Good review on the marker GB. I've always just used a Sharpie but will try one of these. A quick Google check says they are available online and in stores here as well.

Yeah - where the heck did "freckle head" come from? Dan DAN! :eyecrazy:

Can I start using this ? Rolls of the tongue quite well. I often use "Wally brain" a lot for basically the same reason and it's safer to use when the kids are around.

RM, I think we can get sharpies here now but I've never used one. Let us know how you go if you get your hands on a Milwaukee one. I'll have to see if they have other point types, I only have only seen the fine point ones.

GB, A wall like Gerard's would be grand for sure. Any pictures or any Sidchrome boxes? I've never seen any.

Dan, I doubt I would ever be able to replicate Gerard's wall and it certainly would not be my intention. As this is a new line of thought I would have to go and do some research into old cabinets available here to see what was locally made. Maybe with some re-engineering there may be room for a chest or two.

Sometimes that (the red highlighted bits) it's a good thing - ask me how I know....

I think we will get a laugh out of it now Lyndon if you are willing to tell ?

Cheers GB

I did a search on Sidchrome boxes. They look well made. I couldn't find any site that told the cost of any of them. Any links that anyone knows of?

Well my little present from Hare & Forbes arrived this morning

View media item 59777
Also picked up some **** welding clamps.

Hopefully now with these two products I might be able to make up the small custom size tool box for my box trailer I've been wanting to do as I have some left over 1.2 mm sheet from when I did the sides. It will sit on the drawbar to hold all the straps and ropes etc etc.

Cheers GB.

.... So fellas, here is the revised pic as of tonight with the draw closed

ahhhhhh .... much better .. :D

Tidy work area - and is looking good ..

And 4 for 8 bucks - I'm going to find a Gasweld place. But I don't think there's one closer than W/Gong to me..... :dunno:

I was over at Narrabri today, setting up for house foundations. Ducked around to my favourite tool store for a bo-peep and get some new spanners.

Out front was a red ute with Millwaukee plastered all over it.

Bought two of them textas for $4.

... t'is the only Millwaukee gear I can afford .. :D:D

So Im guessing any place selling the red tools ought to have them.

Welding course week 9

Welding course started up again tonight after the two week TAFE (college) break.

Horizontal pad welds. This is the practice before the horizontal **** welds that we had a crack at a few weeks ago when there were only a couple of us that turned up.

Still struggling a bit to get a comfortable stance doing these, so always stopping about half way to readjust position instead of getting in a full run. They did look better than the photos show, but getting there slowly.

Having the new gloves made it much better - not so hot :)

The welding clamps and vice brake look like handy additions to the tool stash, Looking forward to seeing your tool box build.

Thanks hewey, the vise brake was spawned by 1/2 cup. I didn't know about them until he showed his one. Hopefully will have a little "daddy" free time this weekend to start fiddling.

How is the house move going ?

Catching up from last Sunday...

First job was to finish a new nesting box lid on the chicken coop that I replaced the roof on the other weekend...

View media item 59703

Then get the accumulator connected up under the camper trailer so we could go away for a couple of days...(that clear hose will be redone later - forgot to get out the blue hose from in the camper before I'd packed and closed it up!)

View media item 59702

Then clean up this mess a bit...

View media item 59704

To restore some form of order (didn't realise the draw was open there will have to stage the "after" photos better next time )

View media item 59705

I was gonna say WTH.... I gonna take some hint for staging photos after it all clean. Usually, I just post it how it is.

Dlc checking in to see the latest project from GB. I see nothing here. I'll be back and plug a little more if need be. Maybe you didn't get the "Daddy free" time you were hoping for...................Will be back to check soon, hoping to see the latest project.

Hi Dan, still here. I hadn't posted but my long weekend went a bit like this...

Sat. Lawns, edges and yard cleanup. Cleaned out all the stormwater down pipe first flush diverters (these catch all the leaves and debris before going into the water tanks that I use on the laundry and for any non-drinking requirements), moved a stack of pavers for the umteenth time (they were free so will eventually all be used). Around 1630 in the afternoon I got upto starting washing the vehicles before the heavy rain started - it had been threatening all day so I was glad it held off as long as it did but called it a day at that point.

Sun. Off to my youngest brother's new house (approx 50 year old place) to finish off running TV and data points for him, then continued helping with the quick repaint inside and architrave and skirting refit with dad (it had bodged trim and poorly made home made doors that were poorly hung so my brother has been doing a quick tidy up before fully settling in). I suggested to my brother about some ideas setting out his new 22' x 21' (approx) garage but I don't think he "gets" it like we all do here which annoys me as it's a perfect blank canvas that I could have setup quite nicely without spending too much on.

Mon. Beautiful sunny Autumn day. Bit of a late start as I found Terricks thread and read all of that. Once I got going it was outside to get the box trailer and camper trailer washed, aired out the camper trailer to make sure the canvas was fully dry from the previous weeks camping trip, recharged it's battery pack and prepped it ready for next time. Then it was off to the neighbors for a quick bbq lunch, got back and continued tidying up the garage as I still have a pile of clutter donation stuff that I need to get wifie's approval to "dispose" of (which just means you move it around a stack of times before it finally makes it out the door). Cleaned out the chickens brooder box (they are just about ready for permanent outside living in another week or so - and btw it looks like I have one hen, one cockerel, and one quail from those chicks) and got wifie's Camry vacuumed and washed.

I'm on a bit of a push at the moment to get the last of the clutter out of the garage and find alternate storage for the camper trailer and box trailer. The camper is likely to stay at my parents property as there is plenty of room, and my box trailer I'll get a decent cover for and just keep out the back here as I use it quite regularly, this gets the vehicles back in the garage where they are meant to be. The back wall below the shelf with the black storage tubs, I have started looking into the slat wall type product (like denwood has done on his walls) which will really tidy that area up and provide some better mounting options.

Overall it was a busy weekend and there was also the family time in amongst all that too.

So didn't get to the "fun" projects unfortunately...but as JB says you need to keep moving forward...

Thanks for checking in. Cheers Grumblebum

Wow, what a list of jobs completed. You had a busy weekend and must feel accomplished. Great work. After multiple weekends of travel for me and some bad weather mixed in I hope I can claim some similar progress after this coming weekend. As you enter Fall we are finally into Spring time and by the weekend I will need to have the lawn mower serviced and back in action.
Hoping to clean out some in the garage and hand wash vehicles as well after a long winter.

GB, it's it funny after being on GJ that others outside GJ don't get garages and garage set up? It's makes perfect sense to us but others are baffled.

Well, funny that you should mention the parking and storage issue. Why not put a small structure where you are going to park the box trailer and house both.
If you want inspiration then look at this, it was posted on here a couple of days ago.
Talk about thinking outside the box!

It is such a perfect blank canvas too, large double timber framed and clad garage with corrugated iron roof. Plenty of space for 2 vehicles and room at the end and sides for benches, storage etc. oh well maybe he will come round after he gets settled with everything else.

Hey bears, it's not my fault honest. 1/2 cup got one first. Is there such a thing as a tool going viral on GJ ? Maybe this will be the first. If you get a set that will be the 4th I think in the last couple of weeks.

That is a cool setup, man that must have cost a pretty penny though.

No doubt about it GB, there is never a time you could ever say there in nothing to do around the place.

I hear you 1/2 cup, and you have the West Wing to manage too now

I'M BACCCCKKKKKK!!!!! :willy_nil

Good work for the achieved jobs on the LW. As you may know my accomplishments on that weekend involved - a lot of drinking, a lot of 4 knot battling against the current of the mighty Murray, a lot of sleeping, and finally, a lot of drinking (did I mention that already? :dunno:).

We did have a great ANZAC Day at the Echuca celebrations, followed by a great lunch at the Shamrock Hotel (that may or may not have involved some drinking . . . . :eyecrazy:), and some 2 up (you watchers' on - go Google that!).

And we finished the day in exactly the place we started, which was ******* at the Echuca Houseboat jetty get ready to dis-embark at 10am SIR!).

Anyway, hope all is well in your neighbourhood.

Welding course week 10

Last nights welding was a quick run on horizontal fillet welds (sorry no pics), then a go at single and double run vertical up welds.

This pic is just a single run vertical up, but you can see she's a bit glowy red at the top. We actually have a large steel bucket of water that we can cool off jobs in so they are hand-handable to review our welds with the instructor. That bucket had pretty much been on the boil all day we were told just from guys (and girls) cooling off their jobs.

View media item 59978
Also got a snap of one of the cool bending brakes - this one is a bit bigger than the 4" vise brake that I just got

Hopefully I'll be able to do one of the fabrication courses at some point and learn how to use this big sucker perhaps.

View media item 59977
Anyway have a productive weekend, please tell me if you are over welding posts.

I raised the height of my back fence by about 4" - so I was over welding posts by about the 3rd one. :lol_hitti

Just kidding GB, keep them coming.

Haha good one BB. I have to do that to a fence up one side of the backyard shortly also. (Well I've been planning it for 6 years at least - but it's getting closer to being done)

GB: sorry I haven't chimed in for a while, but I for one like ALL your WELDING tutorials and reading and seeing what all of you have to say since i'm hoping to weld on day in the near future.

I never knew there was such a thing as a VISE BREAK either before 1/2 showed one on his thread and I think I have to find one. I saw a different design for sale over here, but I really like the ones you and 1/2 own. tell me have you opened up the box and used it yet? how do you like it and i'm guessing it won't bend much over 1/8 inch thick material or do tell?

your cleaned up shop looks great BTW and the pictures without everything so tidy are ok too.

cheers

Now that's a bender, you should take the opportunity and enroll in the fabrication course. If you do have some projects in mind before you start.

Drives, thanks for keeping tabs on my happenings. As of yet I haven't used the vise break - however today is a rainy Sunday morning so we will see what the day brings (probably after another coffee and a few more thread catch up's :))

I don't think it will do more than 1/8" but it will be enough to form up various brackets and maybe start a crease on other bits that might need hammer persuasion or something to finish off.

Cheers Grumblebum.

PS> still secretly holding out for your own little garage thread to appear in your signature so I only have one place to go to see your cool cabinets and tools and vises and such. (Maybe before those Florida boys come and lighten some of it from you on that big old truck anyway :bounce: )

how did your new vise break work?

cheers and hope you weekend was great like mine has been so far.

PS I got 4 of the 5 oak huge blueprint cabinets set up that are 54 inches wide, 41 inches deep and 16 inches tall and I sold the 5th one so I DON'T have to STORE it or worry about finding a spot for it. if I spent the time to clean these up which I might some day they would look like the one with the glass top because they are made with exactly the same wood. sorry if i'm cluttering up your thread, but making it easy for you this time.

That's a awesome table. I would make a living room table and great display for items in top drawer.

My birthday is coming up so and got my gifts today which is usually cash to use for things needed. I already been instructed that I'm not allow tool boxes. LOL

Lyndon: the glass topped one is just like the 4 I just set up in my storage shed at my home and mine are oak that were painted black. I have not restored mine (yet). not sure exactly what i'm going to put in them either, but I do have a fair amount of stuff.

Taumac: feel free to PM me if you want to know what I sold the black painted one without a top or bottom for and it weren't cheap. if you have a few bucks to spend I bet I can strap one or two on a pallet and have Fastenal ship them to you.

GB: look what I started. sorry to derail your thread a bit and i'll have the boys move posts over to this thread in the vintage tool section where I posted the oak cabinets.

Drives post away, cabinets are very important to ones facility. Those ones you would be able to nicely finish and sell as "artists" cabinets would you not ? Room for paints/brushes and all their bits and bobs...

No vise break playing as yet - but I did take it out of the box and touch it.

Welding course week 11

Started to get a bit tricky tonight...

First up fillet weld vertical section to plate. So angle iron welded to 10mm plate. This would be something one would do building a welding table for example.

Idea is to weld "nicely" into the inside corner and "nicely" around the outside corner without stopping sharp then restarting if that makes sense. We did 3 runs on each.

View media item 60355
View media item 60356
Then we cut it off over at the oxy stations and welded the opposing clean end back on the other side of the 10mm plate...

View media item 60357
View media item 60358
Then the next thing was overhead fillets. Only manged to get one decent'ish photo here, this one is after 3 passes. I'm going to have to get a welders leather jacket (or at least a chap type of thing for my right arm) as the spatter burns straight through the sleeve on the safety shirt I am using and well it makes your weld go wobbly when you suddenly yank your support arm out of the way.

It's kind of cool to now understand some of the tools and welding related garments you always seen in the tool catalogs.

Any of you guys done overhead welding ?

View media item 60359
Our regular instructor is on leave for a couple of weeks. Tonight our instructor is actually a welding inspector - so good to get a bit of a different perspective from him.

Hopefully a couple of small projects in stall for the mothers day weekend and maybe something fun to post too (if the courier delivers it tommorrow - thanks Denwood ;))

Cheers GB.

That looks great to me.

I am no welder but I have welded overhead (notice I didn't say overhead welding) Having a lift is a wonderful thing for many reasons. It is real nice to have when welding over head. It allows you to get away from the splatter mostly. Maybe I'll take a couple of snaps and then you can give me some pointers on how to improve my skills.
