Any real, factual figures to back up on what looks to be a rather dubious claim? :dunno: Besides it's not just one central organization.

The local stores seem to have about a half dozen employees, on any given day. None of them look like CEOs.

HFH is a great organization as well, , but it's mission is totally unrelated to Goodwill's.
I got to work firsthand with a guy who went through their job placement program and ended up with our company. We had regular correspondence with Goodwill throughout the transition and this continued during employment. I was impressed with the services they provided and maintained locally.

Never understood the manufactured hate for them, but nothing is surprising now days.

Looks like their executives might make in the $700k range in a year, maybe some bonus.

In the world of Corporate CEO's, that seems slightly better than beer money.

Not my claim, but curious me hit google, and it offered up
Goodwill CEO Salary scandal as ny third choice. The AI answer may not be facts (but we aren’t asking it about old tools, so might be a chance of truth)

Again, Not Mine, not my opinion, just offering it for your perusal. But looks like it was localized on the salary question. My color highlights for the TL;DR crowd, the links at the bottom are not my highlights.

The Goodwill CEO salary scandal generally refers to the major 2016 investigation into Goodwill Omaha, where the CEO and executives received massive salaries and bonuses while the charity's core mission suffered. This incident sparked intense public scrutiny, as community members and donors expressed outrage over excessive non-profit compensation. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Details of the Goodwill Omaha Scandal

  • The Leadership Compensation: An investigation revealed that then-CEO Frank McGree received over $933,000 in total compensation in 2014, including a $519,000 lump-sum retirement payout, hefty performance bonuses, and country club perks. Additionally, 13 other executives were paid over $100,000 annually.
  • The Fallout: Following widespread outrage and major donors pulling their support, McGree resigned in late 2016.
  • The State Investigation: The Nebraska Attorney General launched a two-year investigation, culminating in a 2018 report and settlement. The probe found that the organization had "lost focus" on its true charitable mission. Goodwill Omaha was forced to completely overhaul its board, implement stricter management oversight, and severely limit executive bonuses. [3]
The Enduring Internet Myth vs. Reality
Much of the broader public outrage surrounding Goodwill CEO salaries is fueled by a viral internet myth.

  • The Myth: A widely circulated email claims a fictional CEO named "Mark Curran" owns Goodwill and pockets millions of dollars a year.
  • The Reality: Goodwill is not "owned" by anyone; it is a network of over 150 independent, regionally autonomous 501(c)(3) nonprofits, each governed by its own local, volunteer board of directors. Because compensation is set locally, the salaries for Goodwill executives vary depending on the revenue and operational size of the specific regional branch. [6, 8, 9]
To verify executive compensation at your local branch or to view official tax documents, use the ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer to search for specific IRS Form 990s. [10]

And on the % serving the community, Google AI say the sorta reverse of the statement that started this search

Goodwill operates as a network of 155 independent regional organizations rather than one central company, meaning there is no single national percentage. However, regionally, Goodwill reports that 87% to 90% of collective revenue from the sale of donated goods goes directly toward funding community-based programs. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

These funds are reinvested to provide vital, no-cost programs such as career training, job placement, resume building, and support services (like childcare and transportation) to individuals facing barriers to employment. [1, 4]
Because each regional Goodwill is independently operated, they manage their own financials and budgets. You can check the exact financial breakdown and percentage of revenue returned to the community by finding your local chapter on the Goodwill Location Finder. [6, 7]
Would you like help finding the specific financial reports or career services available at the Goodwill near you in Half Moon Bay?
