They had something similar back in the mid 70's. They also had a silver base coat you used under it.

I used to paint all my tools that I took to the track with the blue, so I would know at a glance who had my tools. I liked that is was translucent as it didn't cover any other markings...

Glad to see its back!

The reason I chose it was so that the markings would show through and would give it a more professional appearance than just primer and paint.

As promised, here's another pic of my Atha Hammer... It's a 4lb...

Also I took a couple more pics of the ball peen... From what I can read on the head, it looks like.... xxxxDE TOOL CO Which I can only figure to be Wilde? But did they use the Anvil logo ever?

EDIT - Okay, only company I could find that used the anvil logo was Champion DeArment Tool Co... (Aka Channellock)... They also did make ball peen hammers back in the day...

I can see *maybe* champion would fit... But then it could only say, "Champion De Tool Co" ??? :(

So I've picked up a few hammers lately including my new Crown Jewel, Proto 1340 a 40oz Ball Peen! It had a loose handle and was all rusty had to fork over $1 for that bad boy. The others were picked up in lots of other stuff for very cheap and include 2 Proto 1430 24oz Brass Hammers one has been cut down so now is probably only 16oz. A 16oz plumb Ball and a 48oz shorty brass hammer complete with fancy green patina (no extra charge). Overall I was very happy with all of these purchases. dc2f5784818730d952e9e280fb736fb4.jpg

Here is one I picked up almost a month ago. a Plvmb 1422 Planishing hammer. possibly the smallest, lightest body" hammer I have now.

About 5 oz, the flat face is 1" and its span is 4". - Pretty small!

I'm keeping this one handy on my small in-the-house workbench.

It whitish band was adhesive tape. possibly put there as a way to hang it? :dunno: That has since been cut off...

Beautiful work.

Metric drawbar? Did you TIG the handle together?

Round column mill (Taiwan). I used 3/8" SS rod, TIG 6pcs 4" long around the center rod and chamfer in the lathe. Drill 3/8" thru socket/brass and weld the tip.

Before they made pliers and changed their name to Channellock, Champion DeArment Tool Company made some of the best hammers in the country for blacksmith, farriers, machinists, etc. They used an anvil on their logo and also made anvil hardy tools (cutters, etc.). I pick up Champion hammers whenever I can find them. You got a good one there!

That is a most annoying GIF!

One I picked up last weekend in a "Dollar" tools box (whole box of "stuff" for a buck) - It's kind of funky with that bead ion the side, and I suspect it's pretty old. No indication of brand...

And another I found in a tub cleaning my shop: It's a Fulton "Utility" and is definitely old!

I discovered an estate sale today by accident. It was mid-day and it had been picked over, but I checked it out. I saw an old, beat-up cross pein hammer, and thought that it was cheap enough ($5.00) to be a user. It's about 2 pounds, so it would be good for light forming.

I saw that it had letters stamped in the head, on top, bottom, and both sides. The letters ended in RR, so I thought it might have come from a railroad. After I got it home, I read C&STLRR, with the T having a gap in the vertical line. The T with the S in front of it probably meant St., so I was thinking C&St.L RR. Research didn't show up any viable matches, and I looked it over again. On the top I could make out a faint P in front of the C, making it PC&STLRR. This matches the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and St. Louis Railway, which is first mentioned in the late 1860's and merged with the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway in 1890.

That makes this hammer pretty old, and I believe it earned it's bumps and bruises. Notice the 1/2 pound of nails substituting for a wedge in the head end of the handle!

By the way, in some photos the head looks polished around the lettering. It isn't, I scraped the dirt and rust out of the letters, and used a quick wipe of oil to make the letters stand out.

Interesting find on the RR hammer, I have a big old square hammer that has NYRR (New York Rail Road) stamped on the side. I imagine that its pretty worthless as both sides are mushroomed and one is badly misshapen.

Replaced the handle on this Craftsman 4lb head. It was just a spare used handle I had that was nicked and scratched up but no splits or chunks missing.

After putting the handle on I looked at it and figured I would give it a light sanding and stain/poly it a little darker. I really like how it turned out.

Nice job Jason. have you tried fire hardening the handle to get the darker shade? I've done one and while it takes a bit of finesse, I'm going to keep trying...

I like the hammer rack! lot of hammers in a small space!

I'm fond of a Heller claw hammer I got from another GJer. The wood handle was a tad loose, but driving the metal wedge in a bit further, then soaking the head in BLO firmed it up nicely.

I haven't done it with a hammer handle, but I've used a torch on other pieces of wood to darken them and bring out the grain. Yes it can be a challenge to get it an even shade and not burn the wood.

Thanks for the comment on the rack, it was actually quite easy to make and so much better than my previous storage method for my hammers. Before I had them on pegboard and they would be on hangers 3-4 deep (or more). So depending on which I needed I would have to pull several down and try not to knock anything else down in the process. This rack I just screwed onto the end of my workbench and now I have easy access to them all.

that could work for a set of, say, ball peens using broomsticks mounted so it tapers. Hmmm

I have a board with a pair of wood dowels for each hammer and that is two or three deep depending on the size... It was planned for "one each"...

There is new home construction around here so I used a piece of wood rod that was for hanging clothes in the closet.

For spacing I just took some of my hammers with larger handles and figured out how wide it needed to be for the handles to go through without having an excessive gap or so narrow they would have to be turned sideways.

From my smallest tack hammer to my largest mini-sledge they all sit on the rack just fine.

I can't take credit, I was inspired by another member that made some racks out of steel. I just didn't have any metal or a large enough place to build similar to his.

Putting it on the end of my workbench has been superb though as I've always had a trashcan on the end (you can see in the picture) so it was kind of dead space anyhow. This is also an easy-to-reach location for when I'm working on something.

I just made a couple pocket holes in each of the 2x6's and that seems more than adequate to hold the weight. One of these days I need to pull it off so I can stain/poly it to match the bench. I might add glue to the joint when I re-install.
