Re: Give me hell!!

I dont live all that far away from you, and if you need someone to come with a truck and trailer for "donations" just let me know haha. I think you could have one hell of a garage sale after you determine what you can stand to part with.

Re: Give me hell!!

I've come to realize I personally do not have the skills to keep things organized. I have a bad habit I cannot shake -- I just set things down wherever I am. So, a nice neat ordered space pretty rapidly becomes chaos. Moreover, I just don't "see" the mess until it is overwhelming.

I've come to the conclusion I will never be able to keep things organized. Nevertheless, I really like it when they are.

Solution: Mrs. Jaguar Fan. She's great at keeping things organized. I sometimes bring her into my garage with me & we go at it for an hour or so. By that time, my blood pressure is too high to proceed & I call it a day. But it helps.

Does your swmbo or other family/close friend have those organizational skills? If so, ask them for help.

Re: Give me hell!!

Honestly why build shelving when you can pick up used pallet racking. Check out SJF they are west of the metro. It's all adjustable and already painted. Much better use of your time. If your going to be buying new steel tubing, new pallet racking is still going to be cheaper in the end. Look on craigslist, generally always some on there for sale.

Re: Give me hell!!

There is no way that any commercial shelving is less $$$ than building my own custom.

Even more so considering that I want 2 different depths, 12 inches lower and 30 inches above head height.

Per my design I will have less than $500 invested in 26 feet of shelving 14ft tall works out to 208 ft of shelving.

Not true Thumper. Purchased 40' of industrial shelving for under $100 down by Albertville last fall. Can't afford to build at that price.

My neighbor just did a garage overhaul, it was a mess as to be about useless. I might swing down and peak at it later but like a lot of guys had nice stuff just all in a pit. Cant find it or use it then its just scrap.

Re: Give me hell!!

Well Got back to it a bit this weekend, Friday night as soon as I got there I started by finishing up a few small projects, same for Saturday morning, figuring that if those small things were done then I could get them out of the shop and have some more space.

Here are some pics of the 69 scout back together and ready to be put up out of the way.

I had the parts for these lights laying around so I got them put together and hung replacing some of the florecents that had bad transformers.

Here are a few of the overall progress

It was such a nice weekend that I got a lot done on my sisters trailer remodel from a standard travel trailer to a 100% handi capped accessable home away from home.

The interior all framed and wired

A shot of the liquid rubber roof, this stuff is great even if its $$

The new inground holding tank, this will have a pump to transfer the contents to the septic tank.

55 gal plastic barrel with 14inch hole cut in the top, 15 inch wheel with the center removed, a in and out flanges installed.

Here it is in the ground, next weekend I will finish the plumbing and form it up for a concrete cap, I still need to pick up the diamond plate steel to make the cover.

This is identical to the one I use for the shop.

I vote garage sale/classifieds on here. You need to clear stuff out to make room for other stuff you actually want to use.

I have about 30 things in the sell pile as of right now.

My biggest issue so far is that the shop is 45 miles from a good hardware store so if I don't have a part or the parts to make a part handy I have to wait to finish a project.

This weekend the drain on the shop sink started leaking, I took it apart to find the issue and low and behold the rubber washer on the bottom of the strainer was shot.

A few minutes of digging in the spare plumbing boxes and I had a new washer, sink fixed.

Re: Give me hell!!

Is it my eyes or is that 6x6 post really that warped?:eyecrazy:

Called the steel supplier today the new post is $17 a foot, so about $250. I need to measure it this coming weekend just to make sure I get a post long enough.

The plan is to do it just like the old post but in 5 inch 1/4 wall square tube.

The old post has a 1/2 inch pin in the bottom that fits into a hole in the floor (to keep it from being kicked out if it gets bumped) and at the top it's a standard jack post plate and screw. Do any of you see an issue with this set up?

Re: Give me hell!!

I filled 3 40 gal bags of trash today, I'm finding the hard part is deciding what is sell, what is trash and what is keep.

My goal is to have it all cleaned up by the end of the week of July 4th (we will be there that whole week)

Right now I need to have the woodworking side of the shop cleaned up so I can build the cabinets for my sisters travel trailer remodel, there is nothing like spending 2 hours cleaning off the bench so I can make 1 cut with the radial arm saw.

On a side note what is the best way (cheapest) to get rid of old electronics it seems that there are 5 non working vcr's in there and 2 old scanners. Damn kids keep bringinng them home.

One thing that might help is to establish rules. If it's value is less than $X and it won't be needed in 6 months, trash it. If it's Value is between $X and $Y and it won't be used in the next year, trash it (or sell it)....so on and so on. Write 'em down and post them in the shop for reference and stick to them.

I had a special rule for **** that was broken that I thought I might need one day...gone with no questions. I once put a busted microwave in the attic for god's sake...what was wrong with me?

]Flat surfaces are the bane of my existence!!! I swear they are magnetic for ****. [/B] I try to toss all the boxes and bags BEFORE they get into the shop, yet I always seem to find a bunch of them in there, and coffee cups from people that drop by, (wife mainly) not to mention my mess. Best thing I ever had to keep the shop clean, was a nephew who needed work on his YJ, I would work, and he would run wrenches and clean up. I think I now know why my Dad had kids!!! Keith

This right here^^^^

I have one long bench and a desk. But one also has to get in the habit of not laying something down until later, because 9 times out of 10 it will just lay there until it gets shoved out of the way for something else to lay. Changing habits is hard and it can be a little time consuming, but you have to FORCE yourself to put it away when you are done with it. If I am working on something and it's tools I have to put away, if it's late, I will take a shoe box and put all of the tools in that and set them on my roller. Then the first thing the next morning, I will wipe them all off and put them away before I do anything else.

For the OP.....the only advice I can give is PURGE some of that stuff. Then get some lumber and get some shelves built or cabinets with doors. If you wnt it cleaned by the 4th, you had best get it in gear as you only have two weeks to accomplish it.

Re: Give me hell!!

I live by this:

If I haven't seen it in over a year... it gets donated or tossed.
If I haven't used it in over 2 years... it gets stored, donated, or tossed. Stored only if there is a very high likelihood of using it in the next year.

I have moved every 4 years for school, training, and jobs, and I like to have clean well organized spaces... clutter and 'useless' things drive me crazy.

Pictures of newly finished garage (new construction) to come.

Re: Give me hell!!

Ok ya'll time to tear into me, I didn't get any cleaning done this weekend at all, in fact I made a little more mess.

I spent the entire weekend working on my sisters trailer.

On the inside I finished the wireing, added some insulation and finished up the blocking so I can install the paneling.

On the outside I worked my *** off, replaced the bad decking ( I hate to say it but my supply of 100 year old 2x14x24' douglas fir is showing signs of its age and I spent a lot of time searching for enough good pieces.)

Mixed and poured the concrete for the cap on the sewage transfer tank.

Started the frame up of the new screen porch and built the access ramp, I am really likeing the new impact driver about 600 screws this weekend!

Another ataboy for taking care of family, Just chip away at the shop it will come around. I got my shelves from an office furniture rental place. they were from the census bureau after the census was done. medium duty not as heavy as warehouse shevling but heavy enough. That may be a good source to look to. You can see them in my thread. My problem is the shelves get covered up with parts from parted out cars I can use or sell someday and uses up space intended for project cars. Keep it up it will be clean before you know it.

That's my excuse and i'm sticking to it.

I used to get rid of excess almost as soon as it accumulated. I have discovered that "keepitis" is not a bad word. What we do on our rental property garages (tenants always use garages as dumping grounds in our experience, is to move EVERYTHING into the driveway. You will have no choice but to deal with it all at once. Friends and family help always makes it easier.

Well family has to come first, the weather has been good so time had to be spent working on the trailer.

I'm going to be there July 2nd till the 7th so I should be able to attack the shop and get a lot done! Besides getting the trailer done will get quite a bit of stuff out of the shop.

well my dreams of having the shop all cleaned up by today went out the window, I ended up working Monday and Tuesday and didn't get to the lake until 3 am on Wednesday which of course ment that most of Wednesday was shot all to hell as well. I spent what time I had on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday working on my sisters trailer, on a good note that project is almost done.

So I finally got to work on the shop on Saturday the first project was to clean up the area around the post that needed replacement. Once that was done and I could get some good measurements I fabbed up the new post, For those of you that care the post is 5 inch square with 1/4 inch walls, the top and bottom plates are 3/8 inch. The top plate has a 1 1/16 inch hole for a jack post screw and the bottom plate has a 3/4 inch pin the sits in a hole in the floor to keep it from kicking out.

The next step was paint, I decided on a quick rattle can job, wiped it down with acetone and then hit it with 2 coats of primer then 2 coats of high heat satin black (left over from rebuilding a smoker last year).

While I was waiting for the paint to dry I started on a copy of Jack Olsen's 2 faced clock.

Once the clock brackets were painted it was time for break.

4.5 lbs small mouth bass

1 lb crappie

This morning while waiting for my minions to show up to help set the post I drilled and tapped the holes to mount the clock, and the clamps that hold the conduit to the post.

Here is the post in place.

Once it was up I started on reattaching everything

I painted the elec red so its easier to see.

When I went to put the grinder back in place I noticed that the pedestal was in rough shape so I decided to pull it apart and clean it up, well as usual that led to finding a few issues, the biggest being that the cast mounting plate was cracked and about to break, so not only did I have to clean up the pedestal but had to make a new mounting plate as well, glad that I bought more 3/8ths than I needed.

Took the wire cup brush to the ped and then hit it with 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of john deere green that I had in the paint cupboard.

Here is the machine that this base is from
HB RCouse
Since I had it apart I pulled the eye shields off and took the glass out to clean it up and while it was apart I painted the light cover and the shields.

well that's where I ended for the week not as much as I wanted but a good start and having the new post in takes a load off my mind.

Oh I also picked up all the steel for the shelving when I was picking up the post.

I actually got a few things done over the weekend.

The first thing was getting the grinder back on the freshened up ped.

Once that was done I fired up the band saw and with the help of the 22 yo boy we got all the angle for the shelves cut and drilled.

While the boy was finishing up the cuts I made a quick jig out of a few scraps to drill the angle (sorry no pics) I took a 2x4 and attached a 1x4 to the side in a "L" shape, then I drilled a hole and inserted a 5/16th bolt with a nut set below the level of the wood so only the end stood proud, I clamped it to the drill press table with the stud 24 inches from the center of the drill bit. Then I measured over 6 inches and marked the jig for the first hole, once that hole was drilled I dropped it over the stud and drilled the 2nd hole and then repeat. Quick way to drill multipul holes at a fixed distance.

Once I had the main parts drilled I reset the jig to drill the holes in the shelf supports.

Once all the drilling was done I set up a 14 foot table and using wood and screws I made a jig to hold all the parts in place while I tacked everything together. only took 30 minutes or so to get all 7 shelf supports tacked up.

Next weekend I will finish weld them and start building the shelves themselves.

I've found that the fastest way to get rid of stuff is to make runs to the dump with a flatbed trailer. :) bam problem solved. If its stuff that isn't ready for the dump yet, there are plenty of people out there less fortunate than you that would maybe love to finally own a VCR.

Okay that last part is maybe bullcrap. Seriously though, donate the stuff you don't need but don't want to dump to your favorite local charity.

I've been keeping my garage clean and clutter free by following one simple rule, ok maybe more than one:)

Garage Rule #1:
If I haven't needed it in one entire year, that **** hits the trash heap.

Followed closely by

Garage Rule#2:
Remember that becoming the star in a new episode of 'Hoarders' really isn't that far off if you are a garage dweller like most here.

Closing with

Garage Rule #3:
It's a shop. Not a storage unit. The more you treat it like a storage unit, the more it becomes one.

Oh and clean that damn garage!! I would possibly do horrible things to acquire that much space!!! Quit wasting it!! There's some hell for you.

Well Finally made some great progress this weekend.

First up the boy and I got all the pieces for the shelving finished up and got right to welding, as usual we ran into a glitch, ran out of wire so Friday night was shot, a few quick calls on Sat morning produced a new 33 lb spool of .035 and a 4 pak of tips.

We went at it hard and in a few hours we had a pile of welded and painted shelving supports.

Once that was done we turned out attention to the shelves. We fired up the table saw and ripped the OSB to size, then cut down some 1x6's to 1.5 inches.

A few minuets of set up and we ran the strips through the router table making a rabit for the shelf edge.

We then used liquid nails and 1 1/4 inch staples to apply the edging to the shelves.

This morning we got at it right away, clearing out the first section of wall.

Then we lagged the shelf supports to the wall studs, The top hole was through drilled and a 3/8ths inch carriage bolt was installed through the wall for extra strength.

With the first 3 supports up we started on the shelving, If you notice that the shelves don't reach the 3rd support this is by design, When the next set of shelves are installed there will be a board glued and screwed to support the end of the first shelf and then continue down the wall.

Just a little more storage I came up with, I removed a exterior phone and weather proof box last week and thought It would be a great place to store stuff that I use out side the shop quite often. A quick clean and paint job then mounted it to the wall.
