Quick back story:

In 2009 I was laid off, not a surprise I knew it was coming 3 months in advance, the company I was working for lost the contract in my area and I refuse to work for the company that got it. (That's a whole nother story)

Knowing that I was going to be out of work we decided that it was a great time to sell our home and try an expirement, move to our lake place, where my shop is. So we sell our home with a closing 2 weeks after my last day of work, and because this was just an trial we moved all our excess "stuff" into my shop. We lived there for almost 2 years until we found a new home in the area where we wanted to live, all in all it was a good experience, Except that I had all this excess **** in my shop, and a lot of it is still there!!

Here are a few pics of what it looks like,









So please help me out and give me hell about how far gone I have let the shop get.
Maybe by posting these embaressing pics it will keep me motivated to get it cleaned up.

Oh knowing that I need more storage I found these at an auction on Sat morning, luckly they were one of the first items auctioned off I got them both for $15





Now I just need some wall space to hang them.

We were forced to move about 75% of our posessions out of the house and into my shop and enclosed trailer a few years back when we had a plumbing issue that infected much of the old house with black mold and we lost use of the basement..

I certainly feel your pain as I lived it and am still recovering...

Just keep chipping away at it...

Looks like a nice set up behind all that um ya know stuff , haha. My place is no different only Ive got it spread over the 3 car garage, dog coop/ shed and a back shed that I added a 16x16 shaddition on last year for even more cluttered storage.

Some shelving in the mazzanie area would help. Looks like any available flat spot is occupied so more shelving on all the walls would probably do good too.

I filled 3 40 gal bags of trash today, I'm finding the hard part is deciding what is sell, what is trash and what is keep.

My goal is to have it all cleaned up by the end of the week of July 4th (we will be there that whole week)

Right now I need to have the woodworking side of the shop cleaned up so I can build the cabinets for my sisters travel trailer remodel, there is nothing like spending 2 hours cleaning off the bench so I can make 1 cut with the radial arm saw.

On a side note what is the best way (cheapest) to get rid of old electronics it seems that there are 5 non working vcr's in there and 2 old scanners. Damn kids keep bringinng them home.

This is why I'm never going to auctions around here again. Those same boxes, in much worse shape, went for like $80 at the last auction I went to. Granted, they were full of misc. small parts and gaskets, but they were probably for old diesel trucks and/or forklifts. Dunno what the buyer would do with those (I would've chucked them and kept the cabinets). Too many unemployed and retired around here driving up the prices I guess.

It's usually the same around here too, To many guys buying them for their "show" garages.

I got lucky at this one, most auctions around here start at 10 am but this one started at 8am and there were only about 20 of us there. A friend of mine was there for the whole thing and it ended at 9pm.

I Love big estate auctions way out in the sticks!

I think a call to "hoarders buried alive" is in store. They'll come in and clean the mess up for you. Or better yet....just open your garage up to your fellow GJ members and let them come thru and pick it clean. Im sure you have some **** in there that someone wants. We'd have that place picked clean in a weekend.

I have a total of 23' of bench top work area. When I need to do something, I have to clean off a spot. In other words, I can't help ya.

If you truly want more manageable space, you need to sell/donate some stuff. I try to only have things on the floor like rolling cabinets or disassembled projects that are on rolling carts also.

1 - rent a roll off
1 - sweep for obvious throw-aways
2 - sweep for less obvious throw-aways
3 - Put all loose tools in 55 gallon drums (get how many you need)
4 - Put all power hand tools on tables
5 - Put all stationary tools on tables
5 - Put toolboxes on tables near rolling toolboxes
6 - Get all toolboxes in CLOSED position
8 - Stack all materials on tables
7 - Have one hell of a garage sale

Start eating the Elephant . . one bite at a time!! Your shop is just small elephant, so you can do it.

I'd start at the elevated storage area as you'll need that area to be organized to help you overall. Get some heavy duty racks that you can install up there and get use of height of building . . . thus line the back wall with racks that virtually go up to ceiling. Get more of those storage totes or some milk crates and go to town!!

Amazing how fast treasures become burdens isn't it. I have a 14' dump trailer with 3' sides. I have removed two trailers of stuff lately and it is 1/2 full right now with more to be put in. Being a pack-rat and being tidy is an oxymoron. Mine was in that shape for the last couple of years for some of the same reasons but it is getting better as the stuff is moved out to unencumber me. I almost feel that I am to the point of being able to start something new and fun.

With that ceiling height, I would be getting rid of those 12" deep shelves, and spend a few bucks on pallet racking, build it so the shelves are spaced to take large plastic bins. The 20 gallon ones they have at the home center. Make BIG easy to read labels. You can fit a TON of stuff in them. I have them marked with what project they are for. IE, spare tractor parts, Hot Rod parts, Datsun Z car parts, auto body supplies, plumbing fittings. You get the idea. Keith

No I was only out of work for a few weeks after the move. This is why you should never burn bridges, a old employer of mine heard that I was looking and he had a friend who needed a PLT license holder. I have been sub-contracting there for almost 3 years.

My garage was much much worse then yours. I just started getting rid of stuff. Haven't used this in 2 years trash, haven't used this for what I brought it home for trash. I have reclaimed a lot of my "convenient flat surfaces". What really helped me was organizing stuff, giving tools and what not homes. But most importantly was putting stuff back in its home when I finished using it and I still struggle with this.

Flat surfaces are the bane of my existence!!! I swear they are magnetic for ****. I try to toss all the boxes and bags BEFORE they get into the shop, yet I always seem to find a bunch of them in there, and coffee cups from people that drop by, (wife mainly) not to mention my mess. Best thing I ever had to keep the shop clean, was a nephew who needed work on his YJ, I would work, and he would run wrenches and clean up. I think I now know why my Dad had kids!!! Keith

Rent a dumpster or have one brought in and start sorting and tossing.

Get a few plastic barrels for the recycleables, no reason to pay to throw them away if somebody will pay you for them. If the VCRs don't work, cut the cord off and chuck them in the dumpster, save the cord for the copper pile. let the recycling and scrap pay for the dumpster (or part of it)

Get a box for all the aerosal cans, gather them up and sort them later.

The piano, move it, donate or CL it.

Just start making the push to clear it out. Whether you keep it, trash it, recycle or CL it, it's going to be work.

I have the exact same feeling here... The life expectancy of a flat surface with nothing on in my house is about 15 seconds....

Just dropped off 355 pounds of copper today mostly cat5 $1.35 a pound.

Talked to swmbo today, she knows that the shop is no longer long term storage and she is prepared to sell off or donate or something her stuff that is in there.

Got to keep the piano, have a plan for that.

Priced out shelving today, F that, that's why I have a welder! drawing up plans for shelving tonight so I can get a materials list for the steel yard.
Anyone have a recent price on 1 1/2 angle?

Wish I could get a dumpster but the delivery fee is out of the question.

It's really that warped, It was wet outdoor lumber yard when it was installed, it hasn't moved in 6 years but it warped bad as it dried. The plan is to replace it with a steel post.

I agree about the boxing, I either fix a box, even cardboard and write on the end. I am pretty well sorted but we had one item last week looked for a while for, got jambed on back of a shelf and my helper finally scored it. We knew we had it and couldnt figure out how it got separated from the rest of it.

I throw away a ton of cardboard also, it adds up fast.

That's a 69 intl scout lexan body with a full interior, I dug out the running gear minus motor and drive shafts as well.
what wil you give me for it?

I've stepped back a bit from the rc world, but have several still around, all with complete interiors. except my daughters 4 wheel drive pt crusier, haven't built her interior yet.

1/10 scale Give me a bit and I will dig out the 2 I have here at home and post a few pics.

I have way more fun building them from scratch everything but axels, transmissions and motors than I do driving them.

This one is my baby, built the first iteration in less than a week for a competition.

Wish I could be but my shop is a hour away <sigh>

On a good note I have a full wall shelving system all drawn up.

First shelf at 38 inches to have room under for jack stands and other heavy things that are used on the floor. From there 12" deep shelves 14" apart to allow easy access to commonly used things, most will be in cases or bins. At 80 inches the shelves convert to 32 inches deep for boxes and larger bins for less often used items.

That's 4 12 in deep shelves and 4 32 in deep shelves running 26 feet. There will be a few breaks in the lower shelving for things like parts washer, press.

I know a lot of you like closed shelving but personaly I can't stand it, open shelving with well labeled boxes and bins may get dusty, but I like being able to see what is there easily so I can direct the minions to the proper item quickly.

I don't have a big issue with dust in the shop anyway, between the dust collector on the wood working equipment and the air cleaner the air is mostly dust free.

We are. We're throwing them at Thumper, problem is there's too much **** in the way to hit him.

Mine wasn't nearly that bad but it bothered me. You couldn't walk through my garage without barely brushing against something that inevitably fell on the floor. Our area has toxic waste disposal areas for old paint, pestacides, motor oil etc. I took a ton of stuff that my house's previous owner had left. Initially I thought it was great that he left me all kinds of stuff that was potentially useful but three years later almost none of it had been used. It really felt great to commit to getting rid of stuff that still was useful but not to me. the place that takes the toxic waste sorts out the stuff that can still be used and you can go there and pick up those items for free so it's not necessarily being wasted.
Start with the obvious trash. once you get rolling and make progress you'll get encouraged to do more. It's a good feeling to get clutter out of your life.

That tiny little transfer case in that RC truck is so cute. That last picture amazes me with the details. The frame looks real with scuffed paint, brazed joints on the cage, surface rust or red oxide primer on the cage, heim joints etc. Pretty cool. To bad the motors don't look the part.
