The other day I bought 2 Gray ratchets off of Kijiji. For $40 I got a 1/2" ratchet, a 3/8" ratchet, a 3/8" extension and a rebuild kit for the 1/2". Everything was in decent condition but I decided to disassemble the ratchets to inspect them for wear and relube them.

After taking everything apart, I cleaned up the parts using brake clean and then some WD40. All parts were in good condition. So other than some rusty screws I replaced and the lever and screw which were missing from the 1/2", I didn't need any other parts from the rebuild kit. I then lubed the teeth with 30 motor oil and lubricated the rest of the moving part's surface with Lucas grease. I then ressembled everything. I used red Loctite on the lever screws as these have a habit of loosening off which usually results in the lever falling off and getting lost! Overall it was a fairly easy job, the worst part was getting the "clickers" back in while not knocking out the spring loaded ball, especially on the 3/8" which because of it's size is harder to work on. Here are some pics I took...

...and I bought the flex head 3/8" Gray ratchet.

Am I too much of a bottom feeder or were most of his prices....ummm...optimistic?

...Rob

They were a little high for the condition of the stuff. I offered him $200 for that 36" 3/4" SO ratchet/breaker bar but he wouldn't take it. Some good pieces he had but I'm a cheap polock who doesn't like to part with my money.Do you ever hit up the St. Catharines flea market?

We all bought from the same guy. He seems like a decent guy, I know the guy that has the Bronco in the shop fropm my Cdn tire days. I think the name of street is Alma st.

Rob, I think his prices were pretty optimistic, especially considering the condition of most of it was average (and below average when compared to most mechanics tools). I loved the Snap On air tools he had though. Even though the price isn't that great, I'm still drooling over the 1/2" impact. How sweet would that be to use 2x a week to take tires off my stock car lol. If it was cleaned up the tool box he had was decent too imo, forget the price though. Most of the other stuff (like sockets) were mixed brands (mostly Mastercrap), and somewhat beat up.

Yeah, almost every week. I've pulled some good stuff out of there but it's been pretty dire lately. Jordan Valley Flea is much better in the warm weather.

Gregg33...was that the $500 impact? Too rich for my blood, I'll stick with my IR231. I think he wanted $400 for the toolbox. He seemed like a good guy having some tough times...no haggling from me. Kinda wish I could have purchased more from him.

I THINK the $500 one was the 3/4 SO impact. If I'm not mistaken he wanted $250 for 1/2". New it would cost $400+ with taxes. If it works as good as it looks it's probably worth that, but the most my cheap *ss would pay, would probably be $200. But I'm pretty short of funds right now so I never made an offer. He also had a similar style/line SO "butterfly" impact didn't really notice if it was 3/8" or 1/2". Right now I got a 1/2" Campbell-Hausfeld (Taiwan) impact. I've had it for several years and it works good, but a Snap On would be nice. ;)
