Hello just had new pole barn built with concrete do i need gfci outlet? Will i be fine without it? Or am i risking getting shocked?
Your buildings I'm sure are quite safe. It wouldn't be the worry that you installed all the electrical because you're a pro. But I had this old metal drill motor that I used many times to mix drywall mud. Sometimes grout, concrete and plaster. It wasn't until I was out on the wet lawn that the thing bit me. Not a big hit, just enough to remind me that old non double insulated tools can malfunction and be dangerous. I don't remember if the 3 prong plug was all correct. Generally I'm careful about that. Haven't really used that old thing after getting a shoulder replacement.Every receptacle in there is supposed to be GFCI protected, even on the ceiling. You can do it with breakers, or one receptacle per circuit, or you can install a GFCI receptacle at every single opening. Doesn't matter. I don't have any in mine and I'm not concerned about getting electrocuted, or even a little shock.
The main reason I don't have any in the shop is because I'm cheap. And too lazy to do anything about it. But old **** like that is out there and sometimes will do a job. Best to have the GFCI.
I certainly think that receps over 8' are not that important. I can understand bypassing the fridge/freezer. But everyone ought to do the GFCI thing in the garage if only those receps that are close to the door and used for extension cords. That's The National Electric Code so it's everywhere unless it's been changed as a local amendment. 240 volt receptacles are included nationally, but have been excluded by the State of Iowa. Also, some "inspectors" don't know that ceiling receptacles are included and some still think that the installation of a single receptacle is a work around to avoid a GFCI.That is the code where I live - all 15 and 20 amp circuits in a garage.

As far as lighting, I would have told him to either show me the written amendment stating hard wired garage lighting had to be GFCI protected or pound sand.My inspector said lighting also, regardless of plug in.
