Anyone familiar with grinder pumps? My alarm light went on, and when I opened the top of the ditch cover, there was water all the way to the top. I drained the water, but no change. If I turn on the power, it seems to run non stop.

Model is an Environment One Model 2000

Any advice is appreciated

E1 are pretty much top of the line units.

I suspect the rubber boot that engages with the auger went out. That happened on my unit 20+ years ago. Zero ability to pump effluent.

I was on a county force main system (Fairfax County) that required check valves in the line right where our discharge lateral tapped into the main. The check valve ensures that your neighbors **** does not come back at you while they are pumping and you are not.

My check valve failed in the closed position and then the boot blew out.

Freemire and Associates used to have the lock on sales, startup, and commissioning of these things in Northern VA. YMMV

I had to dig up and replace the check valve and then the boot.

Freemire came out and checked the motor amps while running (but not pumping) and from experience knew that the boot had blown.

When you say check valve, is that the shut-off next to it?

No.

Fairfax County would not honor the local check valve at the unit. That allows you to jerk the pump without taking a bath.

There was separate check valve out at the street where the lateral from the house tied into the main. This is what failed on mine and caused the boot to blow out due to over pressure.

I thought my grinder pump failed...replaced it with identical, so I thought, grinder pump...

8k later I finally figure out I did NOT have a grinder pump....but a large lift pump. Carefully check model numbers....grinder pumps do not have the same lift curve that non-grinders do.

I only say this so that if you do swap out...you are careful to determine that it is indeed a grinder. The model numbers on mine were identical...only a small letter G on the other side was the difference.

When it runs, I assume it is not pumping just running. If that is correct that would mean your impeller probably is not working. I have several grinder pumps on rentals. They get clogged from femine products and baby wipes. I also have a shut off valve in the pit that I can close to prevent back flow. Then my pump slides up on rails. Easy to figure out the problem at that point.
