As a Miner, you need to get creative with your setup because you are doing something with computers that isn't main stream. This is why you can see my temporary rack above is literally just a wire shelf I hang the GPUs from because regular computer cases are not made to handle more than 3 graphic processors (my biggest rig has 7 gpus and there are guys running linux with 10+)

As a "professional" I'm wanting things to look a bit neater and more presentable - and using server racks is an environment in which I'm familiar and have been working for years... hence my desire to convert my miners into 4U cases.

But how to do it?

I found the most "open" case I could find, and then modded it :rocker:

Here's how I spent my day...

Here is how the case I am using comes. Drive bays in the front and a row of fans (too weak) in the middle.
IMG_5983-L.jpg

Ditch the fans for ultrakaze 130cfm fans
IMG_6013-L.jpg

IMG_6017-L.jpg

I then stripped the case down so it is completely empty and mounted roller rails for the rack
IMG_6015-L.jpg

Looking at the pieces that are in the case, this removable part of the drive tray gave me an idea...
IMG_6231-L.jpg

I measured it into 6 equally sized spaces and test drilled some holes with the nearest tap size I had to find something that came close to letting a motherboard standoff mount on the tray

IMG_6228-L.jpg

Test fitting using an old dead riser as a template:
IMG_6230-L.jpg

Mounting 6 good risers:
IMG_6237-L.jpg

Test fitting the modified tray:
IMG_6233-L.jpg

Mounting and wiring it up:
IMG_6238-L.jpg

I then put some cards in and took the cross rail that I'd removed and slid everything around until it was in the best location. I drilled some mounting holes in the cross rail and drilled some holes in the sides of the case and mounted the cross rail (being careful to catch all metal shavings)
IMG_6243-XL.jpg

...at this time I only have the 4 cards for this particular case because I'm waiting on 2 cards that are on backorder (but of course they charged my credit card)

up and mining!
IMG_6245-L.jpg

...and as an extra reward; while I was out there working The Mine spit out another $350 coin :willy_nil

Norco case? I have a Norco something 470 think it is. Nice case! Nice you got the 120mm fan bracket....mine came with a bracket for 5 90mm fans. Quickly changed that out!

I looked into mining a bit today...definitely need more time but sounds interesting and not that complicated really

Do your homework.

Ethereum is supposed to start testing POS as early as September. When they do.. mining is going to be a blood bath as 2 million GPUs suddenly need something else to do. With difficulty going through the roof (it went from 350 to 800 in the last 40 days) ROI is potentially iffy starting this late.

YMMV

I turn off the illuminators in the cameras because they attract bugs and I waste far too much time cleaning webs from in front of the cameras :)

I then use this illuminator which turns night into day - amazon link: https://bit.ly/2q7BG3m

Thanks, I knew not to use the built-in illumination because of spiders and I had read about the stand alone illuminators so I was curious which one you used.

That's pretty much where I end up deciding against it every time lol. Seems like every couple months I go through a "look into it" phase then decide against it. Plus wanting ot start with only 1 card helps in the choice not to get into it.

But we will see maybe one of these rainy days Ill start a bit of testing on it just for fun

Would you happen to have a link to a build thread for your sprinter van and maybe some more inspiration for the 80/20 modular build out?

Things are slowly coming together...

19b3571642874dc5a375c8b467c2cfd5.jpg

I am taking my time and "doing things right".
For example: little things like making sure the fins in the cpu cooler are facing the right way for the rack's front-to-back air flow (they were 90 degrees out of phase in the old case). This rotation lowered the overall case temperature by 4 degrees Celsius.

The pups are enjoying all the shop time. Lots of stuff for them to get into out there :)

As much as I'd love to build a mining rig, I just don't see it lasting long enough to be as successful at is as you are. It looks like a ton of fun and pretty financially rewarding as well.

Every shop needs some proper K9 supervision! And thanks for the link to your van build I'm already up around page 150 or so!!! Keep the updates coming

If I was entering at this point I would not mine. I'd go to an exchange and spend some money and buy various coins I believed it and sit on them for 5 years.

The return will be far greater (especially with the Ethereum "ice-age" inbound which is going to nuke all the other coins when everyone moves their miners).

That said... I have the world's fanciest shop heater :lol_hitti

Have been busy enjoying summer so I've not done much to the shop.

I did host a poker game in it last weekend for some buddies. Had a great time :)

e3f26b78f4f08ed854952fcf826ff547.jpg

That and some bike maintenance. Have been trying to get a lot of riding in as I am heading to Crested Butte in August for some epic riding.

Photo from yesterday:

The mine is chugging away making money. I have everything running nice and stable so it has required little baby sitting lately which is nice :)

I'm looking forward to the BTC BCC split occurring Monday/Tuesday. Should make for interesting times :D

Cheers!

The mine is doing well!

Have been pretty busy working on the Sprinter in the shop the past few weeks - changing the interior up:

So that we could spend the holidays in Sedona Az which is where we are now. Sub-freezing at home... was 65 degrees here mountain biking today [emoji3]

I wonder how the OP is doing now that BC has hit $59K. The early adopters were definitely the winners. These days, my approach to crypto is to run the other direction. :) Maybe someday I'll educate myself enough to understand it to some degree of comfort.

I've had this thread bookmarked forever and I wish the OP well wherever he is. Likely a villa in Aruba or the South of France. Take care and be well. :)
