I was going to buy a couple more 8500/8900 openers, but the prices have gone wild. I see Genie has a 6070 unit that is more reasonably priced. Has anyone got any input on these? I search brought up nothing.

Thanks

You need to compare feature for feature. The LM8500 is the Elite series now. Look at Chamberlain RJO20.

I need an opener that will open and close the door and connect via the jackshaft. If they'll do that reliably, what more could I use? I have a MyQ hub that will allow them to open and close with the MyQ app using the LM wall controllers.

Am I missing something?

I have the 6070 openers but have had for a few months. I can't really give an honest opinion on them yet. No problems but they open/ close slowly.

I did read where people mentioned they were slower than average. I watched a video and it took 15 seconds + to open.

Thanks for the reply.

We used to have the "problematic" W-D I-Drive openers. They worked great when they worked and man they were fast. You hit the wall button and couldn't make it out without ducking under the door.

There is a setting for the 6070 openers. It has to do with drum size. I thought about trying to change it and see if it would run faster. However to do it, I think I have to go back through and readjust all the other parameters for the door.

The Genie operner are fairly new, I believe it was just released earlier this year so there's not a lot out there yet.

Yep. Hopefully, they just copied what others have been doing and priced them a bit lower. These things aren't complicated so I'd hope they'll be fine. But, ya never know...

Just installed a Genie 6170 last weekend on. So far so good.

Initial impressions:
- It does seem a bit slower than the 8500 in my old garage but it doesn't seem unreasonably slow.
- More compact than the 8500.
- The wireless wall controller is nice so I didn't have to run new low voltage to the opener.
- I like the lift cable spring tensioners instead of the electronic switch on the 8500, seems like a simpler solution but we'll see how they hold up.
- I like that it does not need a repeater for older homelink vehicles, although I have not actually gone through the programming process on any vehicles yet.

The only issue I ran into is the space needed (between the track and the door) for the lift cable spring tensioner was a bit tight on one side, it took a bit of adjusting but seems to be working fine.

LiftMaster and the Genie appear to be the same from the outside view of them. At this time I assume they are built on the same factory line, they might have different parts, or made in different countries I have no idea.

I do know my liftmaster worked great for the 2 years I owned it

They aren't the same. As stated above the Genie is smaller. While they both use a similar gear reduction type motor the internal layout and components are not alike.

That being said, I joined up bc like the OP, I'm looking for a simple jackshaft opener. Apps & wizbang wifi features don't tickle my fancy bc they often cause more trouble than they're worth. It also wouldn't work for me bc I live beyond the reaches of broadband internet.

My desires:
Fits in a tight space (8500W & 6070 both fit)
Works with home link w/o repeaters etc (6070 does)
Has rolling codes (the affordable commercial openers don't)
Door lock
Std safety features (I have kids)
Affordable (the 8500W is spendy)

I'm heavily leaning towards the 6070 but I'm a bit leary. Genie's own website has zero info on the 6070 & 6170 in support. That's something I would expect them to at least populate a little bit if they had full intention to stay in the jackshaft opener market for the long-run.

Genie isn't stupid. They're marketing this to those of us who really want another LM8500, but aren't willing to pay the huge increase LM has leveled on these over the last 2 years. I managed to buy a NIB 2017 LM8500 for $175 recently, but I still need 2 more jackshaft openers for new commercial doors I have on order. I'll probably order 2 Genies and use the LM controllers so I can use them with the MyQ app for control.

I think you're confusing Genie & Chamberlain.

I installed a 6070 on my insulated 10 x 10 pole barn door about 3 months ago. easy install and working fine so far
with no complaints. I added an external keypad with no issues. thinking of adding one for my other 8 x 10 door. I like the wireless key pad and overhead light. I would say a good unit based on my limited time with it.

In the market for two wall mount garage door openers.
I don't need a battery back up or cell phone access capabilities.
The Genie 6070 has sparked my interest.
It's been a couple of months since the last comments on this thread, and I was wondering if there were any updates
or comments someone might wish to share on the Genie 6070 ?

thank you

Any updates? In the market for one currently.
I know I'm probably too late but I do have an update.

I went with Genie 6070H and 6170H-B (just for the battery feature on my wife's door, I have no use for the wifi). Installation wasn't bad. I did it as a high-lift retrofit so it took a couple days but there was other work too.

I have had a few problems with them. On the 6170H-B (wifi) I occasionally find the door randomly left open. I do have kids so I can't say definitively that it wasn't kids but there is at least 1 time I'm 99.9% certain it wasn't. We had gone on vacation, it snowed while we were gone. Came home to find the one wifi door open, but no snow in the garage (indicating the door opened itself after the snowstorm had passed). We live 1/2 mile off the road, almost a mile from the nearest house and we don't have internet. I can't see how anything could have opened it, no chance of a hacker through wifi, very little chance of interference. It hasn't happened in a while though. The other opener randomly stopped working 1 time, no idea why. The trouble code/guide indicated the opener needed to be replaced. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, reprogrammed it, and it has been fine since then.

I will also say Genie has lost their mind on price, these are now more expensive than LM 8500 openers. They have 6072 & 6172 openers that are much more affordable but I haven't looked into those yet.

My house was recently zapped by lightning and it smoked both openers. I'm trying to decide what I want to do. I think I will order a single replacement opener and pull the board and swap into a smoked opener to see if that fixes it. If so, I'll just get 2 replacement boards then have a spare opener. Outside of that, I don't think I would buy Genie again. At the attractive price point of 2020, yes. At today's price, no!

Has anyone out there connected a Genie 6070 to a roll up door? It’s not a jack shaft, but I am curious if you can connect directly to the center shaft in the middle of the roll or if it needs gear reduction? My door is a trac-rite 944 ( doors they install in the fabricated metal buildings. It is also 10x10 roll up door.

Looking for advice before diving in head first.

Was your door a roll up door? Did you have put gears to it or straight to the roll shaft? I am looking at the exact same thing…

I have a 6172 that I installed almost a year ago. It's exactly like the Liftmaster to install. I like that it has the wifi built in. I can open the door from anywhere if needed. It doesn't seem any slower than the Liftmaster.
