No one is claiming nothing goes wrong but often the protection is interwoven. What you tried to prevent occurred from additional equipment you added??? Is this not true? You put it back to the way it was and now it works? Its that simple.
How much did this device that almost ruined your property cost?
This product which is probably a cap in a case that cost a couple bucks to make belongs right up there with the wiring harness that combines to circuits for 240V and the 30 to 15 adapter. Not proven safe. For giggles I looked it up, not a single listing, 2 testimonials claiming to be customers and not even sure if the data sheets worked etc.
It was probably meant to be harmless, about like adding a crappy surge suppressor might be but obviously there was a fault.
Not sure how one could not connect the logic here and claim because there is other faulty equipment in the world that it made it a genius idea to install some gizmo 10x miracle pos no one else has thought of till these wonders came along?

May all the systems or products that you have anything to do with always
work as they should.
I want to reach in and find the missing link here.
We actually do a fair amount of work to try to do that. As I said, I have backtracked where practical and un did some work, tossed some out. We repair a ton of stuff. I am cautious about repairing even common equipment, pretty quick someone went around a thermal limit etc.

In all my work experience, probably my most important task was designing
fail safe modes for operator errors.
Though most products/systems work like they should, I have personally had to deal with many that just left me scratching my head, wondering "what were they thinking".

Back to the subject at hand, I have seen a number of well pump switch contacts that have arced to the point of welding shut. The typical well pump control is far from foolproof or fail safe, as the post below reveals.

Sounds like the system was engineered correctly. The relief device prevented over-pressurization of the system, and was even correctly directed outside to prevent property damage due to flooding.
