My dad was a Mechanic. I started helping him in the Garages where he worked at age 11. Back then that was how a young person learned a trade. I became a Mechanic and I worked in Garages. Today a Dad can't teach his son his trade because of insurance companies rules.

Well I have always considered a Garage to be a place where a Mechanic repaired cars, trucks, farm equipment, etc.

But, in today's world I do not even know what a garage is. What most people call a Garage has nothing to do with repair.

It irritates me, to no end, for people to call a room attached to their house with overhead doors, that they park a vehicle in, a Garage.

Thanks fer allowing me to throw this little fit.

Around here, most two car garages are just extra storage units full of stuff the houses won't hold any longer . Toys, workout eq., beds, etc. With the vehicles of today being high tech, few people use their garage to work on their vehicles as they have to take them to dealers or service centers to be serviced anyway. Most places in my town that service vehicles are called "service centers" not "Joe's Garage" etc..... ..

The term "garage" will have to stick though, regardless of what we think about how the room is being used, just because we don't know what else to call it. Its not like a bathroom, where some people call them wash rooms. A garage is built to park a vehicle in, but can be used for anything I would say. Too many turn their one car garages in to dens/rec rooms... just to get the extra living space. JMO

What's in a name? Barn...garage...shop, it's more about the use these structures are put to that actually determine what they are.The dictionary definition talks about motor vehicle storage, but that term has been changed over the years as well.
By federal definition, a motor vehicle is one used in commerce for profit, but an automobile is used outside commerce at no commercial gain. The actual use is a primary indicator of how some things are identified. We live in interesting times.

welp, first off, a place that repairs mechanical things is a SERVICE SHOP not a garage.. always has been always will be, just because people called them garages doesn't make it correct, kinda like me say'n I have a 350 chevy motor.. people all say it, but it's not a motor it's an engine..

a dad can still teach his sons the trade either at home in the garage, or at the service shop after hours/week ends . off the books, and if they get hurt you don't go after the insurance..
They can even work all summer at the service shop.. you just have to keep them out of sight of the customers.... you know those silly child labor laws and all.. but that should not be hard to do, as your insurance that you see as the problem doesn't allow the customers in the shop area in the first place..
but I digress

In addition to being the storage and repair place for your car, a garage has potential as an incubator of an enterprise.

Hewlett Packard, Apple Computer and others came from garages.

It's just a term, and obviously is not universal.

I called the attached structure to my house a "garage" since it's used to store cars. I also have a "shop", which is where I work on cars and other stuff.

At the risk of being in agreement with Keel, I also prefer to call an engine just that. To me, a 'motor' is powered by an external source (like electricity) where as an 'engine'(at least an ICE) makes it's own power.

The whole motor vs. engine thing is a tired old argument, based on personal opinion. It's perfectly acceptable to call an internal combustion engine a motor. Check your dictionary.

Right, lots of words have merged to mean the same thing. Definitely interchangeable words in my eyes.

To me a Garage is where equipment that is powered by an Engine, either directly or indirectly, is repaired.

A car port, or shed, is where they are parked when not in use. Whether it be enclosed, with doors, or just a roof.

A shop is where other types of work is done.

As far as me getting over it, I did, a long time ago. I just, normally, keep my mouth shut. I was in the mood to stir the soup this mornin.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
A carport is an unenclosed structure, a shed is where we keep the lawn mower and other garden tools, and store our **** for our house. My current shop was originally a blacksmith and farrier's shop ("smithy", where stuff was fixed and repaired. My grandfather worked in a shop and/or a garage, I've always worked in shop bays or service bays (or now - in my shop).

While a garage - in local colloquium - can be both a place where motor vehicles are repaired and/or where they are stored, it used to be the latter. To have your vehicle "garaged" meant to have it stored, not repaired. An establishment where repairs are made of a mechanical nature are generally referred to (out here) as "Shops" - Tire shops, Machine shops, Truck shops, Repair shops, etc.

As always, YMMV, etc. And maybe I should go back out to the Bay... before I'm all wet!
