Got my Orange 26” HF box! (PIC HEAVY WARNING)

(PIC HEAVY WARNING)

Hey guys,

I picked up the red 5 drawer tool cart and folding side tray during the HF parking lot sale back in March 18’. This was pretty soon after the blue became available. I went with red for the sole fact that the folding side tray (at the time) only came in red as well as the magnetic accessories. Grabbed it at $149.99 which was pretty much right before the price started creeping up. Used a 20% on the tray. Got it back to the shop and assembled it. While it looked great, I just never could warm up to it for some reason. Pushed it over in the corner and put the plastic back over it, still trying to figure out the best use for it. This is in my home garage and I’m working out of two repo’d SO Classic 78 boxes but wanted something to roll around.

Fast forward several months later, new colors available in the carts and rumors of those colors coming to the bigger boxes. Got an idea to try a 26” lower, still easy enough to roll around and much more storage. A few weeks ago, I put my one year old, but never used cart on Craigslist. Sold in less than a day and thanks to today’s pricing, was able to get my money back. Stopped by my local HF a few days before this last parking lot sale. Went in to pre-order the orange 26” lower and it showed one in stock. After some disbelief on myself and the employee, a stock guy in the back found it. Got it for $249 with a coupon and used a 20% on the orange side tray. Way easier to assemble than the cart. Bolt on the casters and handle. Came very well packaged with no damage and has three keys. The handle can go on either side and has two threaded holes and two guide pin holes on each side of the box. The hardware that came with the tray is carriage bolts with square shoulders. Didn’t want to mess with those possibly spinning while trying to tighten them, so I picked up some regular bolts for that and used the flange nuts that came with the tray. Bolts were M8x1.25-15’s. Took the top two drawers out. Used the left pivot pin hole for the first bolt and drilled three new holes. While the tray isn’t as deep as the box itself, it works out great. I may add some drawer liner to it and some kind of bumpers for when it rests against the cabinet when not it use.

Very pleased with the box so far. No mysterious "Series 2" badge as the catalogs show.
The casters are decent and the provided drawer liners are ok. The build / powdercoat quality of the box are spot on. No regrets at all.

(Two different SKU's on the cabinet, I have the 56235.)

Congrats! I have a 44, and I've been eyeing one of those 26's for a while, despite the fact that I TOTALLY have no need for it. But I want it...

Thanks javy! And I understand the want part, tends to outweigh the needs part quite often!

Very nice! I think the 26" cabinet is a far better choice than a cart, though I've yet to really understand the whole cart thing for home use? I can see it in a professional setting, but I think for home use a person would have to have one hell of a large garage for a need to have a mobile box. A nice need to have though! I'd be envious!

I actually like the 26” roller because it’s limited surface area makes for a great short term tool keeper without inviting flat surface disease.

My 26 top chest sits on a rolling cart so the top hutch is more easily Accessible.

Beautiful boxes! They are a great value. Tool organization is a great investment.

Rolling a 26" cart out to the driveway beats making 20 trips to carry all you tools out by hand.

So do you have an extra set of common tools loaded inside?

or do you pack the drawers with what you think you would need from your main box before you start?

Who works on their car in the driveway?

I guess that should be a subject for another thread! :lol_hitti

Those of us that own a home with no room for a garage, but have a workshop in the walkout basement.

I'm seriously thinking about moving my cart out to the shed for backyard tools and buying 2 26" boxes as a replacement right now. One for automotive hand hand tools, and one for misc home needs tools.

Oh man! Orange is my favorite color. My Craftsman boxes are getting full. I usually don’t shop at Harbor Freight but where else am I going to find an orange tool chest without getting raped by the tool truck man?

Might be better with a single 44", I find the 26" to be disappointing with the drawer depth. My second drawer is sockets being one of the more common things to grab but I can't fit a bunch of my sockets in there, seems right about 32mm is too big which means the 32, 35, and 36 all sit in a different drawer and I can't put an organizer in there or some of the larger sockets that do fit won't any more. Also can't keep a 30mm wrench in the holder in the top drawer and a couple of the ratchets hit the lip of the box when opening the drawer.

I got one of these as well as a "customer return" for $150, parking lot sale. No damage, works great. Customer just decided on a bigger unit or something. Mine is red though.

Drawer liners are good, they do work. Slides are smooth.

I don't have much of anything in there except my not used much tools as I planned on getting a top chest for my hand tools. Seems well built. And yes, I have finally gotten a top chest. Its being shipped to my door. Bought a Waterloo PCH-266RD. Im trying to support USA manufacturing everywhere I can.

Congrats on your box. I looked at the orange cart the other day seeing if it'd match my Evolution saw (it doesn't, but still nice box anyway).
I have the 26 top and bottom in blue. Really like it. If I had a complaint, definitely the drawer depth compared to the 44. But I've been able to get my tools sorted regardless. I would like 2 big drawers on the bottom except for one. Mine's getting full w cordless bare tools.

I wish HF would come out with a 26" but lift top like the tool cart. I started with tool cart for home garage because I liked the lift top for sockets. Not long after got the 26" for more space.

Slightly off topic, but how strong are the side trays? I've seen video of people standing on snapon trays, assume the HF ones aren't quite so strong, but I haven't looked at rating or handled one.

I wouldn't try that myself. [emoji3] I just got mine and starting to load up the big draw with sockets. It has two sets of slides and it works nicely.

The box and the website both state 35 lbs. I'd go for that. I've had nothing heavier that a rugged laptop or an iPad on mine and those obviously are just fine. I'd feel comfortable with 35lbs but that might be about it.

The angled support piece meets the flat tray part about half way through. I think if you had much weight on the tray part past that support point, it might bend.

I’ve seen those videos as well, and they always make me laugh. I wouldn’t stand on my US General trays, but they do a fantastic job of holding my tools, and I have several step stools and a ladder that combined cost me several times less than what one Snap-On box costs.
