Hi GJ!
A close friend of mine became interested in woodworking after attending a class that I taught at my shop last year.

Since then, he bought a house and has been busily working to setup his own garage as a woodworking shop, complete with the ability to work from rough lumber onward.

Next week, I'm heading over there for a house/garage warming party, and I thought it would be cool to bring him something to further his new hobby.

My initial thought is that I have some rough cut lumber that was milled from trees taken from my property. He had admired a table I built from the wood, and thought it was really cool that it was built from "my trees". I would additionally bring him a case of his favorite IPA beers.

As garage guys, would my token gesture be well appreciated, or should I go back to brainstorming other ideas?

Thanks!

Bob R.

I think its a great gesture. Custom and OOAK items are always welcomed. This material has meaning and he can turn it into something to be proud of.

The beer will definitely help the process too lol.

Wood from your property is a pretty cool gift idea. If you wanted to do something silly, a framed picture of Norm Abram with the text "...there is no more important safety rule than to wear these: safety glasses" would be kind of fun.

Lumber and beer would be a super gift. I like the Norm Abraham poster idea to add to it.

The wood & IPA are good ideas. Pictures, posters, any decorating ideas are not good ideas. I like my friends & I like their decorating, in their homes! Unless they happen to hit the decorating just right I'll thank them, then store the item till I can get rid of it. Never try to decorate someone else's house.

In addition to the serious gift consider a custom certificate that gives credit for the class, and a promotion to 'master wood butcher'.
