Me too! It seems like the parts should be available to do these yourself, but it's hard to navigate the industrial components without knowing what you're looking for. There are plenty of places that sell "industrial" lights to people that just want the look and don't realize that these should be about as cheap as they come.

The best I can come up with is looking to places that are truly offering them to people that, well, own a barn.

Another thing to look into is vapor tight fixtures. Lithonia, Thomas & Betts and Cooper seem to be the main manufacturers. Bent conduit for the gooseneck, or whatever you need. The trick is finding a reflector. Haven't cracked that one yet, although you could use a metal pan with a hole like Jack did.

Good luck!

Others please chime in.

If your handy bending conduit, you can bend your own "hoop". I have done this for several customers using rigid conduit, but it isn't worth the cost if you don't already have a bender and threader.

I don't know the number and the HD site is down for maintenance, but I was in there tonight and saw a "shop style" - black, with a shade like the fleet farm item - pendant light. $30. Add some pipe or some curvy conduit and you got it. Looked similar to the shades in your typical Outback.

I see the shields on eGay all the time. Most of the time they're affordable. Just punch in 'gas station.'

Keep in mind the ones you get at a store buy may not be rated for higher watt bulbs. I had to rebuild my two new ones so I could use 100 watt bulbs. No prob; get a new socket that's rated and put some 12 GA wire on it.

You any good at building stuff? Know anyone who is?

I was thinking of buying one of these, flipping it upside down and installing one of these . I think a smaller galvanized bowl riveted to the top of the feed pan would be cool too. I haven't been able to find a smaller galv. bowl that would work though. Maybe using a stainless pet bowl would work too.

I am looking for barn lights as well. Menards sells one for $175 which I thought was overpriced - then I went online and found they normally(??) sell for $350-600!

I wanted the gooseneck type which were visually appealing, there are some cheaper galvanized units which are more utilitarian.

I have seen the porcelain bulb shields at the swap meets for about $10 each.. Can't be that hard to bend the conduit and thread the ends to make your own... .

Less than 12 units cost &128.99

Looked into building them myself but end quality for outside lighting fixtures would not be nearly the same.

I purchased 2 of the 17" RLM and one 14" RLM. The 17" are going over the 10'x10' and 12'x12' doors. The 14" is going over the 4' man door. Cost on 14" is $130 vs the $140 for the 17". Shipping for the three was $36.

Included a couple of pics of the shop project: 36'x36' with 15' eve pole building.

Bending thinwall to make the gooseneck is easy. Use at least 3/4" - 1" is better. Don't try to attach it with a flange - it isn't strong enough. Run it through a hole a foot or so inside and fasten to structure. Look for my post here on how I put sockets into bare porcelain shells I bought cheap. Many others have done it too, and for far less than $500. It ain't rocket engineering.

(misnomer alert: rocket science is simple. Engineering to make a rocket actually work is the hard part)

I bought one at a Fleamarket last year, touched up the porcelain and repainted the EMT. Looks awesome centered over the garage door! We saw two fluted ones later, little rougher but definitely earlier.
I have my eye on one on an old guys garage which will probably cave in this winter, it matches mine so come Spring time, I'll try to buy it!
