Garbage disposal

I installed a new disposal over the weekend. Sink never had one but was wired for one. It is on with the dishwasher and oven breaker. When I turn on the breaker the disposal runs fine. When I shut it off the breaker trips. Any ideas on what to check. The breaker is a 20amp. Could I bump this up to a 30amp and be fine?

The 30 amp idea you added after the original post is definitely the WRONG idea.
Tell us how you wired it. Take a picture if you can.

Is the breaker possibly a Ground Fault or Arc Fault breaker ? GFI really should not be a problem, not sure about afi

If all of the wiring was already there and all you did was hook up the unit, something could possibly be wrong with the disposal ? Kind of strange that it runs fine but blows the breaker when you shut it off. I would disconnect the disposal and maybe hook up a lamp instead and see what happens. If the lamp turns on and off ok I would suspect the disposal. What brand and model number is it ?

Looks like it has a 1 year in home warranty. I would call them and have them come out and fix it Not much other info on their web site about wiring etc.

I would try hooking up something else to the line first just to make sure the problem isn't in the wiring or switch.

It shows wiring to Junction box then a single line to the switch, I can just run it to a switch with out the junction box correct?

I guess you could for testing but if there is already a box there you should use it. How about some pictures ? It is a pretty simple circuit. Don't be a bit surprised if you find out it is a defective unit. BTDT

The switch does not look like it is wired correctly. Only the black wires should be hooked to the switch and the two white wires should be hooked together. That is if the black coming into the box is "hot" and the white is neutral. I am surprised it runs at all like that ???????

Just hold off, there is another way call "power at light" which would put black and white at the switch.

It happens. I'm restoring a car. Put the new brakes on and took a picture. Looking at the picture later I realized I had the primary and secondary shoes on backward. Yesterday I pulled the drum and shoes on one side and reinstalled them switched. Stepped back and realized THAT was backward. Reversed them again and checked the other side. It was right. Went back and looked at the picture. I'd confused the right picture with the left wheel! Dufus?

That should be a dead short when switch is turned on.

Haha! well now that you know how to wire the switch, a couple things- have a look for a single pole momentary switch ( pass and seymour or legrand make them ... google it ) it looks like a regular switch but only works while you hold it on, and opens the circuit when you let go. not code but a great idea for disposal units.
I hope I am wrong, but that BX cable looks like it is not properly attached? if all you did was pull the conductors through the hole on the bottom of the disposal you are looking for an education in 120V stimulation, or giving your insurance agent a reason to deny a fire claim. you want one of these if that is the case :

With the switch off, turning the breaker on would run the disposal. Turning the switch on shorted it and tripped the breaker.

Clear to see that a bigger breaker was not a good solution..

And it's hard to tell but I can't see a fitting for the AC cable at the switch.

I did the exact same thing about 20 years ago. My girlfriend wanted a disposal. We were renting a house, got permission from the property management place and I went to town. Could not figure it out.
Talked to my Dad on the phone, described what I did. He couldn't figure it out. He called a couple days later and told me to change the switch wiring.

now that you solved that dilemma, did you remember to knock out the plug for the dishwasher drain? if not, you'll have a mess when you run the dishwasher and be on here asking why the plumbing is clogged, LOL (BTDT)...

OP, take a moment to clamp the MC to the box. Use plastic bushings as well. Can't tell by the picture if either one of those things are there.

That's not MC Cable......it's a piece of 1/2" flexible conduit slid over NM cable without the proper fittings.

Should not of had 2 wires under a screw like that at all. Single conductor only. You have the ground connected to the disposal, what do you have going on in the switch box? The 2 ground conductors should be tied together if they are not.

Was the disposal actually running in the off position and tripping the breaker when turned the switch on? Turning the switch on would be your dead short.

I think the NM is the original prewiring to the switch, and the AC (or whatever) is the new cord to the disposal.
