Nice... I was thinking about snagging an old telephone pole the other day to put one up myself.

Not a telephone pole.
The flag will snag on every splinter in a wood pole and will be ripped to shreds the first day.

I got a 28 foot aluminum street light pole.
theflagguys.com sells a kit designed for the street light pole to mount the 'truck'

It's a pride thang. also with all the illegals coming across a border it's a signal and land mark for texans to let them know they're still in the us,

I fly mine as a matter of pride. Texas is the only state in the union to have once been it's own Republic. As a matter of fact, from 1836-1845 Texas was known as 'The Republic of Texas'. A distinction which should not be taken lightly, considering that our forefathers fought for that freedom.

And for the record, I also proudly fly Old Glory.

It is still referred to as "The Sovereign State of Texas", by many.

Cut mine every week too... except for those 6 months in the middle of the year where we do not get any rain, and the grass turns brown. :)

Very proud to be a Texan, so I display that flag. Since Nov. 2008, not so proud to be an American, but am still glad that I am. Our new gaggle of politicians have turned Americans into jokes for the rest of the world.

When the heck is Texas seceding?

d*mn, do I need to buy more ammo...

sad that you are not proud to be an American.

I fly both. USA & USMC.

Nice, all my MC friends also fly both.

A better question is, why doesn't anyone in other states fly their flags? Every state has a state flag.

No room on my flag pole. also find it better to be pround to be an american. flying my flag 24/7

Well in Illinois we don't have much to be proud of...

lol, cant help you there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawaii

I was going to point out that Hawaii was also a self governed kingdom when it was annexed, but this article also mentions the Vermont Republic, and the California Republic which I did not know about...

In reading more about the latter you could really argue that they don't really count, California lasting only 26 days and Vermont 14 years..... If you included those you would have to count the Conch Republic, and State of Franklin.

you bring a good point. seems texas things they were the only state. but they wernt. makes sence that they call them selves the lone star state. full of them selves :D :bounce:

and please dont get to pissed, i just like making fun of texans. something about steers and q........ :D loved that movie

Admittedly, I'm possibly a little too proud, but I'm stepping up on the soap box regardless:

1. Hawai'i was a kindgom, not a republic. (yes, I'm splitting hairs) :)

2. Taken from the article you linked...Hawaiʻi is one of four states that were independent prior to becoming part of the United States,...and one of only two (Texas was the other) with formal diplomatic recognition internationally.

3. Yes, The California Republic lasted 26 days, but never had international diplomatic recognition. And 26 days? Really?

4. Also taken from the article you linked...Vermont called itself the "State of Vermont". The name "Vermont Republic" was invented in the 20th century... The people of Vermont thought of themselves as part of the American Revolution and considered themselves Americans, even if Congress was unable to recognize the existence of Vermont so long as the state of New York claimed the land...The Vermont Republic was the "reluctant republic" because many early citizens favored political union with the United States rather than independence.

5. No one can argue that any of the aforementioned states fought harder or sacrificed more than Texas did to become free and self-governing.

6. Although not likely, it is very possible that Texas would still be a Republic if it weren't for the Civil War. At the very least, had Sam Houston had his way, Texas' time as a Republic would have lasted much longer.

Ok, I'm off my soap box now. :D

The annexation of Texas was important to both Texas and the United States. If you look at an 1845 map, you'd see that Texas extended all the way up to Wyoming. If you compare an 1845 map with an 1850 railroad map, you can see that the Union Pacific railroad would've gone through the Republic of Texas (foreign land at the time). Statehood has many benefits. A chief concern at the time would have been protection from Mexico as well as being free of many trade restrictions and tariffs. Here's the two aforementioned maps for comparison. Texas claimed and was recognized by the US as owning all the "disputed territory" in the 1845 map if I remember my Texas history correctly.

As to the question of why we should be proud to be Texans is just as important as why we should be proud to be Americans. It's just like asking, "Why are you proud of your family name?". It's the history behind us. It's like being proud that each of us contributes to making the US the richest and best place to live in the world. For what its worth, Texas alone has the 15th highest GDP in the world. Things like that don't just come from everyone loafing around. Every person should be proud to be from their state and their country. If they aren't, they need to make some changes or "vote with their feet".
