I'm setting up a piece of machinery and the manufacturer suggests verifying a good ground like this:
"Connect a 100 watt bulb between 120 VAC hot and the ground you are testing. Then measure voltage between 120 VAC neutral and the ground, voltage should be below 0.75 volts"
I did that and get just over 25 volts, repeated the test right at the ground rod with the same results. So I'm going to get a new copper ground rod to replace the old one which looks like it is very rusty bare steel, plus the dirt is bone dry and I don't know how long the old rod is.
Can someone please explain in easy to follow terms what the bulb is doing in this test? And secondly does it sound like the best or right way to test the ground?
