Today we had a fun QFT day. A nearby rail museum/town (Thirlmere) had it’s annual festival of steam weekend, so last night we all stayed up at my brothers place and headed there first thing this morning as he is about 5 mins up the road.

http://www.trainworks.com.au/

Just a few pics on some of what we saw today. We spent 5 hours there and didn't quite get everything in (the kids were pretty much done). Tomorrow is the main festival day with even more stalls, old car shows so next year we might make it a 2 day thing perhaps.

Was chatting to the guy who had just finished this old stationary engine, he's about to start on an old band saw and will have that at a show around mothers day he hopes. This one will chug along all day long. The pulley belt is an inverted timing belt, he said it's getting harder to get the leather ones traditionally used.

This old chev truck was nicely done.

Massive turn table where they can shunt projects into the workbays in that massive workshop in the background. It was full of restoration projects.

We got to go on a steam train ride which was a lot of fun.

Heading back, loco is going backwards. So pic taken at the end of the carriage.

At the turn around point we got off and could watch them move the loco from the front to the back for the return trip. Very cool.

A great day, the facility is fantastic and very family friendly.

Cheers GB.

GB, thanks for sharing your QFT. Are you planning a trip to Lithgow for the Zig-Zag Railway return to service? Web site says they expect it to return to full service early in 2017. We rode it back in 1990 and it was an amazing flashback for me. I was a child when they ran steam locomotives on the Long Island Railroad. Its sounds and smells are unique and unforgettable.

GB, I took the family there before the museum was done up. We also went there for the grand opening a few years ago once the museum was completed. We all enjoyed it. Love looking at all the old trains. We also went on the train ride.

GB, thankyou for sharing.

A day out like that with family is just awesome.

Regards

Easily needs a full day 1/2 cup. We are thinking of an annual family membership so we can call in at any time and slowly get through everything there.

I must look in to that Bob, I didn't know they were fixing it up. I had not been on it prior so could be one to check out.

GB, in the 6 years I lived in Auburn street, I never got a chance (made enough time) to see it. Must plan a day away to get a look in.

It's well worth it Terrick, we'd driven past it a few times now always saying we must go check it out.

Great photos form what must have been a great day out.

Thanks HOTFR8. I think the rains did not hold off today for their main festival day unfortunately. There was meant to be a classic car show on there today also which would have been good I'm sure.

The train ride was great fun Aaron. The soot in my eyes no so much lol.

WOW! Great museum and obviously a very nice day with the family.

Andy, there is a lot contained there in the large shed areas, and the museum section.

Thanks for the train museum pics. We often drive past and comment we should make the time to check it out one day.

Well worth it hewey, you'd get some good pics with your creative eye I dare say. ;)

All, there were a couple of guys from the Eveleigh blacksmith works at the steam day yesterday. I was chatting to them a bit and they actually run courses in the original locomotive works still in Redfern in Sydney.

They had a small furnace with a propane torch similar to what Andy has just been tinkering with on his thread. They had a cool anvil there too. Sorry I didn't get pics as we were going to head back and check out some demos but the kids ran out of steam before then. Anyway I signed up to get some more info on some possible weekend black smithing courses. Could be interesting, the web link below has some info and history about the works.

https://eveleigh.works/eveleigh/

If anyone is interested send me a pm and I'll forward on the info when I receive it.

Cheers GB.

It took me a bit but I finally got through your entire thread GB. Lots of great ideas that I'll keep in mind while putting together my shop  The cut PVC piping for keeping drill bits would have been nice to know 15 years ago in the machine shop! I'm also taking notes on the shop computer setup.

Those courses look AWESOME :rocker: The value looks reasonable too - will have to add them to my present suggestion list for my birthday/christmas

Hewey, I had a bit of a read through their website. I think I would like to start with the hammer making one and maybe go from there. Would be cool to work up to the basic tool kit one and be able to setup a small furnace to tinker with (they just had a 9kg lpg bottle with fire bricks in it at the demo fed from another 9kg swap and go bottle).

dla, thanks very much for taking the time to read through. Always something going on, I still have a number of unstarted/unfinished projects that you may now recall like finishing off the shop slide out bins for example.

I may have to visit Redfern for a few years. What a place!

Andy for sure looks interesting, I'll endeavour to do one of the day courses at some point and report back.

Great photos at the trains!

Thanks Andrew, I think you win photo of the week but with the vette out on the road

All, Monday to Thursday of the week just gone I was off in WA (Western Australia) for work at a a few sites within about 1.5 hours of Perth. Didn't quite sneak in Lyndon's travel luggage. But the weather was not to bad - mid 30's C most days so I think Lyndon will be having a great time there.

I did a few massive days so no photos sorry. Beautiful part of the world once you get out of the city (which does not take long at all).

Managed to get the lawns done on Friday afternoon as with all the rain that happened while I was away there was a good 8" of growth in some sections. Had rain the week prior too so has been too wet to mow anyway.

This morning managed to get the line trimmer that I use with the edger attachment fixed. It wouldn't start last time I tried it a couple weeks ago and I found it had a cracked primer bulb.

So picked up a couple of 5 packs on fleabay for a couple dollars (got both sizes as I didn't know what size I needed).

View media item 68889
New one installed, had to take off a few pieces to get to the screws for the bulb housing.

View media item 68890
Primed up (it's 2 stroke), no leaks even started on the first go.

View media item 68891
Proceeded to do my edges and a neighbours whose had got way out of control also.

Not much else to report today.

Cheers GB.

Primer bulbs were a wonderful invention!! At least when you get aggravated you can KNOW you flooded it!:)

Lol, yep Andy. This unit, a Talon brand which I believe is a Ryobi sideline has actually been pretty good. Only other issue I've ever had with it was the fuel pickup line had broken off so was only picking up fuel when the tank was pretty much full.

Took ages before I found that out - and much aggravation at it not starting. Had purchased the Honda 4 stroke trimmer and all before I found and fixed that issue so hence it became the dedicated edger now.

A new issue that has arrived in it's last 2 uses is the off switch does not turn it off anymore, so I hit it with some choke to stall it. So will need to undo the trigger assembly, I dare say it might just be full of crud or a dodgy wire.

Not much QST today but did mange 1 small item.

A few weeks back I was heading home from visiting my parents place and noticed one of the neighbours had stuck a couple of file cabinets out the front with the rubbish collection. They looked ok on the drive by so I asked my Dad to check them out and grab them if they were ok.

Anyway they were ok. Collected a 3 drawer and a 2 drawer, matching brand and colour. This 3 drawer one sells new for near $300 and around $100 and a bit second hand, so I figure it’s a win whether I use them here or elsewhere in one of my siblings or Dad’s garage. I measured them up the other week and had a think about if I could make them fit.

Brought one home today and have just done a bit of Gerarding. The 3 draw matches the height of my mobile bench pretty much perfectly. The little red chest I had in this spot before I’ve pretty much got emptied at the moment as all the contents got moved into the new drawers I just made.

View media item 68914
The draws are all steel and will be a perfect candidate for insert drawers if needed.

View media item 68915
I’ve just done a test fit with some jack stands and they fit a treat, so will think about best use for them. Probably automotive fluids can have a home.

Cheers GB. :beer2:

It never fails to amaze what people will throw away.

And I think some people I know (not your neighbors, for sure) feel that if they are seen selling used materials they may be in financial trouble (that attitude can get you in financial trouble) so they just throw it away.

In the same vein, I always stoop down to pick up a penny off the ground (good exercise) and I'm never short of pennies. And I've seen young people who are too good to pick up their change at a store.

(Am I ranting again?)

Nice find at the curb. It's a good size that can still be moved around if need be and like you say they are good for storing fluids and bulky items like power tools or the jack stands.

GB, there's one word we all have to learn.... NO!!! LOL, yeah I know I haven't learned that one just yet. I don't blame you because free is good and you can't stand to see feee stuff go to waste like that. Its much easier to say I don't have the cash but when it's FREE well he'll why isn't it in the truck yet. Looking good sir. Getting popcorn to see how this gonna work out. I'm sure it will be great.

All, thanks.

Yep "Gerarded", "Gerarding" are going to be everyday terms now, was it CB or Shorty that started it ? I forgot. Even the man himself has just pulled his shop apart again

I think with a GJ eye, you just see things that others don't. Cabinets and other useful things on the side of the road and all that. Problem is where do you stop and pick or keep driving ?

Old file cabinets I notice a lot I think because I spent some time looking at how they could fit as a cheaper garage storage solution. Not necessarily for myself.

Anyway, here is tonights instalment. I moved the file cabinet up to the fridge end so that I could easily get my mobile bench or the welder out.

View media item 68937
Stuck the top box section of the little red tool chest on top. Only issue with the draws on this are they don't slide right out. Might see if there is an "edit" I can do similar to what you US fellas do on the HF 44's.

View media item 68938
And even used the straight edge to see how it faired up protruding into the garage car area (one day when the cars actually get in here) - right on the boundary

View media item 68939
Aldi had vehicle jack stands there tonight when I called in to grab some groceries on the way home from work. Already had 2 from once before when they had them but when I rebuilt my trailer and did that camper frame I'd also borrowed my dads ones. So grabbed another set. Currently in the bottom cabinet draw.

Might try to get some clutter tidy up done tomorrow night, bit of a mess still after all the drawer reshuffling etc, need to think about best use of the additional storage now.

Thanks for reading, much appreciated.

GB: your shop is looking better every time i check in to see what you've done. those drawers turned out AWESOME and WELL DONE SIR!!

Garage Tetris is what i call it and it's got so bad at my place that i moved different cabinets in a couple months ago and i've yet to fill them up. maybe cause i know there is a better cabinet or solution coming soon. in any case i need to settle on a plan and get my STUFF out of boxes and buckets so i can GET ORGANIZED and find my tools and STUFF. looks like you are doing a great job with yours and calling it Geralding is another good term cause i think he maxed out his space with the WOC and decided there was something better to be had (or maybe Dan's offer was just too good to pass up).

one last thing. i have a $400 per month storage unit full of FREE or ALMOST FREE STUFF so is it really FREE. think about it if you are going to pick up something just because it's FREE. if you can't use it, sell it or pass it on to somebody that can just keep driving. It is sometimes very hard to say NO, but some of us need to more often. EXCEPT maybe ANDY cause he's got more space than all of us combined, but i bet he doesn't get as many chances at some of this stuff that we do that live in the bigger cities.

nice spot for your jack stands!!

cheers

I just hate it when they change labeling and colors so I don't have a matched set when I buy more, as in your jack stands. Sounds like a powder coating job, to me.:rocker:

GB,

Great work as usual. I really enjoy "Garage Tetris" as Drives calls it. I am actually doing it right now on the auto side of my garage tool pegboard. I am even trying to decide on a color to paint it after sifting through many GJ's awesome garages. I just can't decide on a color. A light Machine grey or a light Blue so that all my current Blue would still go with the theme.

That's a great idea for jack stands. Mine currently are just in the corner on the floor.

Man! What I could buy with $400/month!

If I have all this space, why is my shop so crowded?

Anyway, the reason i replied to this post, is we all know why you haven't had the time to organize your garage the last few months.

How are the young couple doing?

Congratulations again!

Its simple in the fact that the WOC wasn't going to fit in future plans. I decided to sell it, I named my price, and Dan agreed to it. Dans really enjoying it and I get enjoyment watching him to it farther.

And I'll add that I believe all parties are very happy with the deal. I've had a lot of fun with the WOC already. Even if it's silly fun at times.

Grumb, I can see why you like lilscorpion's work org thread! I spent a good chunk of time going through that thread. Thanks for the torsion box tips.

From what I see of your shop, you're on the path to similar fame here in your efforts to bring order to chaos. Every time I feel the urge to build a bigger shop, I come to threads like this :)

Drives, thanks. Yes storage is expensive. At $400 a month I guess you need to work out of you are covered out of the “hobby” with the wheeling and dealing that you do rather than being directly out of pocket. If you have access to family or close friends with some land, a shipping container works great for your overflow and long term storage needs.

I’ve seen some of the cabinets you have posted here and there, they look pretty darn good too.

Looking good!

I just hate it when they change labeling and colors so I don't have a matched set when I buy more, as in your jack stands. Sounds like a powder coating job, to me.:rocker:

Andy, yep in the shop they looked the same packaging and everything as the first set, so I naturally assumed they would be the exact same model. Turns out they are slightly different not only in colour/color, but slightly different in design too. I guess a bit of scotch brite and a rattle can bring some uniformity back to them.

GB,

Great work as usual. I really enjoy "Garage Tetris" as Drives calls it. I am actually doing it right now on the auto side of my garage tool pegboard. Bret

Thanks Bret, I have caught up on your thread this morning and you have progressed there since this post. I like that blue you are using, I have a similar shade here and yep my wife too was one of the design consultants on the colour. I am too trying to work out some garage colour options, the melamine cabinet doors are just too “white”.

My jack stands have been in limbo a while now also, they used to be in the bottom of the red cabinet, but I ended up using that for fluids - some of which may now follow into the file cabinet...

When to stop and when to drive on by....? That's a tough question. I guess you don't when you got everything you need? I remember when I didn't drive by anything and there was always something in back of the truck I was bringing home. Now I still keep a eye out for things but that's only if I find something better than I already have.

Gerard, I think it’s easier to stop and pickup if you see something of “value” that you would have held off purchasing yourself otherwise, or like you suggest will be a better fit than something you already have. (I think I just said the same thing twice there).

You are becoming the Alfred E Neuman of the GJ... (right now millennials are googling that name) Sly as a fox...... single handily changing the tool vernacular of our time.... not sure if you are a visionary or Dr. Evil....

Yep we need to get Drives attention back on track post wedding. He’s now been dreaming of Dennis (denwood) doing table dances in his garage on torsion box benches. (you’ll have to read Dennis’s thread to follow that one).

Grumb, I can see why you like lilscorpion's work org thread! I spent a good chunk of time going through that thread. Thanks for the torsion box tips.

Thanks for the kind words Dennis, it’s one of my favourite threads.

Hopefully I can get drawers phase 2 and 3 knocked over and get started on the additional overhead cabinet adjustments/additions. I think then I’ll be pretty happy with the organisation in my “corner” which is 9’ 2” (2800) x 10’ 2” (3100).

I would really like to build a small garden shed to get the mower/trimmers and yard tools into something more appropriate. Just need to get that approved by you know who - but that won’t be until after some other projects are sorted outside. I would really really like to make some room for a small mill, brake and shear - maybe a slightly larger garden shed :dunno:

All,

Have been a bit busy the last few weeks with work and such over to Western Australia for a couple of days and just last week I was back in New Zealand doing some follow up work, hence my tardy updates here. But the other weekend we did manage a little extended long weekend family get away up to Cairns.

Visited one of the local attractions where they do tours in the old army DUKS. There are 12 at this facility which is the largest working collection in the Southern Hemisphere.

Anyway a few pics, couldn’t quite get to the back of one to get a pic of the propeller. Some more info about these ones can be found here:

Also at the tour they had this fella. 5.5 mtr (18’) saltwater croc. He’s 70+ years old. Story with this guy he was starting to cause trouble out in the wild where he was so was brought into the property. They tried a mating program with him but he killed all 12 females they offered him over the years. Think the guide said they tried a 13’th time a few years later with the same result.

Although a mostly sunny day today, ground still a bit too wet for mowing. Spent most of the afternoon getting stuck into detailing wifies car.

Got some more threads to catch up on now.

Cheers GB.

Hey Rod, just checking in on you to see what you've been up to. Looks like you've been busy.

Maybe the croc has gone to the other side and just hasn't come out of the closet yet?????:dunno::lol_hitti:willy_nil
