So bill, I haven't visited this thread in a while. You still sticking at it? I know the outside work is going to come to a halt with the snow and temperatures. Great time to hit the inside good though. So how you coming?

...It is hard to part with these things. They are so very dear to my heart. I am tempted to find space in a shed for them...

Hi Bill,

Last year I bought some stuff on ebay that had the original boxes. I really wanted to keep the boxes even though they had zero utility and I knew they were essentially trash. Then it occurred to me to take digital photos of the boxes. I then threw them out and a year later have zero regrets.

Good point. I have gotten past the keeping of boxes that things come in. When I cleaned out the spare bedroom and found the box the 37" Vizio came in 5 years ago I realized it was too much. Now I just throw out wrapping right away. Julie is freaking out though. I sometimes cut out the SKU, barcode and warranty statement. But a digital photo would probably work for that. In fact, you have given me a new task! I will photo and throw out all of them.
We used to print out manuals from PDF files and put them in binders. We have LOTS of these binders. They include big fat military manuals for our M105 and M416 trailers. It is partly from the old desire to hold printed matter in your hands. But I never use the binders. So out they will go. I will use the digital versions from now on.

Hey Bill,
Just wanted to let you know that you have another person rooting for you. I had family members who were hoarders and it was hard to spend time with them in their home. There was no place to sit down, no place for kids to play, and it was stressful when it came time to make dinner. When they passed away there came the stress of cleaning the house out. I have a bit of hoarding tendencies but being in the military and moving every few years has cured that. :bounce:

Keep working on it!

I have been following this thread from the beginning as a lurker and not posted until now. I have a sobering story for all of you...

My son-in-law is a firefighter in a major metro city. I will tell you straight up...they despise hoarders! True stories here.

First story...smoke spotted coming from the eaves of a house and neighbors call 911. Firefighters arrive on scene, penetrate dwelling and find it filled with dense black smoke and flames. Neighbors are screaming there's a man in the house...they just know he's still there. Firefighters are unable to go more than 5' into any entrance into the house because there is so much "stuff" in the way. The man is a hoarder and the house is packed to the gills, much as the pics I've seen on this thread. Unable to find the occupant or even effectively search for him (even with sophisticated infrared imagers) the firefighters concentrate on extinguishing the blaze. When the fire is out, after an hour's search, they find him...dead. They have been walking on him, covered in debris that he pulled down on himself trying to get out, before they arrived. He apparently died of smoke inhalation, covered in his "prized possessions".

Second story: My son in law, now many years into the profession went charging into a hoarder house with a partner in his early days when still a rookie, upon being told by neighbors that the woman who lived there was at home. They were out to "save a life". There was only a narrow path through a darkened smoke-filled room from the front door to a bedroom hallway. Junk was stacked nearly to the ceiling on both sides. His partner behind him stumbled on an obstacle in his path, bumped the stack of junk, causing it to tumble behind him and suddenly they were trapped in a burning house with no immediate way out. Back up teams were able to get a hose on them and get them safely out. As it turned out, there was no one in the house, despite the neighbors' report.

I will tell you...if you are a hoarder, the chances are excellent that your local fire station knows it...and you are on a list of known "hoarder houses" in their district, as they call them. Their response to a fire in your home will be tempered by this knowledge.

Firefighters are brave, gallant, honorable and professional public servants...but they aren't stupid. Enough said...back to lurking.

Bill, I just stummbled upon your thread, Best of luck to you. I myself have a problem of keeping to much **** around. And as stated FireFighters don't like hoarders. Don't blame them.
I need to start cracking down on my wife also, Seems that everything that comes into this house is " sentimental". And the fact that the mother in law buys pots and pans for us don't make matters any better, and luggage. Wife cooks and when she does it's too much, and we don't travel. So WTH.
Our area in general in the last few years has had alot of people leaving. Leaving good stuff that can be seen on a few pages on here. Abandoned factories, schools, homes, etc. Lots of stuff for cheap, But where to put it?
Oh well best of luck and I will try to follow.

I am here, and have been posting on other threads and avoiding this one. Have been unfocused, so not too much progress. At least, not as much as I should have made.
This makes me feel depressed and is a self defeating spiral where it leads to more inactivity. I need to feel good about whatever progress there is while striving for more.
That said, there are a few things that have been going on.

I have had 3 dentist appointments at the dental school and we are well into the planning of the treatment, The cost for upper and lower partials (Temporary and permanent), scaling, extractions and fillings is 3K. Insurance only covers $1,200. Plus they want to extract 16 teeth!!! I can't afford that and don't want to lose that many teeth! And Julie's is worse. She will need full uppers and lowers. Don't know her cost. And she will lose all her teeth. It's horrible! We are having trouble dealing with it.

On the property tax, we have paid another $1,300 and will have the last $1,300 in time.

Car (Astro Van - Julie's DD) need repair badly. Back brakes, windshield cracked, window motor, sway bar links, trans problems, heater core, A/C, and leaking coolant on drivers side of radiator with every trip. At least my E350 is good to go.

The house has not much progress. I did re-clean the bedroom which had languished a little and needed it. Then, when we had a couple days of relatively warmer weather, I started working outside. I started attacking the ivy.
We have ivy covering portions of the outside of the house. The house is brick. There is 2 kinds of ivy. One is a small leafed type that has small tendrils and never gets very big. The other one is another story. It has big leaves and gets VERY big. The stalks get as big around as your arm. It has grown up my chimney and over the roof. In the back, it covered much of the wall and went around and through the gutter, over the roof and destroyed the fascia board.

I started to clear it off the windows when I cleaned up the bedroom. I went outside and started to clear it off the chimney as far up as I could reach. Then I saw that the 4" thick ropes were wrapped around the basement window frame. So I cut it off with a bow say near ground level and started prying it off the brick with a pry bar. i still have the rest of the chimney to do. I know the part on the roof is contributing to leaking. I will buy, build or borrow some scaffold to do this as I'm afraid of heights and working off a ladder this high is difficult to do when prying.

Then I cleared it off the window in the office that is in the back wall. Yesterday I had a new radio electric meter installed since the old one had quit working and they were estimating the bill (Actual reading will add $400 to our next bill - We'll need to get a payment plan). While it was being installed I noticed the vines were wrapped around the service entrance cables and the meter box. Service entrance is 70 years old and wire is exposed so I am worried about the wet vines shorting it out. Also worried about how to remove it. Started by cutting the vine on one side near the ground and pulling on it. THE WHOLE GUTTER AND PART OF THE FASCIA BOARD CAME LOOSE AND FELL DOWN!!! Some vines held it just above the service drop.
I went up to the bedroom and attached some rope and pulled it up and secured it until I could slide it sideways away from the wires and lower it to the ground. Then I pulled almost all the rest of the vines from in and around the service and meter box. There are now gaping holes where the fascia board is missing and I will need to secure that. But it is better to have all that off the house. I miss the greenery as I love ivy and how it softens the architecture, but it was destroying the house. Also removed was a very large trumpet vine that had also grown into the gutter/fascia. It can always be replanted later. The debris should fill at least 3 big b lack trash cans. I'll work on that today.

Finally, here is a funny thing that happened today that made me want to post here.

I was trudging up the stairs after seeing Julie off to work when I noticed something on a step that had fallen out of one of the boxes on the stair (Yes, they are still there). It was a flyer that said in large print "SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE"! I took it as an omen!

This is a time to count your blessings:
You and your wife a re-addressing the dental care and have what seems like a reasonable cost. I know that having the work done can be stressful, but it is better than what can happen if left alone.

you have one good vehicle

And it seems that you are coming around to the fact that you have to "maintain" a clean area. It is not "re-clean", its just a part of life's chores.

Bill, glad your still here and the walls have not caved in on you. Let me help you, just cut and paste to CL.

For Sale a Classic collection of apache pop-up trailers, a total of 18 of these great campers for one low price of $1300. Also a great Air Stream trailer needs some work $3000. Call now and make an offer..

Bill I say this because each one of those trailers is a project in your mind and is just a road block. You should also trash the Astro van and have your wife drive the E350, you do not need transportation, its just a avenue for you to go out and buy more stuff.
And don't go out and buy a scaffold for this ivy job. Pay a crew $100 to come in and take it out.

Glad your here Bill but you need help, your a smart man but you are wearing blinders and it is just hurting you.

Cost is good. The school charges half of the going rate and then insurance covers between 50 and 80% depending on the item. But the yearly max restricts what can be done. I will use the max and then get the rest done next year, or pay the difference, ending up paying about 50% overall.

Yes, and I want to have less chores, so "Less is more".

Bill, I am terrified of the Dentist. Luckily, I have all but one of My teeth, a wisdom tooth. I can really sympathise with Your reluctance to do the dental work. You have started, finish it.....Julie, also. Your teeth affect Your overall health, AND YOUR SELF ESTEEM. Do this, then get back on the house, dont stop. Press on, You can do it. If I was close enough, I would come over and do the high outside work for You. Get rid of the campers and the Airstream, You can use the money for dental and other URGENT projects. Please dont give up, there are a LOT of people pulling for You.

Bill,

You have several thousand dollars worth of stuff around your homestead and your "offsite" property. Liquidate it. Even in Detroit, if you give a good enough price, someone will come take it away. You've got the time available. Go through and photograph your collection and dump it on c-list or ebay. This will accomplish a lot without really "doing" much. People will come clear your property's for you. They'll give you money for it. Then you can get your teeth fixed and start addressing the "big picture" items.

Bill..

Read this thread several times, seen you make progress and then falter.
My grandmother was like you. When she had to move into with my mother it took 4 of her family members working 8 hours a day 6 days a week a month to clean the place out, and another two months to paint and square the house away to sell.
She was a mother during the great depression, and this was the germ that gave rise to the hoarding. At one time she did what she did to feed her children, then it became habit, then it became a lifestyle, then it controlled her.
As yours has controlled you.
You have made some huge steps towards changing that, Bill.
You need to put your mind in a place that a day or two, or even a week, where you make no headway is no excuse to begin walking backwards.
You have created a huge opportunity for yourself to rejoin the world of people who invite friends over, who are proud to call their house a "home".
Remember, Bill, how hard it was to face what you faced and said, "no, no more"?

Your signature is more real than you know.
You are literally fighting to reclaiming your life.

All the other stuff, the actual "doing" of the thing, is just work. you can do that.

Courage is not when a man who has no fear.
Courage lives in a man who knows fear, and acknowledges it.
Then, walks openly, facing his fear, prepared in mind and spirit, and overcomes his fear.
Every time your mind overcomes fear, you become stronger.

Sam, You are right. Not to threadjack Bills thread. But reading this I see where I get the hoarding of parts. I have been told I am like my Grandpa, and well he was in the Auto Parts business. Well things got handed down. I like in your case have to clean out my Grandparents former home, Now occupied by my Uncles. I am only a third way through this tread and realize I am lucky I am not at the point where Bill is.
My Dad and Step Dad were soldiers, They traveled light. I guess I should have paid more attention to them. As my kids say to me " Dad were calling the pickers" Maybe I should give them my number.

Bill,
I'm mostly a lurker on this forum and have read this thread from the beginning. I'm not what's known as a hoarder but I have at times been called a bit of a packrat. Both of my parents just passed away, Dad last summer and Mom in the fall and I've been cleaning out their house. My dad saved everything, again depression-era mentality. But having to clean out all this stuff, a lot of it absolute trash, has made me rethink what I really need to keep and what I can get rid of in my own house. I don't want my three kids to have to deal with such a big mess.
Just want you to know I'm another one pulling for you and to keep plugging away at it. You'll get there.

I actully have my "little garage" organized. Yet while in the process I noticed a section of my outer wall is rotting. On the outside is a two deep stack of old privacy fence slats stacked against the garage. I figured saving the slats wasn't a good idea as this has already made an area with almost no sunlight even darker and damper.
Lack of gutters and water runoff don't help either.

Finally made it through all 66 pages. I should have my wife read it. Getting rid of stuff is hard even if your not attached to it. Thank God I got into this new mindset of tossing away ****.
I have to go through the house I grew up in within the next six months. I have stuff in the garage, That would be my High School car. Have to move that as well as get rid of a bunch of junk that my Uncle and I have stashed in there for the last 25 yrs.
One thing I see were Bill comes from. I didn't get my packrating was from my parents, It was my Grandpa, and my one Uncle. Going through that garage I can say I like that Grandpa bought Motor Oil on sale. Oil in cans is hard to come by these days.
But since alot of stuff will be ending up in my garage,The questionis where to put it?
I may have the answer, It maybe self storage.

Yesterday I finally had enough. I'm sick of the house itself coming down around my ears. The ivy is all over the chimney and roof and the roof is leaking in a couple of places because of it. I'm scared of heights so I couldn't bear using ladders to get up on the second story roof. So...........
I went out in one of the sheds and found my saws all. Got up in the attic and cut a nice hole in the roof and put a ladder in there.
I now have a nice hatch and easy roof access.
Went out there and stripped the ivy off the inside faces of the chimney and much of the roof. The rest will require me to build some scaffolding with some of the lumber I have. I can see the roof needs stripping and re-shingling. I have the materials. In the spring I will do it.
Today I went into the office and all the boxes I had removed and put in the bedroom for sorting were back in there, unsorted. I'm just moving things around and am sick of it. Even Julie wants it gone. Looked around at all the stuff and most all of it was NOT things I want. NOT things I see in the finished room.
Big trash pickup across the street in a couple days. I am pulling it all out right now.
This cannot stand!

Push hard Bill, keep this fight up! A hatch in the roof! That made me think of you as a pirate poking your head out of the roof with a big sword.

Get going buddy you can do this, don't settle for anything less.

If your making a step forward, I might be making one too in the next two weeks by getting rid of a car, and finding the parts I bought that never made it on there and putting them up on craigslist. My house and the garage are getting too crowded. One person can only deal with so much stuff.

reddog289,
You are dealing with some of the same issues I am. You have my full support and that of the people here on the forum. Keep going. Show us before and after photos here in this thread to show how it's going. You can do it!
