Andy, I'm with Coolabah mate, everything is a spider habitat at my place. Not sure how to make anything that isn't unless it's air tight.

The kids played a game the other night in the bath... count the baby Huntsman spiders.

They had only appeared that day and we only noticed them on the walls and ceiling once we'd got the kids in the bath. They were about 7-10mm across and we counted over 20 of them.

They're harmless to humans so we weren't too worried but I was still told to get them out of the house. I also had to get the mummy Huntsman out of our bedroom later that night.

Managed to get the whole Huntsman family outside unharmed.

Redbacks are a different matter, they get promptly harmed. No funnelwebs near us thankfully.

GB I like the quarry stone, we have it here and I matches with every thing.

Me too 1/2 Cup, either option will look good, there may be others to look at as well.

River stones will be more challenging but my preference as the result should give more variations in colour.

It will take a little time to set them in the baskets Grizz, but I'm going to hand that project off if you know what I mean :pimpflash

Not to be a Debbie Downer, will the stones be a spider habitat?

Most likely Andy, just part of the territory. I'll periodically just spray it and make sure there are no redbacks. I can lift the seat assembly off and just give it a good hose out as well as it does not mechanically fasten to the cage.

GB, wood looks great. I'm with you on the stainless if not to costly. It'll be forever.
Like the quarry myself.

Happy New Year

Thanks CB, have a great new year. I'll give the timber another light sand and oil now that it's had a few days to absorb.

not sure about GB's backyard but with all the humid weather there are spiders everywhere around here. Record size funnel webs too according to the news ( haven't come across any myself recently). I guess since the whole freakin' country is a spider habitat I guess not too many Aussies think along those lines !! :)

Touch wood coolabah we haven't had any of those buggers here. There have been some big cicada holes though this year and I'm quick to kick them in if I see them. Lots of garden spiders too but they are fine. I just don't like walking into the cobwebs.

The seats are going to look great GB. [emoji106]
I wasn't sure what you were planning with the mesh, I didn't make the connection between it and the boards.

In case I don't get back here, all the best to you and your family for 2019.

Cheers BB, have a great new year.

GB I meant to ask where did you get the mesh frame work from???

1/2 Cup, have a look at permathene.com.au, all aussie made.

Oh, the bench looks great too GB.

Stainless bolts would look nice but (can't believe I'm saying this) I think the gal ones look fine.

TB, spiders can stay outside. The redbacks get promptly nutted if I see them. (luckily not too many here). The chickens like the huntsmans too :)

All, have a happy and safe new year. Thunderstorms here now, we are just visiting neighbours tonight so not travelling too far.

Happy New Years, GB

Here’s to a happy New Years

Kirk, Shorty hope you are off to a good start for the new year.

Small steps tinkering away in the garage, been largely cleaning up and getting some of the kids stuff they have outgrown ready for charity donation.

Cleaned off my 4' mobile bench enough to finally mount my park tool PCS-12 that I picked up a while back. For the price of them you'd think they could get a consistent bolt hole pattern in the bottom. Also mounted my 4" swivel vise that I've had for many years but had yet to mount anywhere. It needs a light clean up but is handy to have.

View media item 89564
Started fixing up this 24" bike for my daughter that my dad picked up from somewhere. It has the shimano nexus 3 speed internal hub so will be better for her when we get out on the bike track.

View media item 89565
After a few hours yesterday and this morning it looks much more presentable. Basically just gave it a good clean and adjusted the brake and nexus gear unit on the rear hub.

View media item 89566
That pile of **** on the benches in the background is the next thing on the list.

Uh Oh, the dreaded Flat Surface Disease (FSD) has struck your benches. But love the even handier mobile bench now and your daughter is going to enjoy the bike.

FSD is everyone's problem, I think. Except for jack Olson.

oops... too late but I now realise I should've got myself vaccinated before reading your threads. Managed to pick up a relapse of acute FSD and also a relapse of chronic CFLTOMTMOSSO ( can't for the life of me throw my old shed stuff out) :)
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure JO was vaccinated as a child ? No other explanation makes sense :lol_hitti

GB: that's maybe another kind of vise I should look for cause as we are getting older taking a bike ride without kids slowing us down or to take care of along the way might be really fun. keep up the good work!!

CoolB: CFLTOMTMOSSO

so once I cure that maybe my FSD will disappear. ARE YOU A DOCTOR cause sounds like a great cure and hope you figure out how to ORGANIZE YOUR STUFF and maybe throw a few things out too.

Benches look fine to me... :headscrat

Happy 19!

I have to agree the dreaded Flat Surface Disease (FSD) has struck downunder….

I certainly have an FSD problem - I may have to get some older cars ('60s and '70s cars have a lot of flat surfaces).

Yep, it seems I've got CFLTOMTMOSSO as well as FSD. [emoji19]

All, I've been slowly getting that bench back in order. Seems I had got to the point of lots of small trays with screws and bolts and **** everywhere again. The evenings in the last week it's just been hot and humid so basically never did any garage work. I'm at least 100 pages behind on Jack's thread so will need catching up on as well. Still working through Don's thread and I'm about 140 pages into that so far.

Did manage to get home a little earlier on Friday afternoon so got the lawns knocked out again just in time for the afternoon thunderstorms to roll in.

I did get into it early am Saturday morning before the sting of the sun arrived. My Hilux was due for it's 315k oil change and tyre rotation that I also do every 5k. Nothing exciting there but I think I have a rear seal change in my future.

View media item 89760
I guess while I'm in there I may as well do the clutch :dunno:

Seems a bit cooler so far this morning, let's see what we can get done.

Packing up christmas is first on the list.

Have a good day.

Over the last week or so I've had the idea of getting my Gerard on and swapping the south and east garage wall around.

(I'll take some updated pics for visual representation soon)

Problem is that having the odd width stuff in front of the cars (for the whole 5 mins they made it back into the garage) it was a bit tight, and if I wanted to use a bench or something at night the cars are in the way.

The east wall will still have the overhead shelf with the black totes on it, but this will run right to the end allowing that to expand to approx 30 totes. Under it the 5 cupboards from the south wall will now go which are only 420 mm deep so don't stick out as far as the benches etc. The french cleat moves to the south wall, but above bench height this time as I can now go to near ceiling height to hang items.

Thus the south wall now has the air compressor, welder, twin steel benches, lawn mower and now vertically hung line trimmers which have been a PITA to store for a long time.

I think this will be a better layout, I'll likely edit my other 4' mobile bench to slot in over the welder or air compressor. (It used to have the welder under it but the bottles have changed to longer and skinnier for the same volume now so it no longer fits with the bottle on the trolley)

View media item 89803
View media item 89804
Now the big possibly-maybe with this is the new found void in the south east corner thay may possibly-maybe fit a milling machine. :headscrat

Anyway I better get some other projects finished.

Woah! You actually parked automobiles in your garage?

In the nearly 19 years we've lived at this house, I've had a running auto in our garage maybe, maybe 2 months. My wife keeps saying she wants to park in the garage one day. I just tell her she will... in the next house.

Lol, BMF I have been trying to get them in the garage again. I think I'm close to at least getting one vehicle back in, will need to rehouse the camper before I can get both in.

All, I am off this week as it's the last full week of the kids school holidays, the weather has been horrible, very hot and humid so we've tried to do a few things in the morning so we can escape the heat the rest of the day. Have had little energy to do much else. Got the lawns at my place done last Friday afternoon, then did my parents property on Saturday on dads zero turn dixie-chopper which took most of the rest of the day along with installing some insulation in their roof (it had been 45C/113F there the day before).

I've mostly got the benches in the garage back in order and have a couple of small indoor type projects for the garage to fiddle with.

One was this idea for a stubbie holder (cooler holder) I've had for a few weeks. Made from some 80 mm PVC pipe (DWV pipe) which is harder to get hold of than you would think. Bunnings have 1 mtr lengths but no caps, so had to goto Reece (plumbing supply outlet) to get the caps.

Worked out the circumference to get the semi-circle size and then the height is just the height of the cooler + a bit to be able to pull it out.

The template is 128 mm x 125 mm high if anyone makes one of their own. I just used a couple of rubber bands to hold it while I marked it with a marker.

View media item 89980
View media item 89981
Then used the vise I mounted the other day to hold it while I cut it with a hand saw. (use an old saw, not your new/good one on PVC). [note to file - keep an eye out for an offset engineers vice]

View media item 89982
Cleaned the edges up a bit with a half-round file then used some PVC cement to glue the bottom cap on. Just used a little cement, so it didn't smear out everywhere. Lightly clamp it for 20 mins or so.

View media item 89987
I had purchased some 80 mm clamps to mount on the wall, but they were a bit wide for the area, so I just put a screw top and bottom.

View media item 89983
And there you go. Not quite beer-o-clock today yet, but will test it out later on.

View media item 89985
I then added a bottle opener, just used some velro tape to stick it on.

View media item 89986
Proceeded to make a second one for my dad's garage as well, they are easy to make.

Cheers GB

I like that. I may use it for something else. I think you should definitely get a mill. And BB, let me know who makes a FSD vaccine. Both my wife and I could use it (she's even worse than I am).

Thanks Kirk, make sure you post up anything you make.

About the only cure I've got is to put stuff away in it's correct spot :dunno:

All, another little project done today.

Finally got the slide out shop bins done.

Used up a few more offcut pieces and made up a full depth pull out unit. I had a set of slides on hand that were earmarked for another project that I hadn't got to yet.

No in progress pics, but all I can say is I still love my table saw and slide compound mitre saw!

View media item 90076
Pretty tight working in this little cupboard but got the slides installed.

View media item 90077
Test fit success

View media item 90078
View media item 90079
Pulled it out, ironed on some edge banding and cleaned it up.

View media item 90080
Had no easy way to work out the door alignment, so I used the handle screw hole to pop a screw in from the front to get me pretty close while I got a clamp on to get some screws in. Worked out ok.

View media item 90081
All done, the bottom shelf has room for some cleaning supplies.

View media item 90082

And the old shop bin can go back to being a bucket.

How big is your garage? It seems like you have mastered efficiency in putting a lot of useful stuff in a relatively small volume of space. I consider a 2 car garage a small space, especially if you plan to eventually park running vehicles in there again.

Real nice GB thats a great use of space.

Thank's 1/2 Cup, I've used it a fair bit already and I'm very happy with it.

BMF, It's not that all that big :(

The main double garage area is 6m wide x 5.8m deep (so that's roughly 19'8" x 19')

My workshop area is 2.7m x 3.1m (9' x 10'2"). I have lots tucked away in that small space.

I do have some under house storage (like a little plant room - but you can't stand up in it) where I keep small misc materials for projects etc - there is just no room for it in the main garage (in the ideal situation anyway when cars are in).

I've updated this drawing that shows the planned garage layout, along with the existing "Grumblebums Corner" layout. I'm close to being able to putting up some updated pics.

Here is a little project I worked on today after getting the lawns in order.

I rescued this cart from a skip near my office a couple of weeks ago. It was sad to see what was just thrown away from a nearby unit, but at least I rescued this. It's a laptop/tablet charging cart. It had no model/brand info anywhere on it but just looking on google similar type units are damn expensive.

View media item 90224
One side has double doors

View media item 90225
And a single door on the other.

View media item 90226
I down graded the casters first and put some 3" ones on. (sorry forgot after pic). This is the before pic, those swivel lock existing casters are 5" fallshaw ones which I don't think area cheap either. The rear tyres said "not for highway use" on the rim.

View media item 90227
The cart became dual purpose. I setup the double door side for vehicle servicing stuff.

View media item 90230
and the single door side became the detailing supplies side.

View media item 90228
Fabbed up bracket from some aluminium angle offcuts to hold the detailing brushes and pop rivited it on.

View media item 90229
It has a good work surface with great handles. It's roughly 2'x 2' and just shy of 4' high. It held my beer without any problems.

View media item 90231
and now I have free space for other stuff as 2 of the last overheads I made are empty

View media item 90233
along with 2 draws of the 3 draw file cabinet (I need to free this up to make room for the new saw and helper carts anyway)

View media item 90234
works great, put it straight to work and got wifie's camry cleaned up. Soooo much better than having everything on the ground to get knocked over etc. Also this way I can see the front of the bottles, when they were in the file cabinet draw you can only see the top. Some of the bottles will thin out a bit as I use up the older stuff that was from my pre-detailing bug days. :lol_hitti

That cart was a great find and looks to work perfectly with your overall storage plans. Good eye you have spotting that one. I bet it's nice to wheel all your detailing supplies out to the car as well.

Nice reuse of the cabinet. Since you have your space pretty much organized, you're welcome to drop by my place to help get our shop organized.

I dig that cart also! I'll have to see if I come across a cart like that around here, as it would be nice to organize the cleaning supplies in a mobile cart instead of in the cabinet.

That's great GB. That cart turned out perfect for you.

Bret

Thanks Bret, it was a good find and it's working well thus far.

BF thanks for dropping by again. It's slowly coming together I think. The brushes are handy, just being able to easily get the dust out of the A/C vents or even just around the stereo head unit makes them worth it.

That cart was a great find and looks to work perfectly with your overall storage plans. Good eye you have spotting that one. I bet it's nice to wheel all your detailing supplies out to the car as well.

RM, I wish I could have saved some more stuff, lots of desks and such went away from the unit that got emptied, but then I had no-where to put it either. With a little effort they could have supplied a school in need with a lot of items.

Wheeling it to the front of the garage has been great for the 2 times I've done it now :)

Great find on the cart.

Thanks shorty.

Nice reuse of the cabinet. Since you have your space pretty much organized, you're welcome to drop by my place to help get our shop organized.

If I ever get to the US xtremek, I'll be sure to plan a visit to your neck of the woods. But you have a mill, so by my standard you have made it. :bounce:

Madison069, thanks. It just seemed to fit all the supplies nicely. All I did was move 1 shelf higher. So much easier taking your supplies to the job instead of walking back into the shop each time.

PS I've started on your thread, that garage space you have is awesome. Totally jealous.

Those storage trolley/carts are awesome!

Thanks Guster, can't believe it was destined for scrap.

GB as above:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks 1/2 Cup.

All, thanks for dropping in. Yep I'm still happy with it. Rolled it to the front of the garage again late this afternoon to start giving the Hilux a detail and a scrub. So much better having everything I need at hand now.

Just been fiddling clearing out some old paperwork today, it's been overcast but very humid after some rain overnight. This morning I pulled the shop fridge out to defrost it as it was getting a tad built up.

Let it drip away for a few hours and got the hose in to pull those big chunks out before they fell of their own accord and damaged something. Cleaned it back up and put it back in service.

That's an industrial pie safe. Big companies can't afford to have their pi go bad.

Hmmm pie. You have lost me with pi though :headscrat - although I did use pi the other week on the cooler holder.

Been a bit busy helping family and friends with a few projects last couple of weekends so not much to report. I did receive an order today though.

I'd been using an old dustpan brush to clean in under the wheel arches etc on the vehicles and as I'm not a fan of losing skin on knuckles I ordered these Vikan (made in Denmark) brushes.

View media item 90517
Used some bolts and hung them on the door with the other detailing brushes.

They look like they will be a good addition, the long handle one for sure should be very handy.

Fiddled around today and updated the wifi from the crappy modem built in variant to some decent ubiquiti ones. I've used ubiquiti a lot over the years for various day job projects and it's pretty much set and forget.

Two access points. Mounted in the ceiling however is my current favorite way to install them. Between them the whole house is now covered with no signal loss.

View media item 90717
Before I could get them mounted I had to chase my cable run that I installed some 9 odd years ago now to make the holes in the noggins larger - was very handy referring to my old framing photos for this.

A few hours later I had the additional cat6 feeds in and run to where they were needed. This one was the garage (lucky I didn't have a cabinet there, nor had painted the wall again yet). Similar hole on in the pantry on the first floor.

View media item 90718
Mounted them as such. (I didn't go back up to take a pick of the cool blue led glow they have)

View media item 90719
So all good now for household coverage. Wifie ran around to all corners (literally) and gave the thumbs up.

This evening started cleaning up tools etc, and this little fella was hiding in the corner. Well he was close to 5" across sitting there. So took him outside quicksmart. I don't mind huntsmans, but they have to stay out of the house.
