As a Miner, you need to get creative with your setup because you are doing something with computers that isn't main stream. This is why you can see my temporary rack above is literally just a wire shelf I hang the GPUs from because regular computer cases are not made to handle more than 3 graphic processors (my biggest rig has 7 gpus and there are guys running linux with 10+)
As a "professional" I'm wanting things to look a bit neater and more presentable - and using server racks is an environment in which I'm familiar and have been working for years... hence my desire to convert my miners into 4U cases.
But how to do it?
I found the most "open" case I could find, and then modded it
Here's how I spent my day...
Here is how the case I am using comes. Drive bays in the front and a row of fans (too weak) in the middle.
Ditch the fans for ultrakaze 130cfm fans
I then stripped the case down so it is completely empty and mounted roller rails for the rack
Looking at the pieces that are in the case, this removable part of the drive tray gave me an idea...
I measured it into 6 equally sized spaces and test drilled some holes with the nearest tap size I had to find something that came close to letting a motherboard standoff mount on the tray
Test fitting using an old dead riser as a template:
Mounting 6 good risers:
Test fitting the modified tray:
Mounting and wiring it up:
I then put some cards in and took the cross rail that I'd removed and slid everything around until it was in the best location. I drilled some mounting holes in the cross rail and drilled some holes in the sides of the case and mounted the cross rail (being careful to catch all metal shavings)
...at this time I only have the 4 cards for this particular case because I'm waiting on 2 cards that are on backorder (but of course they charged my credit card)
up and mining!
...and as an extra reward; while I was out there working The Mine spit out another $350 coin
