It all started with these two hammers from TOR.
I bought them new 30 years ago.
Since then I have replaced the handle twice on the cross pein.
The ball pein still have the original handle.
But the head is repainted and I have reshaped the chamfer around the face.
Nowadays I have a few more hammers.

The partial markings are Vaughn, good hammer!

The one without is anyone's guess. :dunno: The pattern is different that most BP's. Most BP's have either a style similar to the Vaughn, or one where the side panel is a fairly distinct circle, and the spaces between the side and faces are pretty distinct, and often hex or octagonal.

That second one has smooth transitioning from the peen and faces to the main body.

Get the rest of the rust off and see what, if anything, comes up.

A nice 6 kg blacksmith sledge made for the swedish army.
Made by Forsbacka in 1946.
English pattern straight pein.
In the background, the original handle. I have taken away the green paint and will use it again with a new wedge.

I'm thinking the claw hammer head may be a specialized cobbler hammer for getting into corners where the typical cobbler's H. cant fit.

No clue on the Pointy one. Did you get them from the same place? were there leather working tools in the mix? :dunno:

My bad Gerard.

I didn't even notice the 74 in the side until I looked really really closely just now. I didn't even catch them the first glance.

The opposite side of the hammer from the Vaughan logo should have a part no. Some do not.

The 74 on your hammer are owner marks or tool crib/inventory marks I;m guessing.
Likely put on there using number punches.

Any idea of size?
16oz? 24oz? 28oz? 32oz?

The old standard read like this (I took a WAG on 8):

2 oz = 7/0
4 oz = 5/0
6 oz = 4/0
8 oz = 3/0
12 oz = 2/0
16 oz = 0
20 oz = 1
24 oz = 2
28 oz = 3
32 oz = 4
40 oz = 6
48 oz = 8?

the claw hammer came from the family farm which we've owned
for over a hundred years.

To me, the claw hammer looks like a well done, hand made, yet mass produced hammer.

The second one looks like a coal hammer, for breaking up lumps.

I've been wrong before.

Yea..but.

MY *7A is definately not a 32oz' er.

(I;ve got too many to compare it too. Thank you for that. I REALLY need to stop this hammer fetish . Srsly. LOLZ>)

My *7A is way too big for 16oz.

Thus 24oz or 28 oz, but it needs a 14" handle to fill the hole, thus we're back to 24 or 28 oz.

Gerard 's *8A? I dunno?

Thus my guess at 32oz.

I wish I had a Vaughan chart. That would solve EVERYTHING.

Vaughan coding is an enigma wrapped in a mystery clouded by mysticism.

Or best I can tell.

But that's just me.

LOLOLOLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

:)

Sorry got no clue on the first three... :dunno:

The Champion DeArment, and CL are the same company. Champion DeArment renamed itself after it's flagship product, so the Champion DeArment is old!

1963 was the rename so at least 50 years old, but could be older.

Funny, I just saw a Channellock (Champion DeARMENT Tool Company) catalog on Ebay with Champion hammers. That catalog was 1957.

Fairmount USA , Cleveland, OH got done last nite. 28 or 32oz.
Whoo Hoo!
Likely a trade or onto the GJ classifieds or ebay.

I really really really wanted a 14" handle on it, but, nope. 12" it is.
I worked that 14" handle but no way it would of held up.
I think body hammer co.'s did small head holes, thus the problem.

24 28oz. Vaughan on deck. 16" handle is too long, so it will be reshaped.

Damn you Link and handle sellers.
