Anyone have opinions on gasket cutter kits? Are they all about the same? Is there one that’s head and shoulders above the rest? I’m tired of using an X-Acto knife to make them out.

Use a ballpein hammer instead, works way better, it's faster, and you don't need to trace anything out.

Cut to rough shape, locate a hole, tap gently with the ball, insert a stud & repeat on the other side to hold gasket. Gently tap around all edges & holes

I do have a general washer/gasket cutter for circles tho and it works really well especially for small washers etc. Mounts in a drill press and has two blades to cut ID & OD at same time

I've been using the Kastar/Lang #950 (with a Matco sticker on it) gasket hole punch set for a lot of years with no complaints. Paired with a leather small hole punch tool it made it insanely easy to copy small carburetor gaskets.

I use the Ball Pein Hammer method, it works very well.
I have never heard of that technique. Might have promise. I fear the thermostat housing itself might be warped given its age and the manufacturers overt lack of QC in that era lol.

I seriously doubt that the thermostat housing is warped. What is more likely is that the gasket was torn or damaged upon installation, or silicon was used and gave out. A motor hot enough to warp the thermostat housing would have far more problems.

All for the hammer method.
I usually add a steel ball slightly bigger than the round hole in the metal part. Place ball centered and whack it.
Perfect fit, no straws of gasket left.
