Getting a quote for insulation

Getting a quote today for bat insulation, vapor barrier, and then plywood walls instead of sheet rock .

the garage is attached, 20X27, one wall is finished ( house side) one wall is the garage door...

So basically two walls need insulation and plywood walls put up.


What is a fair price to pay ?

I have read on here a good company can do it for the same price as me just buying materials ? is that true ?

a local company is coming over tonight after work, so if the price is fair, I would prefer just go ahead and get this started ..

Vapour barrier is $30 for a roll
plywood is regional. $30/sheet around here.

Time to do it with a buddy, maybe 3 hours if you're slow.

my experience is, having blown in attic insulation done , is the same cost as just buying batts . win
buying batt insulation from the insulation guy is cheaper than retail store - win

$800 for plywood walls, that sounds fine.

What if I do decide to the ceiling, in plywood, with bat, or blow in, how much should I expect to pay for that ?

I live near you in central Iowa.

I paid a local company $1574 to install R-49 cellulose in my 2016 sq ft building, or about $.78 / sq ft.

I had estimated that I could buy the insulation on sale at Menards and rent a blower for about $1100. Menards rents the best blowers of any box store around here, Krendl 425's with a 14 amp blower. Using Krendl's numbers, that meant 8 hours of blowing with one person feeding and one person blowing up top. By contrast, the insulation contractor had a box truck blower and blew 100 bags in about 1 hour.

I'd just do it yourself. I had a few quotes for blown in insulation in my attic in the metro area, ended up being about 60% cheaper to do it myself. I just ended up with batts anyhow for the time being.

Please for the love of your back, put attic chutes in before closing up the ceiling even if you don't plan on insulating the ceiling. Pain in the *** to do those after the fact.

Based on the numbers I put, figure out your area/ square footage and costs and wait for the contractor's bid.

The you decide. If they are within say 2-300, have them do it. Anything much more than that and I would be doing it myself if I were you.

Personally, I'm a GC so I would do it on my own anyways. But that's just me!

What about the ceiling or under roof deck? Heat goes up.

Technically, "heat" radiates equally in all directions. However, "hot air" does rise.
Depending on your heating system, this makes a very big difference.

All I have is seat of the pants. First garage I did was walls before ceiling (with ridge venting). That was dumb.

You don't have to tape and mud. It will look better if you did. What about seams between the plywood?

If it’s s Shop then plywood would be my choice, if it’s a Garage then taped, muddled and painted drywall.

I was thinking of using wood colored caulk ? what do people who use plywood in shops do ?

I am in the same situation . I am doing my roxul right now by myself. On the walls sheetrock will cost me $5000 in paying someone to install and mud. If I do 1/2" plywood myself it would cost me $1000 in material

If you can hang plywood, you can hang sheet rock, plus sheet rock is cheaper.

Basic single layer taping is easy, and isn't required.

I can hang no problem. Tried mudding once and it was a disaster. That's the issue

I didn’t have to drive an hour to menards load the trailer blow for 2 days because the rental machine ***** and then drive back to return the extra and machine.

IMO plywood sheets nailed to the walls look as bad as sheetrock sheets nailed to the wall.

Yet people feel sheetrock MUST be taped.

I did a shop where I sheetrocked the whole room, then did 3/4" tongue and groove shiplap up to 42 inches. Looked nice and clean.

Menards machine, at least here is pretty good. It is a Krendl machine as stated earlier, two 115V inputs (hook to different circuits). If you have a good helper and the aperture (not sure what to call the opening of the chute) set correctly, you can blow about 20 bags per hour pretty easily
