A truck and dog (trailer) is basically a rigid tipper truck along with a tipping trailer. Trailers vary a lot, but the one in the pic (very common here now) is called a "quad-dog" from having the 4 axles. Seen some new ones lately with 5 axles on the rear trailer. This isn't all of them, but it covers the main categories. Weight capacities vary depending on the class of vehicle and the accreditation status of the operator. They can be operated at GML (General Mass Limits), CML (Concessional Mass Limits) and HML (Higher Mass Limits). There are also special classes of vehicle called PBS (Performance Based Standards), which are the main ones allowed to operate at HML.

Lyndon, yep that is the chart. I've been working for various companies in heavy transport for over 20 years now and the vehicles have come a long way. I've had little to do directly with the vehicles themselves though. Lot's of dollars in some fleets.

Plugging away slowly. Most of the morning was lawns today, took almost 3 passes over the back yard to get it down it was so long. Has been lots of rain I've not been able to cut it.

Showers started again but I pressed on with getting the old fence palings trimmed.

Started with a flush trim bit on the router to get me a straight edge. I used a bit of yellow-tongue flooring offcut as it has a nice factory edge on it (you would call this sub-flooring in the US).

Good to be using some more router bits. This 1/2" flush trim bit was just on the money. After I had one good edge I was able to rip them all 80mm wide on the table saw and produced some nice boards.

Mocked up then trimmed lengths on the mitre saw.

Then sanded with the orbital with 180 and 240 grit. About 3 hours in prep today, always longer than you expect.

Amazing from natural light to LED light what the camera picks up with the color.

I've just put some putty in a couple of blemishes and a couple of old nail holes. I've got a small round over bit that I'll run on all the edges tomorrow to smooth them over so we don't get any hardwood splinters in bums and fingers. Give it a final sand and hit it with some coats of 50/50 mix linseed oil+turps. Hopefully the grain will pop.

Will have to hit the big box store when it opens tomorrow morning early. Need to grab some small cup head bolts and screws to do the fastening.

Thanks Terrick, I think I have just got this one sorted for wifie just in time - update below. As for tourists I haven't ventured out far enough to see how busy the parks are. Hope to get some camping in myself somewhere along the way.

Another busy day but managed to make some progress. Started this morning with the small round over bit in the router to take the sharp corners off. Worked perfectly. A router table would have made a massive time difference from multiple movements of a clamp several times on each piece. (I've got a plan for a router table but that is another project)

Only these two pics today.

After round over and another hit with the orbital sander w/240 grit I got a good coat of 50/50 mix linseed oil and turps. Timber soaked it up pretty quickly and I'm getting the look I was hoping for :thumbup:

This is after a second coat later in the afternoon after all the other fitment and holes drilled for assembly.

The frame is also complete but still hanging on the kids swingset after 2 coats of gloss black rattle can.

64 holes drilled which is really 256 drill movements when you add up the pre drilling and final size for both the timber and steel frame - that took a while.

I might give the timber another quick oiling in the morning before I head to the office. It should be right to bolt up tomorrow night.

Terrick, just an easy day today. Mum did stock us up with the left over roasts that my brother did on the rotisserie, I must see if she packed any trifle into the leftover dishes. Still lucky here on the coast, there is 10 degrees difference forecast between you and I for tomorrow. Hope the new family addition is going well along with DIL's recovery.


All, thanks for stopping by and for the xmas wishes, I hope everyone had some time to reflect on the year with their families.

Here is the nett result of the timber work which was part of wifie's xmas gift.

Gabion seating for the back yard. It's sitting pretty much where it was drawn on wifie's backyard plan. Just need to prepare some paving foundation and perhaps cut a row of mesh off to drop the height a little. Then wifie can pick out what rocks to fill it with.

Love how the color and grain came out. Only thing I'm not a fan of is the galvanized cup head bolts have a damn manufacturer logo on it. I'll be on the lookout for some that are either stainless at a good price or gal but just flat as I had planned. Oh well, can't have everything my way.

GB: great job with the new bench and from my chair those galvanized bolts look pretty nice. once the rocks are in the cage i bet you won't think about changing out the bolts and you'll keep moving on to another project. WELL DONE!!

Router tables may not be all they're cracked up to be. I made mine with too large of a table and while it's nice for small things, long boards like your fence project usually have a bit of a bow and I have difficulty keeping the board down to get a smooth roundover cut so I usually clamp the board to the table and use a hand guided router. :lol_hitti

I guess you'll get your wife's approval on location before filling with rocks...

I like the bench. Are you going to have all the same rocks, or is it going to have different sizes and textures? I expect that will be very heavy filled. Are you going to strip/compact the ground where it's going to be? Having different bands or layers might look interesting, like those sand globes.

Shorty, you are on the money there. I had a look at powder coating kits last night, they are in the $700+ range without powder :(

For now I may just grind off the logo, hit it with some cold gal paint then black spray can. But that will take a good few hours to do.

On the router table I was thinking of making some T-track jigs/fence thingy's such that I could use feather boards to help with that issue. The router table won't be too large as it will be part of a pair of twin plywood carts that also double as assistants for the table and mitre saws. They are going to be called the "helper twins". I need to keep an eye out for a router suitable for that job that has an on/off toggle switch.

The location of the bench has been endorsed :thumbup:. I built it based off wifie's backyard layout design that she did a few weeks back. So basically apart from setting it and filling with rocks - actually she and the kids can do that :) I don't have to edit it.

I do need to add a grate, but that is a job for another day :)

Thanks Driftpin, I am thinking of using river stones that the local landscape supply has, but I'll take wifie to have a look and she can pick. They will range in size but be a minimum 3" on average so as to not fall out of the mesh gabion frame. Pretty much anything that takes your fancy can go in them.

A couple of options are:

River stones.

Yep it will be heavy, it won't be able to be moved once filled. It's very common here to use the gabions (much larger ones) as retaining structures etc.

I'll just cut the grass back there and likely add some pavers underneath. A large chunk of that area there I'll be paving soon to create an outdoor entertaining area anyway.

not sure about GB's backyard but with all the humid weather there are spiders everywhere around here. Record size funnel webs too according to the news ( haven't come across any myself recently). I guess since the whole freakin' country is a spider habitat I guess not too many Aussies think along those lines !! :)
