Shop air update...

Got a little project done just before, hung my present from Santa.

Dug out some fittings form the spares tray...

View media item 66198
From the factory they did a horrible job on the Teflon tape so this was taken off and redone.

View media item 66199
I chose to mount it up high above head height, and just above the retractable clothes line we use in the garage during inclement weather.

View media item 66200
This position gives good pivot access to both outside and inside the garage.

View media item 66201
And it can pivot flat right against the wall...

View media item 66202
Or flat left against the wall...

View media item 66203
So I do like it, mechanism to extract and retract works well and it does not bounce or move around on it's mount. Next is to redo the regulator assembly and probably introduce some copper lines just so I have something to think about polishing :D

Also will build a new slightly different bench above the compressor as I don't plan on putting the twins Bach there.

Hopefully some more shop time tonight, having a daddy nap with my son now.

Cheers GB.

GB,
So much Christmas garage progress, you're making me feel lazy now. But very nice improvements with the foam draw liner and the air hose reel. Looking forward to some tutorials on proper car polishing in the new year.
Happy New Year!!!

GB: i'm hoping to have a big compressor set up by the end of next year and gathering information as i see what other member's do and your rotating hose mounting is AWESOME. nicely done for work inside and outside the garage.

also i did start a Buffing 101 thread which is maybe close to detailing a few weeks ago that has some good tips on it that you might learn from or add to as you can. here's the link:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346774

cheers and i'd still like to see you and a few Aussies host some more threads in the tool sections if you have time to.

It's been a pretty busy week of QFT (Quality Family Time) this last week or so, so not so much QST (Quality Shed Time)...however over the last couple of days I've managed a few hours in the garage to get
some tidying up done and finally got a start re-working the garage door alignment since I installed the insulation (which has been working great so far).

Completely unwound the springs and started from scratch. After lots of clamping, and unwinding/winding with the winding bars (some 1/2" steel bars about 1' long) I ended up with a nicely balanced door where it lifts with minimal effort, stays where it is at 1/2 way up and at all the way up and doesn't go crashing down or anything (all as per the factory instructions) Went in 1/4 and 1/8 turn increments (which is why it becomes time consuming) but the sweet spot was 7 1/2 turns on all 4 springs for my door.

So now my next challenge is getting the door opener adjustment reset. It's all over the place (and has been for a long time even before I added the insulation) but that can be first up for tomorrow which is hopefully just a day of pottering around.

Edit: I should add that playing with your garage door springs or any components under tension is rather dangerous so keep your hands/knuckles and other bits out of the way in case they let go on you or you slip with your spanner or bar or something.

Seems we are about to continue on our journey around the sun for another year in a few mins.

Cheers GB :beer2:

Happy New Year over there. Glad you were safe with those door springs and all is well adjusted. Give us a heads up look at 2017 before we get there ourselves.

Did we pass "Go"?

I didn't get $200.

Funnily enough Andy, neither did I. :headscrat

Thanks same to you RM, I think you are a couple hours in to your new year now.

A good quiet start to the new year with some more tidying up today and pottering around. Had my young bloke hang out in the garage today and he was off playing with tools and such keeping into mischief.

Fiddled with the garage door opener this morning, after adjusting the motor mount unit height (it was too low), and re-doing the bracket from the trolley to the door (it was installed the wrong way from what the instructions show - which I didn't do) it opens and closes better to where I'm happy but I'm not fiddling with it any more. I dare say there is a Lift Master 8500 side mount opener in my future  these overhead chain units are really horrible things IMO - even to look at.

Hopefully another pottering quiet day tomorrow :)

Cheers GB.

Starting off the new year

Yesterday was a pretty busy and productive day, the girls went shopping so the boys ran some early morning errands and we hung out in the garage again.

The night before I was in the garage tinkering and measuring a few things and then I had this idea.

Take the left hand cabinet from this....

View media item 66648
after emptying it out of course...

View media item 66649
and move it to the RH side, and move the whole unit right to the corner and up about 3/4" also to allow room to clear the bench storage trays.

View media item 66650
As the door on that end cabinet went from left opening to right opening, I've just flipped it for now. Might get the forstner bit out later and relocate the hinges to the other side to save having holes from a handle relocation.

View media item 66652
I really like these small parts trays and picked up a couple extra ones in the morning (planned part of the errand run). :D

View media item 66653
So the plan now is to make up cabinetry of the same dimension as the last end cabinet in the pic (probably open front) and wrap it around the left hand side corner and replace the shelf with all the spray can types on it, this should tidy up the area somewhat.

View media item 66651
Wifie is back off to work this morning, so we gave her daily a quick clean and wash which was a chance to try out some of the new microfibre cloths.

Really like this micro-noodle wash mit, in fact I think I'll get another so that I can use both hands kinda like the old wax-on/wax-off thing.

View media item 66644
The green one is for glass and mirrors, did the job so no complaints there...

View media item 66645
Large *********** weave is for drying, it had started raining by the time we needed to dry it so no real commentary as yet. But it did seem to soak up the water pretty well and not feel water logged.

View media item 66646
Had run out of the previous cheap tyre shine spay can stuff so I grabbed some bowdens tyre sheen. Lyndon gave good reviews of this so I thought I'd try it out. Did wifie's tyres early this morning before she left for work with the black applicator - only a few sprays so hopefully it lasts a while as the spray cans only gave me a couple of washes worth to a can.

View media item 66647
With my new fondness for Kaizan foam draw lining, my new dilemma is horizontal draw surface area. I'm thinking of getting rid of the pegboard as it just looks cluttered and moving most of it into drawers. So what to do ????

I have this cupboard (bottom right in pic) that is largely not well organized, so thought I could make up drawers to sit inside the base part of it. Then I looked at the price of heavy duty sliders at the big box store and figured for that much I'll look at tool chests. Problem is that this cupboard will only let me have about 23" max width so not wide enough to squeeze a 27" chest in.

View media item 66655
View media item 66654
Then I thought I could move the shop vac and pressure washer out of their bins and into that bottom cabinet and then that would make room for a 27" chest. If I lost the fridge I could fit a full 42" chest in which would look nice also. But I don't have anywhere else for the fridge and lets face it I can roll over to this on my stool for a cool beverage

So my current line of thought is to move the vac and pressure washer and aim for a 27" tool cabinet in their place.

View media item 66656
Another thing I'm trying to do in my space is setup so that when I need to work after hours or from home I have a comfortable space. Last night after all were off to sleepy land I was fiddling around temp mounting a couple of 24" screens up with some wall mount screen brackets. These are too low and only usable for sitting on the stool. Can't go higher as they need to move left which goes over the power distribution board cover.

Going to try bringing down a 27" TV/monitor from upstairs later as I think just a larger single screen will be fine (I'm just used to running 3 screens on my main workstations).

View media item 66657
Anyway that was yesterday....

Here are the tool chests I've been looking at. They are as far as I can tell a pretty much duplicate/same as the Harbor Freight cabinets that many of the US guys get their hands on.

27" Tool Chest.

42" Tool Chest.

Great day I say!:rocker: Good improvements.

The Armstrong method is an old colloquialism for doing it manually. Sorry if I sent you on a wild goose chase. I have six overhead doors now and no plans for a power opener.

GB, having played Tetris with a lot of cabinets, I think I see an alternative:

  1. Take down the tall cabinets again (after emptying them again),
  2. Flip the triple-wide cabinet so the double door opening is on the far right (two handles line up in its center),
  3. Mount the single-wide cabinet with the handle on the left lower corner to the left of the triple-wide.
  4. Mount the single-wide cabinet, which was on the end, right-side up with the handle on the right.
I'm probably seeing it wrong and that's a double-wide. If so, you could still move the double-cabinet to the far right and mount the two single cabinets in the same orientation with the two handles on the bottom and right next to each other. You may have to flip the doors around but I don't think it involves drilling new holes and filling the old.

Nice start to the year with some good refinements to your space. Sometimes making this little adjustments to cabinet placement can really make the work space more efficient.

Aha, nup sorry went straight over my head. You will be pleased to know then that there is the "Armstrong" door company who do exist.

Yep headsmack Bob, I should have left that cabinet to the left side and shimmied the bulk across. One of them is triple wide.

I'll fix it up when I add on the new cabinetry.

Thanks For thinking that through.

You have to love it when a great idea happens. As for that handle I am sure you will change it later. I have to ask why do you need more than one screen?

HOTFR8, I work in IT Management/Consulting (20 years now). It is very convenient running multiple screens when I work. Quite often for example I will have email open on the one to the left, a central work screen where I can be on a remote system or be doing my *focus* work, and the one to the right I'll often have with a file manager or spreadsheets etc.

With a higher resolution larger screen it's not as big a deal and I'll elaborate on that later as I've just installed an alternate screen setup :)

Thanks RM, it seems to be coming together thus far.

GB, well done.

QST strikes again..

Regards

I think I'll have to make up the QST poster from your thread and stick somewhere, amazing how much you can get on with when away from the office.

Cheers GB

OK, Sounds like that could work for me as well. Email on one, GJ forum on the next and the HAMB forum on the last :eyecrazy: or may be not. :(

A little fiddling around today, tried the TV/Screen combo option but it didn't work as the resolution of that screen was pretty ordinary.

In the end it turns out I'd forgotten that I had an older 27" Apple screen that wasn't in use at the office, so hooked it up to the old mac mini, did a heap of updates and away we go. The mac screens are very nice high res screens.

Installed my little shelf for it again and it's a good height so I can stand which is better for my back and pottering in the garage.

This will do for the time being, once I make up the new overhead cabinet I'll revisit the dual screen setup possibly on the adjacent wall where the pegboard is currently.

nice work on your ORGANIZING.

Rod, nice job with the hose reel and the cabinets. I'm afraid you've spent too much time over on Taumac's thread watching him play garage Tetris. If that's not the case, then you two must share the same gene pool.:bounce: You guys here on the GJ make it hard for me to want to post pictures of my messy shop. Drives yes the LM can work on my door, I've already been through the instruction manual and checked all the measurements. The current opener is ok for the time being but I do plan on the LM I think in the future.

Sorry not much in the way of car pics yet, once I get a chance to try out the buffer and polish then I can post some pre/post pics.

Lol, yeah I've arranged Gerard's stuff to for him looking at the pics. Don't want to play too much garage tetris but it seems to be a necessary evil to get to a better functioning shop.

Post messy pics, just takes us longer to see what cool stuff you are hiding :)

I've been trying and trying to set the bar low for acceptable clutter, Dan.

And you have the silver sharpie to set where that level is too Andy. :bounce:

"trying to set the bar low for acceptable clutter", at least you have enough room for clutter, I have so much stuff that it takes up that room.!!

If you sheet metal up the roof starting at the new garage end you will have some more room too ????

A little more progress on the small parts areas tonight, not very exciting though…

Did a bit of a tidy up of the stack of small parts tubs (who doesn't like ice cream?) I’ve been using and got them resorted and labelled.

Left with this stack of old tubs for the recycle bin

View media item 66739
And this is where play ended (it’s way past bedtime). Also removed the branding paint from the red trays with a bit of acetone. When I make up the new corner cabinet I'll integrate a shelf just for the grey small parts trays which will get them up off the bench.

View media item 66736
Been working back through the current clutter pile, just a bit to go now. Then I need to get back into getting that cut off saw finished so I can use it.

View media item 66737
I’ve also decided to make up draws for that base cabinet. Have found a decent priced drawer slider supply source that look ok and I should be able to get about 10 draws around the 3” deep mark. Still have a heap of pine from the french cleat wall left over so that will make up the drawer frames.

OK, now your just going to far. Someone please go to GB place and throw some nuts and bolt around so we can all feel better about our shops. LOL. GB, your place looks great.

Hint of advice. You better get some paint of those cabinets before Shorty sees it.

Got a suggestion. WHAT IF.... LOL what if raised the cabinets to same height as ones to the right? Then put another short cabinet next to the other.

Yep some white paint would like good on those lower cabinets. Gerard has white paint, a lot of new brushes and some mad paint skills.

I think you should have a break from all that, come over and start on my west wall!!! Like your planning.

Terrick I think I need a break now, dang back to work next week. Need to clean up the office workshops there now as they are absolutely horrible. One day we'll get a cuppa in and you can show me your west wall.

GB, now you have really set the bar up a notch or 10 in terms of organisation..

Regards

Thanks very much 1/2 Cup, I'm totally humbled but am really just trying to get through the bits that I'm not happy with (like looking though unlabeled small parts trays every time to find what I am after knowing it's in one of them) and get some ideas implemented that are the result of the evening beverage ponders and from others here on GJ. Making the time is the hardest part with a young family and both full time working, seems evenings after all are asleep is going to have to be my thing for quiet work anyway (at least nothing more than a vacuum cleaner running) :headscrat

For those who are interested in organizing their shop, Tool Academy has my vote:

Your shop is getting a little too cool for it's britches! I love the small parts workup storage you have done. May steal an idea or two. Your doing great on all of it!!

Best Regards
Herb

Mr. Herb, always appreciate you dropping in and for the kind comments.

Two plus monitors. Only way to work.

Yep some white paint would like good on those lower cabinets. Gerard has white paint, a lot of new brushes and some mad paint skills.

Garage is looking great!!!!

Cheers Shorty, I made those cabinets in a hurry a few years ago, I'm going to edit or remake them a bit better and then they can get painted. Once I make up the extra overhead shelves/cabinets (haven't fleshed it all out yet) I'll work out paint and colour, need to do the cleat wall also.

Thanks all for dropping in and for the comments.

Small update coming shortly.

Cheers GB.

Pushed through tonight and got the last bit of clutter on my mobile bench sorted. Most of it was a couple of containers with just misc bolts/screws and **** that I hadn’t bothered to put away properly - and I still haven’t. I had an idea of using a couple of the small parts bins as “Dump” bins for such items and maybe when they are either full or every other month or something I can empty them out and put away in to their correct fastener spot or trash them totally.

Anyway the mobile bench is back to clutter free (just some scrap stock to go back away).

A few years ago my dad made these tool boxes for us. I normally use this when I need to go help someone and load it up with the tools I need. The top (which is also a seat) slides up and you have space for fasteners etc.

Anyway I’m constantly moving this around as there has been no real decent place to sore it. Today I mounted a cleat on it and it now has a home on the cleat wall. I plan to give it a sand and an oil soon too to keep it in good form for years to come.

I had issues getting this photo in post last night.

In this image cabinet on other wall to right. Raise cabinets on the back wall to match. Then add another one above the monitor. My thought is matchs and gives more from work surface to bottom of cabinets.
