Got my building permit this morning , now I can start on my garage. Going to be 26ft deep and 30ft wide with 2 9ft x 7ft roll up doors and 1 walk in door on the side. It will be all block with 10ft ceiling height. Going to put it to the right of the carports.

You never know what to expect! Got my permit Friday, guy shows up this morning to dig and pour the footing. WOW ground is so bad. Has to dig down 6ft to get to solid earth. Got it poured. What a pile of dirt I now have to move. But what a footing.

Until he mentioned guard dog I thought that was a horse! Don't skimp on the pictures, I haven't seen any block builds here.

I will post some photos as I progress, today was a surprise to say the least. Lets see 26 x 30 footing will be 8in x 16in. about 6yds. of concrete. Small amount of dirt to spread around inside the building. Not today 21-22 yds of concrete, footing is 5 ft thick, huge mound of dirt to move. But it is done.

Picked up a couple deals for my LOW BUDGET build over the last few days. Found a ad on CL for some Dura wire for the walls (it goes in every 2 rows by code ) Bought 1600 ft of 8in and 1000 ft of 12in. (which I do not need ) for $95.00. The 8in is 35 cents a foot. Went to a auction Saturday and a guy bought a 14ft by 50ft storage building in really good shape for $50.00. That included everything in it. There was a new DITTCO fire door and the steel frame , he sold me that for $50.00. So this makes me feel a little better after my footing cost 3 times mor than I had planned on. Plan on moving the dirt Saturday and set some block on Monday.

Had 350 block delivered this morning , along with 12 bags of mortar. Used my trusty steed to pick up 2 yards of sand. I will have the block laid up to floor level and have to take a break and catch up from the overrun on my footing.

No sand , just unstable soil. This area was heavily wooded up until about 8 yrs ago. We cleared it off and pushed all the stumps up and I thought the ground was better than it turned out to be. But I feel good with the footing as thick as it is . There will be about 3 courses of block below grade and it should be good to go. We did not get any work done today due to Bobcat problems so I will just have to adjust. I like my old truck to I have a little to much weight on it right now. But I have over loaded my trucks all my life.

Nice 60 degree day here in NC today. It has taken me a little time but the inside is backfilled (close enough for now ) My floor drain is in ( just putting one in one bay ) And just waiting on a few life issues to get taken care of so I can get the masons back and get the walls up.

It felt good to get back to work on my building today, after some delay over the winter due to life's events my plans are to get going again. I had a pile of sand and a pile of sandrock left from back filling and with the help of my Wife we shoveled it out and I have a little drag I pull behind my mower and smoothed it over, it turned out pretty good. Now I can get the rest of my block ordered and get the mason back. My progress is a little slow as I am acting as my GC and doing what I can myself and paying as I go. The end result will be the same though.

The day is off to a good start, I just received the rest of my block , mortar and lintels. So hopefully within the next couple weeks the walls will be up.

I will have to get some photos of my poor old abused truck. I am getting ready to go get about 2 ton of rock dumped on it here in a few minutes.

Curious why you went with block and footing rather than wood and floating slab.

Here is a photo of my shop I spent the last 20 yrs in. I have moved on and rented that to some young guys and I just need a place to put my tools. So to answer your question , I like block. It is done inside and out, it's fireproof. it's quiet, it's waterproof for washing cars or the walls or whatever. Pretty much air tight. Cost is a little more up front , but not really when you factor in upkeep. I have been paying as I go and I am the GC so I work on it has I have time and funds. Otherwise you are writing a check every time a guy gets out of his truck and that adds up quick. When we get it under roof I will go back and finish the grade and pour the floor and be good to go.

Finally,
Things have not worked out with the mason I used on the footing so I had to find another and they are coming in the morning. I am a patient man but I was beginning to get a little restless. Hopefully tomorrow at this time there will be some block laid.

Re: Getting started - roof is going on !

August will be a year since I got my permit, but life has lots of ups and downs and you have to roll with it. My build has been somewhat in stages but right now we are going forward at a good pace. I had 3 of the best carpenters you will find set my trusses today. They started work at 8 am and at 10:30 all the trusses were set and by 3 one side was sheated. My son and myself done the ground work so they never came down while setting the trusses and it is just a pleasure to work with people who take pride in what they do.

We finished sheeting the roof today, they got the T1-11 on the gables. I am going to cover the groves with batten strips. The metal for the roof is supposed to be here Wednesday, so things are looking good. My son , my wife and myself have been doing some hand digging around some lines to get out from the house so we can get a trencher to finish up the ditch for the power line.

We have got a lot done this week, all the roof is on except some rake trim and that should be done tomorrow. I have a little caulking and painting to do on the gables and move on to the floor and the wiring and I guess a water line while we are at it. And I have to find some overhead doors. This is to much work !

Thanks, I will take a close up this weekend. I am happy with how the gables look. We used a 1 x 6 Cedar rough on 3 sides and ripped them in half and put the smooth side down.

Re: Getting started - Low budget grading equipment

We are getting the floor ready for concrete so I thought I would post our low budget grading equipment we have used, One half was about 5 inches high so we broke it up with a mattic and used our drag and shoveled up the extra. We have the floor looking good. Next will be adding 4 inches of stone.

Re: Getting started - my poor ole truck

Today we started out with a well prepped dirt floor and after 5 trips to the rock quarry in my trusty steed and unloading 7 and a half tons of stone we almost have it covered. Out with the dirt and in with the stone ! 2 more trips and we should be good. I will get the slope and height where I want it and then get my concrete guy to pour and finish it.

One more photo, we have a slight slope going to the drain from all directions. I have the blocks screwed to the base of the wall and we can pull a string or use a straight edge to the top of the drain to get our measurement for stone and 4 inches of concrete. Finished floor grade is the top of the 2 by 4

Your build is progressing nicely.

Thanks 1/2 Cup.
Sometimes I wonder why I took this on. Trying to keep the cost down and do as much as I can is tough. But so far so good. I hope to have the floor down before the end of August.
