Generic name for optically clear plastic film?

Does anyone know the generic name for the optically clear self adhesive film that is used to make screen protectors etc?

I bought a hood for use inside my welding helmet that connects to my supplied air respirator. The hood is fabric and has a clear plastic visor sewn to the fabric. The visor came with blue protective film on each side which was to be removed before first use but if the clear visor becomes badly scratched, the only option is to replace the whole hood.

I always find welding crud gets up inside my welding helmet over time so I'm trying to find some of the clear adhesive protection sheets that I could fix onto the outside of the clear visor. I'm less worried about the inside as there is a gusset that goes around your neck which should keep crud out.

I was hoping I could find something that was 8" tall and say 36" long but I'm not sure what the generic name of the stuff is.

I'd like something that has reasonable optics so as to not reduce welding puddle clarity, to that end I was hoping to find the stuff that is used for screen protectors (application bubble nighmare and all that) rather than just a loose sheet of plastic that's secured with double sided tape.

But open to any ideas. Cheap ones even better ;-)

You can buy rolls of that film by 3M in different thicknesses, etc...

I'm familiar with this. I've applied it to motorcycle bodywork (3m brand) but it's not the same stuff as is used on screen protectors. It's not the same clarity. It's my backup option.

The clearest stuff I work with is called acetate. But its flammable as are all plastics, you sure you want to do this?

I was trying to point out that the peel and stick plastic is very flammable.
But yes, to answer your question, I sincerely think you should sell your helmet and weld without one.

It is the clearest, I think that’s right. We used to get great stacks of it for overhead projectors.

I tried to be clear in first post that I wasn't looking for tear offs that adhere using self adhesive tape.

It is the clearest, I think that’s right. We used to get great stacks of it for overhead projectors.

It may be more fire resistant then say, a water bottle, but as far as I know all plastic is oil based and therefore flammable

I have a welding helmet too. Welding helmets are flammable. Why do you think you occasionally have to replace the lenses? What could all the black specks be? Take a chill pill numbnuts.

Looks to me to be a pretty light colored lens if it was designed for welding, I'd think its more like for painting.
A fan positioned near you and a good quality welding helmet that flares out at the bottom and fits against your chest is my suggestion, it works for me.
Are you welding all day on a job? If so I'd think your employer would/could assist.

Huh? The hood fits inside of an existing welding helmet and connects to supplied air.
