Gladiator RTA Caster Question

Hi All,

I'm finally going to make my garage a priority this Summer and acquired 3 Gladiator Ready-to-Assemble Large Gearboxes. They're fine for my planned uses, but it looks like they aren't on casters. The ones made for these cabinets looks to run about $50 per kit and there's a lot of complaining about the bolt lengths being too short. Given the price (for three), and the fact I really want durability, is there a way I can measure the mounting points and just buy a different (more durable?) set instead?

I'm even considering making a wooden frame for each, mounting that to the factory holes on the cabinet and then mounting different casters to the frame. Could even allow me to mount more casters that route for added stability(?).

TIA!

Depends. I just installed three of the Gladiator tall 66" cabinets and the casters are weird. Front casters lock but do not swivel. Rear casters swivel. And the front casters have a different bolt pattern that is not squared off--front holes are wider than rear holes. These are VERY large wheels and I am sure the extra engineering is there to prevent accidents.

The smaller cabinets pose less risk of falling over. So depending on the size of your cabinet, you probably are OK going with a no name, lower priced caster. Especially since you need 12 of them. Then you can buy your own bolts that fit.

As for the hole spacing, just use what is in the cabinet and drill additional holes if the spacing is not right. The steel is not that thick and drilling a few holes would be a lot easier than your proposed wooden interface.

Good luck with your cabinets. I love mine. Check out my thread in "Gallery".
