I started my apprenticeship in 1970 at a VW dealership and a German fellow had come to Canada to work and that is very similar to what he had to keep his Hazet tools in. Hazet tools are very good quality.

There's at least one serious collector of Hazet Assistents here on the board - I recall seeing pictures they posted of a whole row of them, of various vintages. I think they're a neat idea and wonder why they never caught on in the US.

Nice pickup. I had a similar one years ago that I ended up gifting to my kid brother when he was setting up his first shop. I replaced the casters and wheels with pneumatic tires (still swivel and locking on one side) as his driveway was just about as 'rustic' as yours. It made it easy for him to roll around outside.

Sometime in the late 70's I had bought all the VW stuff from a widow whose husband had worked for VW for many years. There was an old one included that I used for a while, but ended up selling some years ago. It just didn't work out for my needs. I knew they were in demand at the time, and was happy someone got it. He probably restored it.

Price maybe? New 166N are around $1100. I wonder what the prices in the 70s/80s were? I bet similar US made trolleys at the time were probably a helluva lot cheaper than a german made one.

That's a cool setup. Space for tools inside, and a parts tray on top. Very nice find.

Me too, I just spent an hour watching videos on restoring one. Have never heard of them but now I want a VW Beetle like I had in 75 and one of those toolboxes.

Awesome score. W-Germany.
I have a later 166N and a 169. Also the cantilever toolbox, forget the model #. Been collecting and using Hazet hand tools for over 30yrs.

Thanks everyone. I did read every post on The Samba thread. Lots of good info. Probably the best thread regarding these boxes. I haven't really had a chance to clean it up yet, but I will post some post cleanup pics.

Looks cool but how do you move it? I dont see a wagon handle and it looks maybe 2ft tall closed. Are you supposed to bend over and push it? Maybe the uprights swivel around to use as a handle and you hope it doesn't run up on your heels??

Anyone looking for a bit less expensive option, but similar form factor, I recently picked up Beta C27S (~$500 on Amazon). So far really liking it. Drawers slide out half way in both directions. Need to make a thread for it once it's all set up.

So the 2 vertical supports swivel. So I just swivel them up and can pull it around. Right now I just have it fully open. I did get a good deal on it. It is essentially the same as the current model.

Yeah! Those Beta's are neat too. I think they come in the original orange as well.

Picked up an interesting little tool cart a few days ago.

Pretty clean Hazet Assistent 166N. Probably circa 1985-89. Everything works just fine. Came with a bunch of tools. Some cheap, some nice. Going to clean and polish it up and start using it.
Cool, looks like it would useful at parties as well!
