Hey Bill,

As many are doing, I am watching this thread and not commenting unless I have a piece of the puzzle you can use.

My contribution this time is to explain what you are feeling. Those feelings making you apprehensive or even scared are coming from you not being in your comfort zone. And any change requires some time in that zone. It's hardly ever easy.

On the other hand, when you look at a clean driveway or room - and are determined to keep them that way - you are also outside of your comfort zone. This time, though, you are in new and uncharted territory - happy and proud. And guess what? You're beginning to like that feeling, aren't you? You see results and progress. You want more!

Your progress will require you to spend time in both zones. Like a roller coaster ride, you have to go down to go up - and vice versa.

Attack those nervous and apprehensive feelings head on. Know them and challenge yourself with them. The more you face them, the easier it will get.

Embrace the good feelings. Enjoy them and get yourself used to that feeling so you can keep enjoying them. They are real and you earned them! Go after more!

Right now, the way I see it, you are ahead on points. That margin will increase as you make more progress. One bite at a time...

Bill,

One important thing is that nothing is black-and-white, all-or-nothing. You have to accept some setbacks, and not focus on the negative (as depressive minds tend to) but focus on the progress and the positive and feel good about that. Nothing is ever as bad as we make it out to be in the depressed mind.

You have a long road in front of you, but your willingness to make change and improvement is important. Don't be daunted by the task, but as many others are coaching you on, set small goals, small lists and celebrate those accomplishments. The journey will be far more difficult on your own, but you are making steps to accept - please continue to do so, as it is a sure sign of inner strength for the change you seek.

I'll continue to check in to see your progress and celebrate with you.

All the best.

Bill,

Nice progress on the walkway - the other members here don't understand how much stuff was there - the pictures don't do it justice. Keep plugging away at it. Maybe take the Bridgeport parts to the scrap yard and get a couple of bucks? Maybe place for sale on Craigslist for real cheap to move it out?

I'll be calling in a couple of days and at least coming by on Saturday.
I've been doing some emptying out of my own basement and garage too.

Oh yeah - don't buy anything more stuff!

My wife asked me last night why it was that the people on GJ were able to get me going, when years of nagging by her hadn't worked!

I'm confused. I thought she was the one that wanted to buy another house "to fill". :headscrat

What, exactly, was she referencing with the "nagging" comment:confused:

I don't understand how she could be nagging you to clean up when she wants another house to "fill" with stuff...which will absolutely ruin the structure.

Bill, it's great reading that you're doing good!

In German there is a saying that goes "Kleinvieh macht auch Mist". It essentially means that every step, how little it might be, brings you closer to your destination/goal. I'm sure there is an English equivalent, I just don't remember it.
That's what came to my mind when I read your latest posts. You keep doing your steps and that's a good thing. It'll probably take you less time cleaning everything up than it took you to mess up the house.

I also know about shifting things from one end to the other in the beginning. I had that too. For example: I wanted to clear out the old baby clothes. I sorted everything in 'keep', 'throw away', 'sell'. The 'sell'-pile grew bigger and bigger and I sorted it by size, moved it to another room, found packages to ship it in and then there it was. For months! Then I was so pissed at this huge pile that I just loaded the car and brought everything to a local charity. That felt gooooood! It was gone. One problem solved, just like that.
You will get there too. You will experience the weight being lifted off of your shoulders and everything will come easier to you.

You're on a good track. You do accept help for certain important things like the water problem. You're doing good! Nobody can expect a complete turnaround in just a few weeks, but as long as you keep going and maybe fast forward (accept help) a little at times you'll be fine.

I just found this post today. HOLY ****. I fist have to give credit where it is due. To all the members of GJ that are trying to help. Typing up nearly 700 posts is no joke. Some post are massive in themselves. Bill, please take into consideration how many people, not only give a ****, but are truly trying to help you. This forum has reached another level of awesomeness in my eyes.

Bill,
You and your wife cannot let us down. Take your wife, and get her to read this entire thread. There is a lot here that she needs to see for herself.

Stay serious about this. You are a grown man that let a small addiction turn into a massive Emotional, physical, and financial problem.

Think of it like this. How old are you guys now? Ok, how many years have you been collecting stuff, and not even use it? **** how about being able to even find it?

You need to do something drastic. Taking out a garbage bin out twice a week is not going to cut it. You really need to close your eyes, grab a box, and put it in the dumpster. That's it. Don't open that box, you probably forgot what was in there anyway. If you don't know what you put there, then you might as well not have it at all.

Putting stuff up on CL is a good idea, and a way to get some money, but not at this stage. You are too addicted to buying stuff, or just moving it from one place to the other. CL is also an outlet for you to buy stuff. You need to stay away from that, and concentrate on one task. Get your space back before you trip over some random **** in your way.

You are also losing motivation, as all your work does not seem to net you much progress. I know the feeling. It makes you want to give up. Stop your random efforts. You are doing nothing but moving the dust around. Set a task list. Do not move on to something else unless that task is done.

Here is my suggestion for you. You fill in the blanks, you seem like you have a solid head, and sort of see your situation.

1. You need a "staging area". Somewhere where you can bring stuff to before you dump it. Yes I know I suggested you just start throwing **** out, but I know you will want to go through a lot of it. Hopefully to take pictures and post it on CL. Your garage seems like a good place for "staging/selling". So your fist task it get your garage cleaned out. Keep only the necessary tools. Most of the **** is useless, and in your situation it would be easier to buy the tool/part instead of trying to find it.

2. Get some help. Those on GJ that are offering to come out and help you, let them. Stop being a baby. Face the facts. No one wants to hurt you. Everyone here wants you to succeed. People here want to accomplish the task of putting you on the right track. You are resisting. Notice that people aren't asking you for your belongings, money or anything else. They just want to help, and see progress pics.

I personally want you to make a task list, add something to it every day, but do not move on to some new task until your finish the one you already started. If you try to do everything, you end up doing nothing.

Other than that. I am really proud of the progress you made. You seem to have lost some steam. I hope that is only what it seems like. It will be a sad day if you do not succeed after all this effort. Please keep us posted on your progress. Again, we only want you to get a grip on the situation you are in.

Taking a 2 minute break to wipe off the sweat. One good thing.....I won't need a gym membership:thumbup:

Guys, I was in the doldrums for the last couple weeks, but am now energized by you all. I just threw out 2 laundry baskets of clothes without even looking through them. 4 dumpsters full and working on #5. And #6 available. Racing the rain which is due in a couple hours. Got the Bridgeport ram on the back porch by alternately lifting each wheel on the dolly and shoving wood under. Covered it in case I don't get it in. Covered the table saw. Moved the skylights. Shoveled 3" of mud and clay off the sidewalk where it is cleared. I can see concrete! Tossed 2 bags of empty milk jugs (Why was I saving those?) Well, I used to get water in them. I won't be needing them. Picked up most of the leaf piles. The last few posts have some good ideas. I will respond when the rain comes and I have time. I do read and absorb EVERY post you guys make and consider them carefully. If you take the time to write them I must at least do that.
Need4racin,
Your post was insightful. A LOT of money was spent, and WASTED on much of this junk. We tended to buy used, broken or 2nd rate things that needed repairs we would never make and then treat those possessions with less care than if they were new. In fact, we tend to treat all our possessions badly. And then buy a second or third or fourth to replace what we broke or misplaced. Thank you for the comment. It has value to me, and I am sure, some others.
Back to it.

I think one of the problems you are running into is not getting the support from your wife but you need to keep plugging away and maybe she will see the light. Its really hard for an "addict" to get away from something when the one you love doesn't want to leave with you for trying to work thru that you get a big ATTA BOY!. Now I had an idea don't recall seeing it but there are alot of posts in here, but maybe you and your wife can get some home magazines or something find pictures of what you both like and wish your living area to be. Then cut them out and place them in the appropiate area of the house like a garage workshop for the garage or the room your wife wants for a dressing room hang up a picture of a dressing room she wants in that room. Leave it there as your inspiration of what it could be or could become like just remember not to set the bar to high or you will only dissappoint yourself. I hope you see where im coming from on this good luck and keep up the good work. OH yeah dont buy anything lol

Just because it's going to be rainy on Wednesday and Thursday doesn't mean the work has to stop. Inside sorting and loading trash bags can still happen. Friday through Tuesday are going to be lovely (mid-high 50s), so there's no reason to not make significant progress.

I like the forward trend you're on right now. We can only hope Julie comes along for the ride, too. She'll feel more satisfaction with some personal investment. I hope she's not starting to feel jealous of all of us who are giving some needed support. We're all supporting both of you, but you're the one who made the connection. I was reluctant to post in on my husband's thread (Restored 1930s Auto Shop), but found (after his initial surprise and the surprise of others posting on the thread and after opening our life to the world when someone posted our google-earth coordinates) it was fun and became more of a family endeavor. You can run, but you can't hide, especially when you made the opening move yourself.

Keep up the forward progress.

Hello Bill,

This is my first post here on GJ but I love looking at everyone else's garage, just like you. It's a great way to plan and aspire to make a comfortable, functional workspace. Robert Pirsig wrote in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance that when you're working on a a project, a motorcycle in his case, that "the real cycle you're working on is a cycle called 'yourself'." I like to remember that whenever I get frustrated or lose motivation halfway through a project.

I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement. Keep it up! I have dealt with hoarding in my family and my wife's family so I know it is extremely difficult to change. I know we all have these tendencies to a degree, whether we admit it or not, I think it's hardwired into us as humans. I like to think it's a leftover survival instinct from before the times of solid shelter and easily attainable food. After seeing how the accumulation of "stuff" can affect an entire family, I have learned to curb the instinct in myself and keep it in check. I know it's not that easy for some people though. Just remember the main issue at stake here is your health and your wife's health (both physical and mental), and health should always take priority. Definitely wear those dust masks or respirators when cleaning up!

I'm rooting for you from faraway California. Keep going man, and keep coming back to this site when you need support.

She's not against me cleaning up as long as I don't throw away anything of hers....:lol_hitti
I just used your idea and suggested I need her design for the dressing room. She's OK with it but won't do anything right now. She knows I have bigger fish to fry.

Progress Report:
6 dumpsters full and put out for trash day tomorrow. All leaf piles picked up. Sidewalks and gutters swept by hand (Couldn't get the blower to start). Bridgeport ram partly in the back hall. Bridgeport head ready to go in garage. Torch tanks in the garage. Everything covered for next 2 days of rain (Expecting 3"). Sidewalk dug out (4" of dirt and clay excavated). Very satisfying!

Hey Bill....first and foremost, I want to apologize to you and to the other members of the Board for kind of stepping out of line. It wasn't the proper thing to do. I understand the problems completely and it was not right of me to do that or say what I did. And it doesn't look good for the GJ site either. So again to you and all of the other members, I am giving a very sincere "I'm sorry".

And I'm still right there rootin' for ya. Looks like you kicked it into gear and made some fairly substantial headway. I'll help you out anyway I can across the Internet. If I were in Michigan, I'd be over to your house in a heartbeat helping you out.

Again, my sincere apologies.

This evening Julie took my hand and said she's proud of me. :wtf:

Now I've screwed the pooch..........she'll expect this ALL the time!

FANTASTIC!!!

Again, you all would have to see it to really understand what Bill has done to clear this walkway since I was just there on Saturday. - And then to scrape 3-4 inches of dirt off of the top of the concrete - you've been working hard my friend. Congratulations on the progress.

Same old camper. It's the one we brought back from storage in Ludington. Stupid Detroit driver sideswiped it and kept on going. Bashed in side and smashed marker light and moved it over a foot. Right tire blew on way home. Left just failed (Dry rot). It's going to the property when it gets cold plus another by the side of the house. The one in front is for sale, as will be a number of the others. We won't be creating a museum, and 18 is at least 15 too many.

OH, and I offered that black Nissan PU truck to a neighbor a while back, and today he said he wants it. May be gone in a day or two.

Hi Bill

I just read most of this thread and I want to say you are a very courageous person opening up all of this and doing your best to deal with it. I have both a procrastination and hoarding tendencies. So far I have kept them in check but I have a list of projects and maintenance work that needs to get done. Unfortunately my progress is turtle like. In any event I wanted you to know if there is anything I can do help let me know. Keep up the great work. We are all pulling for you!

Dave

I have been skimming this thread and happened to hone in on your post. I'm in the same boat as you. I came here originally looking for ideas on how to organize my garage. I have hoarding tendencies. I try not to bring things into my house I don't need and I try to get rid of stuff that is just clutter to me. Thank jeebus for charitable donations. It has really helped me get rid of stuff. I would have a hard time throwing away perfectly good stuff, but donating it and getting a tax deduction works for me.

I haven't read this entire thread everything I have read has been extremely supportive. I'm impressed by the members of this forum. I don't think I've even seen a forum without someone being judgmental, argumentative, rude, etc.

Anyway, I am rambling. Off to look for some organization ideas for a single car garage.

Well, I've read about the for 7 pages of this and couldn't help but notice all the talk and no action.

I skipped to the rear of this thread and people still giving advice, quitting giving advice, offer help, etc. Obviously, you got issues, but you don't actually want to fix them.

I was hoping to skip to the back of this thread and see progress. All I see is more talk, no action and you not accepting help. I won't check in again.

You know Trooper we normally accept new guys around here and treat them like family . I will have to admit we do get one from time to time that frankly can go back to wherever they came from . " You meet the criteria " .

I will say again if you cant say something positive or relative STFU.

Howdy from Texas Bill!

I must say, I was quite overwhelmed simply by looking at your pictures and post!

I am the complete opposite of you, I tend to throw things away after buying them and never using them. I am a complete neat freak! I once went to a new buddy's home and after he opened his garage and I seen the mess (not nearly as much stuff as you have) I told him... "We can't be friends and you have a garage that looks like this", the very next morning I was over there and spent the whole day cleaning out his garage! I told him "This is the rule.... if you don't know what it is or if you can't remember the last time it was used we are either going to throw it away or give it to someone that can use it".

I love keeping things neat and orderly and have often told my wife that I think I would enjoy making a living cleaning and organizing people's garages! Yeah, I probably have some sort of mental illness too but in my professional life I don't get to see the results of my work, I think I take a lot of gratification in taking a mess and organizing it into a workable solution!

I can guarantee you this, if you didn't live over 1000 miles away I would be showing up at your place every day until we got everything organized AND I would be giving you a bunch of **** for buying more things before we had what you already have organized and workable!

I applaud your efforts and I urge you to stay strong and continue, I think you will receive much gratification once your project is complete!

Keep up the good work!

Hey Rick,

Hope all is good at your place and all fire damage fixed.

Hey Bill,

Your Grunge Garage thread takes courage and determination. Your work is coming along and persistence will always win in the end. Keep plugging away, baby steps, one at a time, we have your back and know you will be a success. I know when I started organizing I found things I forgot I even had.

Just remember what progress you have already made is very positive and we are here for you guy.

are running water or heat working yet?

[CLIFF NOTES]No, not yet. Bill has been working to gain access to the basement so that can happen. If I'm not mistaken the goal was this comming weekend. As 70Chevy has stated, it is worse than we have imagined, and as he has had 'eyes on' this in person, when he is impressed with the progress, I am as well. [/CLIFF NOTES]
