I will say our bodies aren't getting any younger even though our minds believe we are still 18. The old saying that I'll fell that in the morning doesn't seem to apply to me. It's usually 2 to 3 days from event. Wake up and this or that is killing me then my bad memory has to remember what the hell I did in pass few days to cause it. I find myself talking more Advil theses days and it really works good. I always thought yeah ok ok whatever. I thought about a inversion table myself cause all the jumping in and out of trucks and moving freight that I do it would help. I probably should go see a chiropractor to. I have a deep muscle issue from when I was younger weight lifting. I didn't bulge a disc or slip a disc. They did treat area with heat and electrons pads that would zap the muscles. Couple weeks of treatment and never went back. Every once in a while I'll turn wrong way and get shooting pain in lower right of back as a remember saying Heah jackass I didn't like that lol

Best of luck on your back. Never had that issue but heard it can be painful.

GB missing a welding class, I recon that takes away at least 1/2 a man card:lol_hitti

After 39 years of marriage I have learnt to be very strategic with Mrs 1/2 Cup in those situations where what you see is perfectly ok and her reasoning is just the opposite. So I have learned to predict the unpredictable and use that to get a favorable outcome.

PS mostly anyway.

Mrs 1/2 Cup would say different.:headscrat

Hava good one.

1/2 cup, what would you say the percentages are that you predict the unpredictable with Mrs. 1/2 cup?

GB: sorry I've missed reading and posting on your thread because I enjoy learning the language of you Mates DOWN UNDER. that said I haven't had time yet to start from the beginning of your thread, but saw you are having back pain or issues.

I might be responsible for selling several thousands of those inversion tables because i'm a HUGE FAN of them. if you find a quality one you might still have some ankle pain and dizziness until you work up to 5 minutes a session. don't do longer because my old Chiro said bad on joints and tendons. so I built up to 5 minutes about 8 years ago and have been using one since. I've taken a few weeks and months off even though I had it sitting in the living room (wife barely approved, but because I used it there it stayed for maybe 6 years) and now it's in my little gym in one of the kid's old bedrooms. I've been doing it every day again since last Sept. or October now and some days when I feel like I threw something out like when I moved several 150-200 pound vises or moved some of my 50-90 pound dumbbells I use it 2 or 3 times per day.

not sure if Teeter Ups is Down Under yet, but if you have any questions just ask in this thread or PM me. i'll try to answer or I put up a lot of information on other guy's threads in Free Parking and I think one was called Back Pain and the other maybe Upside Down World.

I haven't taken Advil for 8 or 9 years now except for a toothache and I used to take 100 every 2 to 4 weeks. if you have seen some of the stuff I buy, sell and work on you'll know i'm not just sitting in my chair or at a desk. good luck and the beer should take the edge off until you get to feeling better.

cheers

Oh, and I use a really good muscle relaxant from Do-Terra called Ice Blue. Expensive, but worth it. No side effects like Voltaren (which you have to take with food, or else you'll get ulcers, reflux then - well you know where that goes from my experience).

Have never heard of that one, just had a quick look and the prices are pretty consistent. Can you pm me where you get it from please. Might get some to try.

Hey Gerard, if we were 18 again I think we'd be in a bit more trouble second time round :pimpflash

Drives, thanks for dropping in. You will find that I tinker with lots of things when you do get time to have a full read of the thread.

That's a lot of pills going down there glad you are past that stage. Normally I would just have a bit of an ache if I overdid things, this is the first time it's layed me out so to speak, so will just be a bit more careful in future. I shall have a squiz at the inversion tables (squiz means to have a look at).

Cheers GB.

Hey, funny how you go and sus out these things, I read Drives post and went looking straight away. DW asked what I was looking for, so now she is on Gumtree and has found a few for sale at reasonable prices, $300 and up.

Side note: I moved to Albion Park, 5 doors up from the pub to start my F&T apprenticeship at AIS. Then I moved to the intersection of Auburn and Ellen streets( number 40), just down from Crown street. Hung out down at the sand trap in a blue 55 Chevy 4 door with a 400sb and 10" back wheels and a total Mexicana HQ coupe called Marilyn. That was '80 to '85.
Oh, another thing I found, was that if I reclined my chair back while at the computer, I had to change the angle of the screen so my neck muscles were ok. Just a thought.

Rod, sorry to hear that you are in so much back pain. I must pay more attention when I am posting a response to a thread. I type something and then preview what I had said and then I guess I forget to hit "submit reply". I have noticed that several of the posts that I thought I had made, never showed up in the thread. Need to follow through I guess. Anyway, I thought I had posted asking about what is going on with your back. And you have answered my question even though it wasn't apparently asked. I'm glad to hear that you'll have a squiz at the inversion table. As Drives has said, it may be a godsend to you. I use mine only a couple times a week and it does wonders for pinched nerves. When getting to the point of not being able to stand straight due to "pulling" pain, 3 minutes of hanging on the table allows me to feel almost normal again. Please check it out, it might be one of the best things that you can do to alleviate some of that pain.

Dan, thanks. It's just been a bit sore for the last couple of days, much better again today so just doing basic chores. No more of the nerve pain from last Tues/Wed - that sucked big time.

I think your missing post may have ended up in Mark's (BBchev) thread. :D

Cheers GB.

Rod, that might be true. I probably should follow some advice that was given me and not post after a few beers. It's hard to keep track of what I do after a couple of tinny's.:headscrat

Hopefully it will get better soon. Pain has a way of eating away at your core.

Ha I just looked them up too. Looks compact enough to keep away when not in use. I'll have a good read of the website later tonight.

Albion Park is certainly busy these days if you head south. Took about 40 mins to get back through there from down the coast the other weekend.

Sorry what business was AIS ?

Pop up some photos of your old rides if you have some.

Drives, to "sus" means to inspect/investigate and find out more, but i'm sure you figured that one out.

Cheers GB.

GB and all: If you buy a used inversion table the weak parts are the side supports so try to find one that they are not bent. I'm sure you are all handy enough to replace, but just saying its why I leave mine set up 24/7. Ask questions if you have any or need some help.

I figure ill use mine until I go to that great garage in the sky. Kinda like not taking pills for pain anymore.

See if you can find one to try and if its set up right you should go back and forth with almost zero effort.

Good luck

Hey GB, sorry to hear about your back (I've missed a few posts) - they say that "time heals all wounds", however I find that as I get older they (the aches, pains, "wounds") just seem to accumulate. :(

GB, Australian Iron & Steel, was the main employer around the late 70's to mid 80's. When I started my Fitting & Turning apprenticeship in Jan 80, there were another 250 First years the same as me, yep all first years. We filled up Nth Gong TAFE, Dapto TAFE, Shellharbour TAFE for the three years that followed after that. I left in April 85.
And a pic of my first 55 Chevy, I cant find any pics of the Coupe, it was used to advertise the Woolshed run for the Regency Ramblers.

Drives, I did have a bit of a look-see at the tables and did a bit of reading. The teeter ups you mentioned that is $400'ish US is $700'ish here. Second hand I saw some in the $500 range. I had a physio session yesterday with the TENS device electrode thingy and another go on the traction machine. I had a chat to the physio (she has 20+ years experience) about her thoughts on an inversion table and she said in my case as the injury is down low (L5) then I still need to be getting knees up in order to get the spine flat on the table, if the injury was higher up then you are flatter and would get more from it. She suggested that if I wanted to have a go then try a ply board first on a slight incline such that I can still lift my knees up to get the lower back flat on the board. Interestingly she was talking about how 3D printing now is near making new discs that are the exact match tailored to replace your knackered ones, so that is kind of cool.

Thanks BB, just sore the last few days - that nerve pinching inflammation was the painful bit. Yes it is funny watching the kids do stuff that you have no way of doing yourself anymore. Kids bounce back up. We don't. :bounce:

No truer words spoken. Just pick up a shovel and dig a hole to plant a bush or tree and wonder what you did that caused so much lameness when you wake up the next day. Too bad that inversion tables are so expensive down there. They can be a godsend at times.

Ok "back" to it tonight. Welding course week 4.

Started by catching up on last weeks lesson. Had to weld 4 pieces together in a box form with multi pass fillet welds...

Here are the Argon lines to the work bay that I use. Cool to have plumbed argon and argon/Co2 mix at the ready.

Next up was another box but this time practicing vertical up welds. Started to get there by the 4th corner.

GB: i'm hoping to get a welding set up and learn to weld soon too. it can come in very handy with all the steel stuff I work on. you can't just bolt or tap and screw everything together like I've tried to do for my entire life.

1/2 & GB: is the last welds what they call laying dimes? I've heard that laying dimes is what the best welders do and not sure what that look is other than I guess it doesn't need any grinding.

I picked up this from one of the many welding threads and i'm sure it will apply to me more than either of you or all the members here especially since I own 20 grinders already.

cheers

Great welding practice you're getting in that class. Your welds are looking great. Wishing mine were that good. But, practice makes perfect! Keep it up.

If it were just a "normal" type lameness the next day I don't mind, reminds you that you did a bit and got something done - or at least started. When you can't get out of bed the next morning - you may have overdone it a tad :lol_hitti

You are on to it GB the last vertical up looks great.

Regards

Thank you sir, I should add that between goes I nip out and see the instructor (he's been welding professionally for 30+ years) to seek his tips before doing the next go. PS> didn't get my lamington today, ended up with a very lovely apple butter cake with passionfruit icing for morning tea instead.

Drives, just jump in and have a go, like many have said you don't learn by watching someone else do it. I've heard the term laying a stack of dimes however I am unsure as to which weld type it applies to. Certainly vertical up welds have that appearance.

Have you seen the one "grinding your welds makes you a good grinder not a good welder" ? I googled that to find a pic but found plenty of pics of guys with broken grinder blades lodged through their cheeks instead.

Great welding practice you're getting in that class. Your welds are looking great. Wishing mine were that good. But, practice makes perfect! Keep it up.

RM, yep it's just practice. Having someone you can ask questions to that knows his stuff makes a huge difference. They will just look at your weld and make a suggestion to improve the next go.

Thanks for keeping tabs fellas have a good weekend.

Welding Course Week 5.

This is still the highlight of my week at the moment.

So tonight we did a bit of theory then got into some vee **** welds.

Tacked up some plate (this is all 10mm plate).

View media item 58815
Then got to have a turn on the plasma cutter. Had to cut it in half. This is a cool tool if I've ever seen one - very cool.

View media item 58816
Then tac that back together.

View media item 58817
Then bead weld the first pass. Then crank her up a bit for the "hot" second pass. This pic is after the 2nd.

View media item 58822
Then two top hot runs to finish. So both outside welds are 4 runs.

View media item 58818
View media item 58819
And the penetration through - looks bigger than it is in the photos.

View media item 58820
The middle weld was started with a bead weld then just 2 top passes (so 3 in total on this one) the second pass was a very hot run (turned right up - hence the spatter in the globular/spray arc range) then turned back down a bit for the final top run.

View media item 58821
Wouldn't mind doing this one again but getting there and still lots of fun either way.

Cheers GB :beer2:

Ok GB, keep practicing, that's looking sooo good. How bent are your welding gloves so far. When they start to look like "Steady Eddy" then let me know. That's the sign you have got it made!

You are putting my welds to shame GB, well done.

Nice work GB

Guys, thanks for keeping tabs. No showing off, just an enjoyable course and I figure it may be of interest to others to see what the courses involve.

Still a lot to learn, one of the guys there was doing his advanced course. So that same plate we did last night he was doing also, however he was doing overhead welds and they looked pretty good.

Terrick the gloves are just about shot, still haven't managed to get a new pair yet. Half my problem now is my hand starts to get smokey hot so my welds go a bit wobbly while I'm trying to adjust and keep steady  that transmig 350 pumps out some heat when turned up.

Gerard, if I came to your shop I think I'd get sidetracked playing with your craftsman cabinets :willy_nil

Might do some tidy up in the garage tonight as it's been a bit neglected for the last few weeks and I have just reloaded the fridge with cold ones....and wifie and kiddies have all crashed early

Cheers GB.

Good looking welds!

Welding is a cool thing to learn.
Many times over the years at my work, a weld has been a necessary part of a repair job I've been a part of.

Thanks guys, at some point when I finally get around to doing some vehicle restore/rebuilts (I'm thinking F100 or F150, but Dad's FJ is first one to put back together) I figure some proper welding training will be handy. And also since I've built trailers etc before I want to make sure I'm doing things like that correctly. Especially if I ever help someone else out having some formal type training is good piece of mind.

Thanks for checking in. GB.

Couple of cold ones away tidying up with some tunes playing, figured I'd get through the pile of magazine subscriptions piling up a bit. I don't get to read these as much as I should (I read too much on here!) but they are interesting mags for those into renewable energy and owner building.

Especially if I ever help someone else out having some formal type training is good piece of mind.

Thanks for checking in. GB.

That makes perfect sense. Probably a lot of us "welders" could benefit from a class from a professional. I was shown a lot of things from a neighbor that has spent over 30 years as a welder for Bath Iron Works. https://www.gdbiw.com
I do not consider myself a welder, more of a grinder.

Hi BF. Sorry for the tardiness with my reply. Thanks for dropping in and following along. It's finally cooling off slightly here so will be time to get a few things done (well at least try to anyway).

Thanks again

Cheers GB :beer2:
