Good quality crimp pliers for electrical work

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for the best stuff I can buy for a reasonable price.

I've heard good things about Klein Tools and Channellock.

I bought the wire stripper katapult and a wire cutter, both from Klein Tools:

A couple of days ago, I got to know the Rennsteig tools, they are simply amazing and from what I heard, the ultimate tools to do a perfect harness job, Im right?

But they are a little bit expensive, so I'm wondering what brands should I look?

I need this types of dies to make crimps I need:

^^^^^ The only time you get a bad crimp with these is when YOU screw it up.

I don't use them daily but I've definitely done thousands of 10-22 crimps over 10 years with the one pair I own and I'm pretty sure they'll last me the rest of my useful life.

Dam those are nice but expensive. Most of the big ignition guys have them too such as MSD, Accell, Taylor, etc... Not sure what jaws you need but MSD tool is nice and had a bunch of different jaws for auto stuff. Irwin makes electrical stuff too you could try them. Klein is my go for electrical if they make it.

This is what I use. It is a great crimper. I used to use those flat style crimper/stripper/screw cutter ones and these Kleins just blow them out of the water.

Don't push that side cutter too far because the jaw will break and fly across the room. I use them for cutting zip ties but nothing heavy.

I like the Thomas and Betts tools and use this one for almost everything. The cutter on the TB is tough. It will do most common uninsulated terminals. Check out their Sta-Kon series for specialty stuff.

This is what I use. It's stamped Shattuck Industries and I got it from a Jensen Tools catalog back in the day when I was doing datacomm work. I think it's similar to the Ideal Crimpsmaster. Many different dies are available. The frame is about $50 and the dies are about $25/ea.

I use the same ratcheting crimper, nice thing is you can find dies for a lot of different applications. I have some for Weatherpack pins and Molex pins, saved me from having to buy their $$$$ crimpers.

Its worth having a good quality manual pair like the Klein posted earlier.

Compare the jaws of this T&B setup with the Klein.
The Klein has one U shaped crimp, and one oval. The oval is for insulated connectors. The U is NOT.
This T&B will mess up insulated connectors, but will work with smaller un-insulated crimps than the klein (if you need that).

I have both of the first 2 links. They are the same besides the handles. The journeyman handles are the most comfortable I have used besides snap On. I use the journeyman the most. I would buy them if I were you.

After deliberating for a while I went with the Ideal crimpers, like new on ebay for ~1/3 of retail. Very pleased with them. Have done a wiring harness for a boat and trailer with no issues as well as 2 other trailers. I have since picked up the T&B's at a garage sale as well as a pretty well used Klein. Ideals are by far my favorite. I've used the channellocks, and they do work fine, but the ideals are much nicer IMHO.

The ultimate is going to be a ratchet crimper, but those get pretty specific and pricey.

I like my Ideals that CWP1616L (taps playing) suggested in my thread on the Channellock crimpers. Remember that thread? Lots of members contributed to it. Close second place goes to the very high quality Klein and Thomas and Betts crimpers. I like the wide crimp dies on the Ideals.

I said above that I own many different brands. Last count I have 11 wire cutter/crimpers. Including the Thomas&betts, Snap On, Ideal, channellock. I still always reach for the Klein journeyman's. I use them daily many times a day. I have a set of the regular handle 1005 that's easily 13 years old. Still work great. The Snap On set has the most superior cutter.

I have to say for all around best buy considering price, availability and quality it would probably have to go to the Kleins. They can be found easily in stores and online with better prices than the Ideals, Snap On or T&B.

I do business with this guy, he's been a mechanic for 20+ years so he has a lot of hands on experience. He only sells tools he has used and tested himself and he has determined to be high quality. Some of them are cheaper off-brands, but I know he doesn't sell them if they're junk, so I'd feel comfortable to buy anything he's got.

Also, that Ebay hydraulic battery terminal crimper is supposed to work well. I haven't used it myself but I've read about it here and the reviews seemed to be overwhelmingly positive.

I've got the Astro and it seems pretty decent, though I don't use it much. The pliers style crimpers are fine for the majority of what I do and are faster for me. I really only bust out the Astro if I need to crimp a specialty connector. This is the first ratcheting set I've had, so I can't speak to the quality compared to other brands. I do like that the dies snap in without tools. Sorry I'm not more help, but I can tell you the Astro set is not junk.
