Good Day Everyone!

Building a new 30 x 40 shop and am getting different opinions on having my 5" floor protruding out the doorways..mainly due to loss of heat.
Is this the correct way to install radiant floor heating ( of course I have insulated 4' down the walls and will insulate under the floor.)

Any help is appreciated!!

Greg: keep adding pictures as you can with as many details as you can think of because some of the members could design a space ship to fly to Pluto and maybe they did.

here's your post from the intro thread since you are at work to get you maybe some better answers. good luck

ALL: Good Day everyone!

New to the site and seems there is a wealth of knowledge on here..

Building a new 30x40 shop and at this point I have poured frost walls and insulated 4' down in preparation for a heated floor.

This is where I am confused...I have backfilled leaving 2" below the door cut outs to install 2" of insulation under the poured floor and extended the insulation 5" up the walls for the poured floor therefore the floor will extend through the openings uninsulated??

Hope I am fairly clear on this??

So not sure about this portion of the floor extending outside the heated area and what I am going to lose??

My good friend kept the floor flush to the cut outs leaving the insulation exposed at the door and place polymer strips over it.

Should I remove fill and pour flush???

Think I need a beer

(Greg Smith's post from intro thread above)

Sub: Greg is a brand new member with a serious crisis or dilemma with his awesome garage so he might not get your positive humor at the moment. i hope he does later and i did and thanks for the laugh. keep making us smile as you have time.

Greg: thanks for the compliment and i wish i had more answers for you. like i mentioned if you can get many more pictures and list more details about the heating system you are using and as much as possible i hope there is a fix to your current situation.

good luck and i'll stop in to see how you are doing if i have time or PM me if you need help with some forum type issues. i'm not a MOD, but here to help if i can or PM a MOD that might be available.

we are not customer service, but i'm sure some of us have been helped by this forum and we are just paying it forward like i am. also as i mentioned if you can get more detailed on the posts your answers will be better. are you the General Contractor or are you using a friend that doesn't know the answer to this?

I was a bricklayer for years and have had my hand on every part of building houses at one time or another, sooo I just set off on a mission to build myself ,asking lots of questions and doing lots of research..that's how I stumbled on this site.
I have friends showing up tomorrow to start framing and hopefully will have walls up before trusses show up.
Not pouring the floor until Fall to allow fill to settle, of course wetting and tamping in the mean time.
Will definitely keep posting and include pics and hope to get all the info I can!

Thanks again guys..and a good chuckle after work as well Sublime!!
I have another friend with a General Lee you may like to see!! I will get some pics of that too!!

Thanks again!

Greg what are the different opions you are getting for this?

Who is doing the flat work? And what are there thoughts?

Who is doing the pex runs and what is there thoughts?

And due have a third thought in this that is out from left field confusing you?

Have you looked through the heat and ac forum here lots of great info.

And also in the flooring forum as well

And maybe a close up pic of just the area your talking about and use some scrap 2x4 in place of cement to stage the different ways to have the poor done?

I'm a noob in the floor department but I'm gonna have to learn soon as my place is getting closer to that stage.

Drives alls good,

Greg ps would love t c a pic of a your buds general lee if not to much trouble!

There's a few pics of my 68 scattered in my garage build thread.

Good Day,

To answer your questions some of the opinions are related to the elevation of the floor, some say to grade low enough that the pour comes flush with the cut outs for the doors therefore completely encased in the insulation on the walls as seen in pics, others say I am fine the way I am and pour the 5" floor in the cut outs as it is right now..
I am doing the work myself, have ran Pex previously in a buds shop and am currently researching it and how I will zone it and which product I will use for under floor insulation.
Love the Charger and doing a great job on the Shop there!
Will update pics of both my shop as we got a couple walls framed now and also of the "General Lee" asap..

Take Care!

I think that's what I am going to do, at least with the input I have received so far..I believe the heat loss out the door way will be minimal.
My not so High Speed stick is not allowing me to download pics from home so will download once I get back to work..
Thanks Sublime!!

Pour it like it is. Your heat loss on your floor will be minimal. Besides, your subgrade looks good to me. Letting it settle exposed for awhile will insure the longevity of your slab. Good luck brother.

Greg: i guess i don't know of the Holidays in Canada or are the ones you are mentioning special to Ontario? care to enlighten me (us)?

also any new close up picture of the doorway with some more detail about the flooring and your options to fix or install? I saw mentioned about pouring into the cut out which would be way down the list on the options if that's what was said.

nice looking walls BTW.

congrats on the progress and more pictures when you are able to post them are always appreciated.

cheers

Hey Drives.. the Holidays I am referring to are not Statutory Holidays its just the warm months we are limited to here and the time of year when everyone takes off and puts their feet up for a couple weeks.
Heres a couple pics of the Man Door cut out just for example..2" of Blue SM will bring me flush to the cut out then 5" of concrete, feed back I am getting here is stating this is one preferred method but there is more than one..
I will install all the insulation , screen and Pex tubing however for the price of renting a power trowel and at the risk of getting guys together to help having it poured will be subbed out.

Thanks for the input Drives!

Trusses show up at 9:30 am, hope the rain holds off long enough to get them spread out.
As for the floor I have come to the decission to fill (pour) the door cut outs and pour the floor up to the insulation so as not to try to heat the outside. This is how my buds shop is and seems to be working perfectly..

Yes I am , in fact I am going to pour a 5" curb (so to say) between the insulation and the outside wall..this is an after thought and I could have prevented this by adjusting the height of the floor..but I want the heated floor to be completely insulated around its permeter and underneath.
Kind of hard to explain but if you look at the pics of the cut out I need to add insulation to be level to the insulation on the walls and pour the floor seperate from a 5" pour between the insulation and outside wall..hope that explains it.
