Looking good GB, keep it up!

Thanks RW, you have got me wanting to get back onto sorting out the liftmaster 8500 now. They appear to be sold under a different importer brand here due to our 50Hz and your 60Hz motors being different in them I dare say. Thanks for stopping by.

That was a fun read. Took me a few mornings and some evenings, but it was worth it. I love the workspace for your boy! Thanks for sharing.

Much appreciated Unruh. Thanks for following my ramblings.

Nice looking welds. Why not just bolt the hinges on?

Kirk, no real reason mate. Just having fun gluing metal together at the moment when time allows.

Nice work on the gates and posts.
Just checking in while its raining.

Hope that eyeball of yours is settling down Terrick, that is an ouchy for sure. Thanks for checking in.

Last Saturday left me almost done with the fab and testing phase until I didn't account for enough left-to-right height difference in the driveway which was a bit of a ******, I had allowed for 2".

Spent an age too getting this all plumb and level.

View media item 88497
Even made one of Andy's tapered shims (that concrete is not flat and level at the bottom. It's also very hard concrete, took at least 5 mins with a new masonry bit just to drill 3" deep on each hole).

View media item 88500
Had I gone 3" it would have been ok :(

View media item 88498
Needs to come up 2" more. The bottom black line is the concrete level on the other side. I've got it all mocked up ready to weld onto, so hopefully that can happen in the morning. Bit of a ****** but it is what it is. Could have been a 4" error and I wouldn't have admitted to that one :lol_hitti

(ignore that shim sticking out)

It's quite windy here today with gusts over 85km (50mph). Hope that buggers off before the weekend.

Cheers GB

GB it can be pretty frustrating getting gates all straight and level but worth the effort in the end but you have done well.
The other thing I hate is that you also get seasonal movement.

Thanks 1/2 cup, yep certainly proving to be fiddly this one, another few hours yesterday.

Welds and a grinder cover a multitude of sins. Been there several times.

xtremek, righton that's the best thing with steel.

A lot easier than using wood. I love making gates from steel. Keep up the good work.

Thanks terrick, getting there slowly. Only a few hours each weekend on this is driving me a bit crazy at the moment, just too much on at this end of the year with kiddies and all. Learning a bit with this gate build which will go towards future builds.

You can always dig down, pour new concrete. Lol. Looking good.

Thanks but I've done enough digging here shorty, the ground is horrible stuff. Sticky clay - horrible.

All, so we now have a good height sorted and the gate closes with the clearance that I originally had anticipated on the opposing side. I added a bit of 2" section at the bottom to lift it and cut tapers so I can deal with bolts etc. The whole thing will sit on structural grout once I'm finished.

You can see the marks on the cladding where the previous installed aluminium post was poorly done and just rubbed against it. It relied on some crappy plastic plugs which are those nasty holes in the brickwork down at the bottom.

I ended up with my upper brackets hitting a morter joint now too which is a bit annoying. I just upped the dyna bolts size and length going in there.

There is a bit more flex in this post than I was expecting when the gate is hanging on it. It's 5mm thick (what's that a bit under 1/4") RHS. Up high I'll need to add a decent size coach bolt or 2 and pickup the old hardwood studs on the house - the post is set on a stud line for that reason as well but I had hoped not to need to anchor that high.

Ignore all the green painted brickwork etc, that is one of my final handful of reno jobs to get around to along with resurfacing/sealing that driveway concrete. All the pavers were a score for free some years ago and are slowly being allocated to outdoor projects.

You can see the automatic gate arm hanging there too ready to go back into use.

View media item 88567
I think what I am going to do is get the posts %100 done including paint then get them set and fixed. Then just get the final touches done on the gate before painting it.

The gate has a little sag over that span (nearly 9') but I didn't know how much there would be until I hung it. It may need a diagonal brace and/or one of those gate sprung wheel things. The gate itself is only about 55kg (122lbs), not overly heavy but heavy enough.

That's the weekend done, today was QFT.

Cheers GB.

Still fiddling...

I figured while I'm in there might as well get the brickwork sorted so I don't have to pull this main post off every 5 minutes.

Repaired the marks on the cladding and repainted that area. And also had a fiddle with what I need to do to get rid of the old green paint. Ended up with a hit of paint stripper, scraper and a wire brush for the most part. Cleaned the rest up with the pressure cleaner. It's elbow grease intensive but is now ready to be bagged and painted.

Just starting on this spot so I can get the gate finished then I'll work my way around the house foundation. Pressure cleaned up that section of driveway too while I had the pressure cleaner out. It came up well and will likely take driveway paint/sealer the same as the garage floor without too much fuss.

I'll gather all the misc materials during the week including paint needed for the gate.

Lot's to do.

GB: keep up the great progress and i'm sure it will be great when it's finished.

The result turned out great but I will not envy you that scrubbing task. One section at a time will get it done.

GB, just a bit at a time, cleaning like that is a big job..

I just have to ask. What is the idea of the hose fitting on the down pipe?

Thanks fellas, yep it's been put off a long time due to not going to be a fun job. Will be one of those ones you just have to chip away at.

HOTRF8 the idea of those flush diverters is that you connect a dripper hose to them and run onto the garden etc. I just blanked the caps off. At some point I'll install some gutter guard, the amount of leaves and **** that comes off my roof surprises me as there are no nearby trees. Must be the birds and the wind. I should flush them out more often than I get to as well.

Starting to warm up, feels like summer is here.

Thanks for stopping by.

 Got it. I have a full cap on my system and often let it go to get rid of dirty water and rubbish off the house roof. I still have to clean the wire mesh tank inlet filters. I did make another like yours to put a hose on but sadly it is not in a prctical location to do much.

HOTFR8, we set up the scour valves using 100mm pipe for just that reason. The amount of dust that comes off your roof is not a good substitute for "Albran", LOL.

Living on a dirt road I often have mud in my rain water tank filters so I know what you are saying. I have even had grass grow in them.

and do your mates give you a hard time about "cultivating grass in the gutter"...LOL

No one has seen me yet. We do have a speed restriction on the road to 20 Kph but that means nothing to many. Most of it grows in the tank inlet filters.
If I was out for a joke I would hide a Tomato plant with no Tomatoes so as when the Police fly over next.

Oops I think we have hijacked the topic - thread. :(

xtremek, I'll bag the brickwork with concrete and paint it. Plan has always been to go double strength on the color that you see on the cladding. The bricks are probably close to 70 years old now (think it was originally built in 1949). Bagging will freshen them up and infill any cracks and chipped corners etc.

Terrick might remember it's mainly black dust we get here out of the steelworks and local coal mining/transport. It's improved a little since the local coke works has shutdown.

HOTFR8 I washed and emptied the tank plastic basket filters the other day before we got that heap of rain on the under house tanks. I still need to do the one on the back outside tank, and flush out all the diverter pipes (I have 6 of those) along with cleaning the filter assembly before it goes into the pump.

Doesn't take much for them all to get full of **** again. Ideally I need to do it every other month.

Also need to get up and give the solar panels a wash off, and might as well do the gutters while I'm at that....

Had tomato on my sandwich I made for lunch :pimpflash

oh and yeah the gate is now waiting for the other "while I'm at it" steps I've inserted to get done :headscrat

so no hijacks, we covered plumbing, painting, rendering, household maintenance, driveway curation and vegetable gardening :lol_hitti

Well done, I remember the coal wash dust. When I lived at the corner of Ellen and Auburn streets, we had 4 truck and dog loads of coal wash to flatten out the back yard. This was great for a house full of car nuts that did not like gardens (at the time). Keeping the cars clean was the hardest thing.

Hey Rick, when did you live at the corner of Ellen and Auburn Sts?

When I had my transport business in Wollongong (2004 till early 2014) we had an early (2004-2006 or so) depot at the corner of West and Auburn (the next block down)..... There's no house at the corner of Ellen and Auburn now though.

Mate, it was at number 40 from1982 to 1985. Barry Weston carpets on one side and a PHG pipe warehouse on the other. 10ft high fences and we all had guard dogs. Perfect for car nuts, No neighbours after hours. We had many long nights working on cars and the odd party or two. About 6 months after I left they tore it down and started to build the shops etc.

Very busy weekend, was at the big box store at opening time on Sat morning to get a few materials to move on with the gate side projects and get started on the driveway tidy up. Lost most of the rest of the day on lawn and misc yard work.

Today installed a TV antenna on a mates new build, got most of the roof work sorted early before it got too hot. Then called out to my parents place and dad helped me run the rest of my old fence pailings through his 15" thicknesser. Managed to save a good few planks of what I took up after trimming off rotted ends and splits. Need some for some xmas projects. Long time readers may recall I've used some of these on several other garden projects.

Only pic of this weekends progress. Can't wait to see how the old redwood planks come up after sanding and linseed oil, some very nice grain in them. They must be 40+ years old at least. The off cut on top is how they looked to start with. I'll post up what they become over the limited time I have left before santa comes :wtf:

The old lumber came up nice and will make great reuse material. Looking forward to your creative use of some recycled materials.

Thats lovely timber GB:thumbup:

As noted above, the wood looks nice.

Thanks fellas.

Do you all have to filter your gutter runoff?

What is a dog load as in 4 trucks and a dog load?

Shorty, no not everyone does. Mainly just those that have water tanks. I'll do some pics of my setup when I get 5, but basically we try to filter out all the leaves and **** that would otherwise go into the tanks. I use my tank water for all outdoor use (gardens/cars etc) and for our laundry. I have about 1700 gallons in the 3 tanks I have here currently.

A truck and dog (trailer) is basically a rigid tipper truck along with a tipping trailer. Trailers vary a lot, but the one in the pic (very common here now) is called a "quad-dog" from having the 4 axles. Seen some new ones lately with 5 axles on the rear trailer. Lyndon had a chart somewhere of all the combinations we have here, when he sneaks in he might be able to post it again.

So Terrick would have had 4 loads from one of these is what he was referring to (although it would have been a smaller trailer)

All, I took Friday off in the anticipation that I would have a day while kids were at school and wifie was at work to get a few xmas projects done. Well that didn't quite work out as it ended up flogging down rain and thunderstorms. So spent all Friday doing household chores ready for xmas before we have friends and family visit. Still better than being in the office.

Storms and more rain forecast for Saturday as well, but they held off until later in the afternoon. We had friends over for lunch and apart from being horribly muggy and steamy I cooked up a Jamie Oliver fish dish on the BBQ. Came up a treat. Couple of Snapper from a local fish shop. Wish I'd caught these myself, but haven't been fishing in a long while now.

View media item 89115
Rest of Saturday was thunderstorms and lots of rain that hung around for hours, normally they blow over pretty quick but this one sat for a good couple of hours.

Today I tried to get back to what I had intended on Friday. If you work out what these are you'll have to keep it under your hat until xmas just in case wifie checks in here.

Steel cut and layed out. I did all the miters by hand with the angle grinder, one day a bloke I know might finish restoring his cold cut saw :headscrat The mesh goes under this frame.

View media item 89111
As always the twins came in handy. I'm going to make a bracket to hang the grinders on while I'm working, and maybe a tool tray or something as I need to keep the tops clear when trying to weld etc. I removed the 4" vise to work today since it was an awkward shape. It was horribly hot and muggy, especially once the sun came over the western side in the afternoon.

View media item 89112
So the metal work is finished now. The mesh does not affix to the frame.

View media item 89113
Started to work on the wood from the old paling fence layout. I'll need to try to get a couple of hours in this week with the saws to get the timber cut and trimmed.

View media item 89114
So that's as far as I got. Quickly did the front lawn and tried to tidy the garage a bit before another round of storms and rain arrived.

Hopefully after xmas I can get back to finishing off all the other projects already started.

Cheers GB. :beer2:
