Keep plugging away at it, Bill. You are making good progress. We are all pulling for you here.

I feel better every time I take a load of stuff to the local thrift store to donate, knowing I'm not just cleaning up clutter, I might be helping somebody out.

Today isn't over yet but some work done. Got all the misc. handheld toolboxes and the 12 drawer C'man upper into the garage. Took a break and wife brought Chinese home (The food, not a guy). Very hot and humid today with big storms due through 1:00AM.
Didn't clean up the pile in the garage floor, but pulled most of the stuff out of the kitchen door and part of the back hall and just pulled the service cart bodily over it all and into the garage! Sometimes it is good to be big and able to apply brute force!
Put the microwave in the kitchen where it belongs. Now there is actually space in the living room to bring the fridge in off the sidewalk.
This is good as the wife is pushing to be ready to leave on camping trip. She realizes it won't be tomorrow as she would like. But I will strive to wrap things up here asap, as getting out in nature in the National Forest is the one joy in her life of working in a cubicle at Ford. Another part of our overdoing it is that we have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 birds to take with us.
May do some more tonight and take photos after it's more presentable. Will post photos before we go. Then there will be a 10 day break in the thread. Thanks to all who encouraged me so far and gave me back my garage and other parts of the house. Now I want it ALL back!

Recharge those batteries, Bill. Camping gives you lots of time to think and reflect. You can spend some of those hours envisioning the details of your new garage space!

File cabinet is inside now as well. Cleared part of the stair so I don't tumble down it (Hoarders use the stair as extra closet space). Once you start cleaning, it's hard to stop!

Well,
A bunch of things have to happen before we go. But first, I found this for free on CL. Seemed perfect to hold some bulkier tools like drills etc. But I knew I wasn't first in line since it had been on for a little while. So I sent an email with $$$ in the subject line and offered some money for it. That did the trick and I got it for $20. Full extension slides and old school thicker steel. The house was the last one on a peninsula that sticks out into Lake St. Clair. Almost 360 degree view on the water. Guy bought it in the 50's when no one wanted property there. Estate sale up the block got me a UHAUL 2x2 hitch insert with a 2" ball and a 1 1/2" SK combination wrench for $3. Redeemed $44 worth of pop cans. We drink too much. Another bad habit to break
Cabinet is in the garage and I'm gonna fill it later.
Still got to consolidate the 2 lumber piles in the back yard and bring in the fridge and maybe take another pop up trailer out to the property as we go.

^^^ You'll never regret buying that cabinet. They store an incredible amount of "stuff". I picked up 2 cabinets similar to that one from an office liquidation company for $80 each and was happy to pay it. They allowed me to put a LOT of my hardware, supplies, consumables, etc. all in one spot and have saved me a lot of time searching for things.

Good luck with your clean up. You are on the right track.

Progress Report Thur. 25 Aug, 2011:

Put the drawers back in the cabinet and half filled it. Consolidated some of the garage items to get it in and further consolidation by partly filling the cabinet. Went out back and took piece by piece and bundle by bundle of the pile of wood thrown over the side gate, and stacked and covered it on sawhorses in the back yard next to the other pile.
Now I need to move 2 mowers, a grocery cart, a speaker and some pegboard and a C'man table saw to have the back walk and side gate clear. Then I can clean up the back yard, back hall and pile in the garage and put the trash in a dumpster. Then I can bring in the 10 concrete block. Photos tomorrow.

BCZYGAN,

Good Luck to you and your wife in this endeavor to improve the quality of your lives. I, too, struggle with this disorder to some degree. Yes, it has been classed as a disorder and is treatable. There are many resources available to assist you in finding a method that works for you and your wife; you may each have to adopt a different approach to discover your own paths to recovery. What works for one spouse, may not work for the other. One site I will offer you to peruse is:
http://www.ocfoundation.org/hoarding/

P.S. - Hoarding can be simply a symptom, albeit a very visible one, of an underlying root cause. Don't just treat the symptom, look further inward to find a cure.
"Hoarding is a complex disorder that is believed to be associated with 4 underlying characteristics. First there are certain core vulnerabilities including emotional dysregulation in the form of depression or anxiety along with family histories of hoarding and generally high levels of perfectionism. Second, people who hoard appear to have difficulties processing information. In particular, these difficulties appear as problems in attention (including ADHD-like symptoms), memory, categorization, and decision-making. The areas of the brain that control these functions roughly correspond to the brain regions that have been shown to activate differently in people who hoard. Third, people who hoard form intense emotional attachments to a wider variety of objects than do people who don’t hoard. These attachments take the form of attaching human-like qualities to inanimate objects, feeling grief at the prospect of getting rid of objects, and deriving a sense of safety from being surrounded by possessions. Fourth, people who hoard often hold beliefs about the necessity of not wasting objects or losing opportunities that are represented by objects. Additional beliefs about the necessity of saving things to facilitate memory and appreciation of the aesthetic beauty of objects contribute to the problem." (http://www.ocfoundation.org/hoarding/causes.aspx)

P.S.S. - Kudos to you for your willingness to share with GJ members your journey to a better way of living.

That is interesting stuff.

So it seems like professional counseling is probably needed in order to modify one's behavior...Throwing out a bunch of stuff and organizing is like a "purge" for hoarders, so, lacking any treatment, they may just begin hoarding all over again?

I wonder what the success rate is for the folks that have been on the "hoarders" TV series...How many of them were able to change their behaviors permanently?

Hopefully this thread is providing a "group therapy" of sorts and behaviors can be modified on a long-term basis.

Bill, nice haul. The cabinet will definitely help with organization.

Why not sell the pop up trailer rather than taking it to the other property? If I recall correctly, most of the 18 are at the property already.

Just a little OT but not concerning hoarding. Some of the shows they revisit the hoarders but you can't draw a percentile conclusion from it. But I have started watching Animal Hoarders and after the show they revisit the people a few months down the road. I would say from what I have watched that approximately 75% start to go back to it in 7 months albeit not to the degree that they were. If you haven't seen it, interesting show.

Bill...again congrats on the progress being made  It will take time and I think what you are doing has also maybe opened some eyes and helped some others on here. I don't have a lot of stuff around anymore but I went out the other day and started cleaning some items out. After reading that you go to the ReStore I remembered that we have one here in town, so I donated quite a few items to them. But while I was in there I also seen a few needs :willy_nil I may have to go back and buy some industrial throw rugs for the garage

Sat. progress:
More work accomplished and Julie is helping. She picked up bag after bag of trash in the back yard and I dragged them out the back walk and dumped them in dumpsters. Lots of clothes that got wet. I want through the side with a weed whip and cut down all the weeds, ornamental grasses and wild mint. Trimmed up the smoke bush, a low hanging maple and raked out all the berms and planting beds. 5 dumpsters all full right now. Having the back walk partly clear (A narrow path) is making this much easier. Arranged for a neighbor kid to dump and retrieve the dumpsters on trash day for $10. Back yard is much better. but lots still to do. Am in the middle of using the blower to final clean the street and walks. Photos pending.

Bill good to hear you got Julie involved I think it will help if both of you are doing this together and both of you seeing the differance in the house . I hope this builds throughout the house and yard until you have a new to you home to enjoy :D. I am back at it out here myself and hopefully by the end of the weekend I will have some updated pics of my shop to post in my thread :D. I have actually found 95% of my workbench today which is good considering it is moving again and being reconfigured :D.

Rick

Rick,
So cool! I'm envious of people with clean and available work surfaces.
Moved the spare van roof top rack into the back yard. Stored 3 of the full dumpsters out of sight under the blue spruce trees and the other 2 behind the hedge and forsythia plantings along side the house. Used the leaf blower to clean the front yard and around the Airstream. Going down to photo now.

PS, No hurricane here. Perfect weather.

Dear bczygan AKA Grunge Man,
I have been following your post for some time and would like to say that I see some terrific progress. It sounds like you are trying to tackle this on your own and I also commend you for that. And by allowing the people here on the GJ to watch you and place yourself into their accountability. As I have read your blog and viewed your photos I have also admired your courage.
I noticed in a few of your beginning pictures the ceiling appeared to be collapsed? To me that would probably indicate a leak of some sort. I would assume once you have made sufficient progress you will address that issue?
I am not an expert in anything myself. What follows comes out of my heart with what experiences I have had only. The wiser men on this site are probably just encouraging you and quietly praying for you.
It has been incredibly hard for me to view and read your post as my sister was a hoarder for the last part of her life. I am for the most part biting my tongue as I read through what you have written. I actually cleaned out her place twice,(not alone mind you). Once seven years before her death and know finally after her passing. In the seven years in between she managed to fill it back up and then some. It has been nothing but a burden on my family and for others to deal with. I have since then helped three other people clean out their overstuffed houses. One thing I have noticed is that most hoarders are their own worst enemy because they are big time control freaks. They pretty much refuse to accept help from anyone and when they do they get in the way of the ones helping them by holding on to things that they attach memories to. To get people to throw out anything is a major accomplishment and I am pretty sure that you have already come across a found item and secretly stored it somewhere else on your property or house because you just can’t bear to part with it. Never mind that item has little dollar value, it probably represents a better time or certain memory or it was just a really good deal and you are afraid that that really good deal will never present itself again. I think the fact that your place is so stuffed validates the fact that you are a really good deal finder!
If I may suggest? Find yourself an accountability partner. Maybe the Pastor of a church or a fireman that will get in your face if need be. Don’t pick a family member.
My last suggestion is that you find someone to clean it out for you, when you are not there. If they can make money off of what they find, good for them. Maybe you might even have to pay someone? Empty everything out, do your repairs, and start over with what you basically need.
Good Luck and God Bless! Couchmechanic

Couchmechanic,
Control freak? ..........How did you know?
I notice that even with all I am throwing out, I am keeping far more, including little sticks of wood because they have "straight grain" and I could make something out of them. Even pieces of wood from a taken apart futon frame and scrap wooden skis from a ski exercise machine. Still, I did throw away dumpsters worth of ruined clothes, cardboard boxes, some wood that was rotted or too weathered to use and even warped and water damaged pegboard. But even those wood items took some moments of thinking and at first I set them aside to see if I could "Save" a part of them. And I had the expected blowup with my wife because she expected us to leave in the morning and there is still some things to do. She knows now that this is a little bigger than just getting ready to go on a trip. Neighbors have been ready to call the city. I need to make some very noticeable progress on the outside before we go for a week. So if I work real hard for a day or two, we can still go with less fear. Oh, did I tell you guys one of my dogs bit my thumb through to the bone yesterday? Makes this all that much more fun!!! Now for some photos..

Note: A little more progress. I moved the foldable HF trailer behind the fence so it isn't visible from the street except the tongue sticking up. Moved the lathe motor, bed and table down to the side gate in prep to moving them inside the gate. Hitched up the snowmobile trailer to my van so I could clean under where it was parked.

Wish I had some good before photos. Imagine a mass of green spilling over walk and curb and covered with leaves and other tree doody.
First photo is the side street. Starting on the right you see the front of my van, the dining room window with a trailer tarped in front of it, next is the fencing with the side gate between it and the first shed. In front of that is a bird bath and post light and two boulders marking the side entry across the berm with flagstones. Behind the left boulder is a bench in the berm for passersby to sit and rest. In front of the gate is a C;man saw under a silver tarp. Working to the left from the shed is more fencing and another shed. Then fencing to the corner of the lot. Down there is where the van roof rack was leaned against the fence as well as the foldable utility trailer. They are both inside the fence now. Also down there was the lathe bed and motor tarped on a table. They are now at the gate ready to go inside the yard and then to the garage or shop. Last thing on the left is just the tip of the snowmobile trailer and in front of that is the Nissan PU that is for sale. Besides moving stuff inside the fence, the main changes here are the simplifying of the plantings in the beds by weed whip work and raking and edging and cleaning the walk. Next photo shows similar cleanup of berm and sidewalk to the right of the previous photo from the van to the corner.
Next photo is the side sidewalk cleaned up. Following that is a shot of the front walk with the dumpster and fridge that still need taking care of.
The rest are of prettified areas.

A little more reality.
Here's some photos of the back yard.
Looking down the back walk. Under the kayak is a Bridgeport broken down into parts. To the left is a pile of wolm. lumber for a deck on top of enough bundles of shingles to do my roof. Also 2 bicycles and some car top carriers. 4 skylights are on the roof waiting to be installed with 2 more leaning on the house that need to go somewhere. To the right of the gate is a pile of reclaimed Detroit red brick. There is another pile elsewhere in the rear yard.
There is tons of limestone stacked in the yard by the back entry door and along the far fence line. 7 sheds full of building materials and3 more stacks of lumber to build a shop with and various other shop tools like a big three phase compressor, another lathe, 2 motorcycles and another kayak, (all under tarps) complete the rear yard design.
I wonder why it took so long for me to admit to myself and the world that I was a hoarder???
A couple more photos of the back yard is all I can bear to look at and to show you.

But it IS finite. It can be sorted and parts of it used, disposed of, sold, donated etc. There is hope. And a lot more to this story.

Bill those cartop carriers will bring close to $50.00 a pop on craigslist around here :D. I would guess at the rate people are leaving Detroit they would bring decent money up there as well.

Bill,
Huge respect to you for having the courage to show us the mountain that you ARE climbing.
I recently saw a documentary on this very subject and the progress you have made without help is truly amazing.

Enjoy your break and come back with the same frame of mind and it will be done.

The support I get here has made it well worth the exposure. I'm lucky to have been able to take advantage. Without it I doubt I would ever have even started. You guys are the best!

Tomorrow morning, at the wife's suggestion, I will take the snowmobile trailer out to the property. She is buying in to the reality now.

If it doesn't sell by the time we leave, the big Apache will go out there too. That will leave only the small Apache to move when we get back.

This morning I will empty the old fridge in the living room and take it out to the curb for scrappers. Finally bring in the fridge from the walk. Then I will finish sorting and cleaning the back hall and put the back door back on. Then a little work in the back yard and tarp the last stuff there. Push the Airstream back up the drive and bring the last things in from the side gate and we're good to go.
l will be ready to finish packing for the trip.

Keep up the great drive on this project. Just yesterday I was doing some finish work in my garage and was looking for some wood to trim the windows. I have some cherry wood which I purchased in Michigan about 11 years ago for a project. I had several boards left which I have moved to three different houses thinking I would use them one day. Well I though about this thread and said its time to use this wood. I will bet there are not too many garages with american cherry framed windows.. enjoy your vacation .
