I know the DP is a monkey wrench thrown into the work. Makes it more difficult and time consuming. So does taking care of my wife's meals and dogs and cats and birds. Less space to work with, but hey, a couple of weeks ago I would have had to keep it permanently in the van. Now I have a plan to put it in it's proper place. And I'm working that plan in the morning. Raining here. Inside work only. You guys are pushing me. Thanks. I need and appreciate it. Helps keep me going

Bill, good score on the DP but don't get sidetracked by looking for new tools right now.
Empty that garage - more than you already have. I mean empty it so that only the big floor tools are there.
Move the tools chests out of the living area and into the garage. When you do this you'll free up space in the house where you and the wife can relax without being surrounded by stuff.
I've noticed when you referred to the tool chests/boxes you used the term "fill them". Get that term out of your head.
Your wife wanted another house to buy and fill. That's the wrong way to look at things - and you're seeing this - but there are times where you're still falling back into the "fill" thought process.
You really need to part with items that you've picked up. Whether you have a sale or just donate/scrap them, the feeling you'll have when you've cleaned up an area and freed up living space will be well worth the price you paid for those items - even if you just scrap them.
Here's a question: If someone arranged for a roll-off to be at your house to go to the dump, would you use it? The little curb-side cans are one thing, but the amount of stuff you could clear out with a roll-off would really make a dent in your cleaning process.
The trick is that you have to be willing to part with things you previously bought and set aside because you might have a use for it.
If you're willing to make use of a roll-off dumpster (you can fill that, we won't mind
), find out how much it will cost to have one dropped at your place so you can clean up and how much it would cost to have it hauled/dumped.

bless you for doing what your doing. But, I saw you had a drill press already in the garage.{back on page 1 or 2} My SUGGESTION is keep the better of the two and out the other one. How many drill presses can you run at one time anyway? BUT,what ever you do dont give up! Even baby steps are steps!

This, definitely. You're doing great work, just keep at it.
My offer still stands, I'll paypal you some money to help pay for getting a larger trash container brought to your place if you'd like.
You mention debt... From what I've seen, you could easily sell off stuff and get 1/4-1/2 of that debt off your chest, if not more, just from selling multiples (there is no need for more than one lathe or camper). I'm sure you have realized this and just can't bear to part with it yet, but something to keep in mind.
Part of me is immensely impressed that you have made the progress you have. Another part of me (probably the broke college student/amateur mechanic without tools part) is jealous that you have all these made in USA tools that are just sitting there.

Its kind of sad how we justify the things we do, that we know others would question or criticize. Even though I love hearing about somebody getting a 'deal' or some neat tool, I feel that in your case, bczygan, I would just become an enabler to your disorder. Get some help to break the cycle of hoarding from all ends; stop collecting, keep pitching the stuff you're drowning in, and get some outside counseling for both you and your wife.
Sorry if what I say offends you, that is not my intent. I hope you keep posting your progress here on GJ; its just that I think its not enough to get you going in the right direction to make this process a life-changing one. I feel the visible mess of our lives is simply indicative of the mess between our ears!

It's hard! Restarting is even harder. I have to keep restarting. All the posts above are on the money.
Ironic that I was once that broke young man who felt it unfair when a collector of Nikon cameras just let them sit on a shelf unused.

Bill good to hear your still at it . Make sure to post up some pics . They may help motivate you as well being able to see the differance in where you were and where you are in a picture . While staring at whats left still can be a little rough being able to see before and current may be more motivating .

Thanks, I will post pics. Been on a few days of "I can't really do this". Didn't get much of anything done except surfing the net (Another obsession). Went down a couple hours ago and started sorting that big pile of trash in the garage, coughing in the dust as I sorted handful by handful. Got about half done. Can't wait to finish it up as the DP is sitting in the kitchen, just waiting for it's spot.

Keep on keeping on. Most of us live 95% of the time slogging through the tough spots, not sure when we will get that next burst of inspiration. But...ahhh, but those 5% moments when you see your vision of how things can and should be coming true...those are worth it. You have to keep on keeping on through those 95% days. We are all like that. Even though it is just internet support, you have a lot of guys pulling for you here.

DP is in the garage!
Photo shows it with head and table lowered and the garage viewed from the back hall.
Almost all the pile cleaned up and a 3rd dumpster filled.
Floor is red there.........I had forgotten.
Found boxes of taps and tap wrenches in the pile.
Now I see the next steps!
Wife is helping by bringing home dinner,,,,,,but also went to resale shop!!!

Gathered tools for it.
Now I need to clean and organize the garage further so I can do projects involving it...

Seriously.... looking good. Now clean off a spot next to it so you can put a toolbox with the drill bits in it. Then you'll need workbench space with a vice so you can tap metal easier.... ...then....

Bill that is a swet looking old drill press there and it looks like it even came with a nice milling vice which is a double bonus . May I suggest that you finish the garage first and then retire back to the living room to find it .

I do need to clear space on the bench and place things where they need to be. Yes, I'm in for it now! My head is full of ideas for the next steps....This is getting to be real FUN!

That's funny....and instructive. All I have to do is make my shop like his! Seriously, his basement shop was not fancy. Exposed studs and a couple standard florescent lights. But his entire house, yard and shop were pin neat and organized. The DP cord was even neatly coiled and twist tied in 3 places and then stapled to framing in 4 places over to the receptacle. He had a board brush worn down to a nub from cleaning up wood dust at the DP. When we removed the vise he cleaned up wood dust from the table. I need to adopt that mindset. A little OCD wouldn't hurt.

Bill...it's great you are making SOME progress, but you moved one step forward and three steps back. You rewarded yourself by buying something else for cleaning out a small area. Then in the meantime, you are throwing things out and the wife is bringing in. It's a bad cycle that needs to stop if you want to make any headway. Use what you have on hand now. By all rights, you should / could have that garage cleaned out in a day. Three piles, plain and simple, toss and keep and donate. Don't hold it, fondle it, and ponder it. Either toss it or keep it and don't look back or think about it. And the toss pile should be four or five times bigger than the keep pile. You have stuff that you say you might use, or it's good, but you also said that same thing years ago. You found tools that you forgot you had, you have lathes and mills sitting outside. How long have they been out there? And how long have you had them. When you bought them, what were the intentions? To use them or just get them to sit them outside? You have 18 campers and an Airstream. Sell 17 and get one good one. You are obsessed with posessions to the point that you now realize you have a problem and it has gotten to a point that you realize that the problem is now coming between you and your wife. Not a good thing by all means. You have tools stored in the house and house items stored out on a sidewalk. If I remember correctly you stated you had your refridgerator out on the sidewalk and now got it back to where it goes? You seriously should consider the rolloff.
I've preached long enough. Again, I commend you for moving forward with this. I just hope you can tackle the beast.

You are right. The remaining part of the garage work could probably be done in a couple of days of work if nothing else needed to be done. I've got 3 dogs, 2 cats and 2 birds to feed and water and clean up after (Yes, I know, too many...). And when she comes home I fix up dinner and am her companion for the evening. Not saying I shouldn't change that for the duration of the garage cleanup.
It's not just the garage. As I am cleaning and sorting, the things from all the rooms are being migrated to the proper place. Right now I'm taking yard items out of the garage, hall, living and dining rooms and gathering them to put in a shed. Things like leaf blower, weed whip, tree saws, loppers, etc.
I've also decided to remove all the construction items from the garage, so out go tool belts, levels, nails, etc. etc. I'll need to pick a shed for those things.
It looks like there is only reasonable space in the garage for car repair and metal working tools and supplies. I'll have to put woodworking in the big (8x12) shed.
I would like to do something dramatic, but I'm not there yet. I am getting small victories. I know you would all like to see a roll off and a suddenly empty house. I couldn't fill one fast enough. It's only me working a few hours a day at best. I only have 3 of the 5 dumpsters out for pick up today.
I do see that the photo above still shows a very messy garage. It is still my focus. Before I bring in the rest of the metalwork stuff, like the Bridgeport and a lathe, the rest of the woodworking things need to come out and the rest of the "stuff" sorted and organized/disposed of.
Now to the wife....I expressed deep dislike of her continued resale visits. She KNOWS how I feel. Bet she has to find her own way out. I can only be an example.

It has been taken up with the DP purchase, transport and install as well as just NOT doing anything. For me it is an incentive to continue. Perhaps I should have used just cleared space as an incentive, but what fires me up is the idea of a working shop set up and ready to use. So this is a step in that direction. This is going to be a step by step, slow and painful transition. It's heading toward fall now and time is of the essence. I am going to ignore the trailers, and the property they are on, til next spring. I need to deal with this property first. The garage and yard, living, dining and kitchen. I need to keep the good public face of the property I now have and improve it by taking a couple more trailers out to the property and selling or scrapping the Nissan PU. Inside, after making enough room by trash removal and sorting and tossing and putting things where they belong downstairs, I will have the cold days to work the 2 upstairs bedrooms that are stuffed. That's the plan. Am I holding on to too many things still? Undoubtedly. Don't give up on me yet. I'm still struggling. I will not give up.

2. Pull out the 2 rusted metal shelving units and clean that area in garage.

Just a note that while I may not have commented, I'm still checking out yer progress. And I imagine I'm not the only one.
What I'm saying is your support group here has not walked off the job. We're still behind ya, Bill. Keep up the good work.

Bill I have said it before and will say it again . The garage and house didnt get to where they are in a day and I know full well its going to take a long while and alot of work to get it back to the way it was when you started . I have faith that you will keep taking small bites of that elephant . I still say I would stay put in the garage until you have it completely cleared then move into the house and bring " garage items " from the house to the garage . Doing one room at a time will get you there faster than bouncing around from room to room . Thje plus to this is if you get the garage empty then you should have a large staging area to drag stuff out of the house to go through and " toss, donate , sell , keep" . Notice the order I put those in tos is at the beginning and keep is the last option on the list . I put 3 more " double tools " on craigslist last night and have more to put on today myself.

I need all the moral support and suggestions I can get. My wife is inundating me with CL ads and rummage sales....
Got an errand to run in an hour but trash trucks are running right now.
The one room at a time is kind of what I'm doing. The garage isn't the most important room in the house. I could just close the door and ignore it. But since I've started it, getting it to basicly cleaned out would be a big satisfaction and give me incentive to go on to the next ones. I'm gonna stick with it even though other rooms are calling out to me. I have most all the "garage" items already in the garage except the 13 drawer HF roller and a parts washer and the B'port and lathe. Those won't come in until it is cleaned out and ready for them.
And it is turning out that the real rewards are getting useful spaces and clearing out my mind. Although it takes some getting used to, this different way of thinking. It's hard to change ingrained ways of thinking and acting. They are my comfort zone. I retreat into them sometimes. I have to keep comparing my way of thinking and doing against the norms that you all show me so I can push myself in that direction. Not there yet by a long shot.

My wife did it with me, her weight loss,and my big ol' bowl of ice cream,M&M's,and cookies! I lost my junkfooding partner,BUT, I kept my wife!{I eventually lost most of the junk food too!}

Ok Bill I just listed 2 more items on craigslist one of them a HF 5 drawer tool cart I thought I needed but I need space " floor space " more . I would also recomend as you find doubles of things you do the same go right then and put up a CL add and make a few bucks off of it . I will also suggest you take the CL profits and put them away somewhere and dont touch them . When you have found all of your space you have lost then count up the bounty and book a cruise for yourself and SWMBO . Theres an incentive to purge and sell anything you dont need BUUT you dont get the cookie until you have a " nice " place to come back to after the cruise .
I agree with rubber rodder as well make sure you let SWMBO know that she is on the keep pile not the toss or sell " unless you can turn a good profit ".

Could part it out or resell it for a lot more. Luckily the lady who was first in line took it. Would I have bought it. I've got to admit that I would have.

Well, we just finished dinner, so I'm gonna kiss her and go down and do some work.
I did stop on the way home and pick up a couple of free wall and pocket charts to use with the DP for drilling and tapping.

. I know I am just as bad and I even search statewide in Kentucky and Indiana . You already have 18 pop up campers to part out and sell you dont need anymore " you dont need anymore " .Tools I can forgive ( as long as you dont already have 3 of them )
. I do draw the line at another HUGE item that you dont have room for . When she sends you a link to CL just delete it DONT EVEN OPEN IT it will just tempt you to go look and your not a window shopper . You dont just go look you go and drag home .I will tell you if I was closer I would come up and help you by taking one of those southbends home with me
.Post items to sell on CL dont even look at items to buy .
Ok I will get off the soapbox now and sorry if I was a little rough on ya there .
By the way the reason I am selling the HF 5 drawer is it takes up valuable floorspace and currently has one drawer full of files and another small drawer full of **** . I want my floor more than I need it . I already have 2 full craftsman stacks out here and

Ok one more thing before I get off the box . You say you went to look at " yet another pop up " that was a great deal and the first person to look at it took it home .
You have 18 of them drag one home every week heck maybe even 2 of them and if they sell that well list them for $100.00 OBO and get rid of them . $1700.00 would pay for a nice cruise for you and the Mrs. AFTER the house is done.

Yes it did need to be said. I am SO glad it didn't work out. And very disappointed in my own ability to resist. I do have photos of the thing. They take up a lot less space. Maybe I'll just collect photos from now on!

I was just talking about this with my GF, I am starting a photo album of all the neat stuff that I have, that way I can sell it and look back fondly instead of stubbing my toe and screaming at it!
