the cables from the elements and make it A LOT easier to fish the wires through or change them if need be.

The conduit is a nice call so you can change out the cables if need be, but quick question about the TV itself... is it HDTV or Standard Def?

If HD, then (if your tv and boxes support it) just an HDMI for each component. If you do not have HDMI then you will need component cables (blue, red, green)+ stereo cables (white/red rca).

If you are on standard definition then you may want to look at either basic coax or stereo / video cables.

This also assumes that you want audio through your tv. If you are going to run audio through a separate receiver / amp then you route the audio through there.

More information may be needed to help better diagnose though.

When the electricians ran the new service they ran empty plastic conduit to the garage so that I could run cable and telephone service to it. They just ran it inside the garage though since I didn't know how I was going to lay out the garage at the time. As it ended up the TV ended up on the far wall but on the same end. I would go with 2 inch if possible though.

First piece of advice - buy all your parts from monoprice - you'll save a ton of money.

Also agree on the conduit for future proofing. I assume you arleady have power at the TV source, so we're just talking other cables?

Since this is a new project, I'm assuming you are installing a relatively new TV (HD flat panel).

Use HDMI since it carries audio and video in 1 cord - easy to run. I'd run two, since most AV receivers aldeady do HDMI switching. The two will cover your dish receiver and dvd player.

I would also run an IR repeater. This would allow you to completely box in or otherwise hide your components (dish receiver and dvd player) but still be able to control them by pointing the remote at the TV. These are somewhat expensive, but useful if you want to keep everything hidden.

Here's some parts:

-HDMI in wall cable - 15 feet for $13.50 each.
-HDMI wall plate (for a clean look) $10.95 each. Place one behind the TV mount location and another at the component location. Use the In-wall HDMI cable to run between these.

-Regular HDMI cable (for the component to wall and TV to wall connections) - $3.56 each. And to think some people pay $50 for the "monster" version of these at local stores... for shame.

-Flat screen mount - ultra-slim with tilt feature, just $18.95

Unfortunately I can't find any remote repeaters on Monoprice, so check out SmartHome.

50" HD in the garage=very nice!

If your audio receiver supports hdmi switching that is the way to go (might need to get the specs on that since I presume you will have an audio receiver with surround sound). That way, you just run an hdmi cable from your satellite box & dvd player directly to the receiver, then one out to your TV. The audio will change when you change it on the receiver.

Which model is it so we can review?

As for the cable source mentioned by jmack, I concur. I have bought several hdmi cables from them and compared them to higher end and cannot tell a difference other than the price is substantially cheaper!

Boy is that advise great from jmack. I bot a HDMI cable for my LCD TV 3 years ago. Cost me about $20, shorter piece of monster cable was over $100 from Best Buy. I just bought 2 ceiling speakers from them last month, works great. I bought 4 times the length of speaker cable that I found at Radio Shack for less than 1/2 the price. Great values at Monoprice.
