Saturday I checked out a couple of sales on the way home. I did find this 6 lb. hand sledge at the last sale. The handle needs some help, but I believe I can save it.

The H in a shield trademark seems to be the same as the Charles E. Hall Company, of Buffalo, N.Y., which was acquired by Barcalo in 1914. The company was known for making wrenches (according to an ad referenced by Alloy Artifacts) but I can find no mention of striking tools.

I am coming up short on information on the Charles E. Hall company. Does anyone know more?

UPDATE: It appears to be a Hubbard Nevada Pattern Striking Hammer.

I know your daughter is a rabid Tolkien fan. I don't know if she (and/or you) are watching Season 1 of "The Rings of Power", streaming now on Amazon Prime. The producers are promoting the series as a prequel, "loosely based on the appendices to the trilogy," which is a real stretch, but almost certainly to avoid having to make a better and more direct reference to Part III of "The Silmarillion", which describes in great detail what the series is chronicling. I am watching with my son. Anyway, I thought of her, and you, last night. Near the end of the last episode, when Celebrimbor, the master elf-smith and his apprentices are preparing to forge the rings of power, there's a scene showing his workshop where the camera pans quickly over these hammers. A nice intersection of your daughter's interests and yours.

That's a lot of hammers Ric!

I was at an Estate sale yesterday and "got hammered"

LOTS of body/metal working hammers and I left some, but I cherry picked these out, two have USMC and "51" stamped in them:

E1 B hammers.jpg

Plus 4 Long C craftsman body hammers - the handles are marked "Fender Tools" in the underline:

E2 Long C.jpg

E2 Long Ca.jpg

Then a box full of 19 handles - most are NOS:

E3 Handles.jpg

And hiding under the handles: (found these after I got home) a trove of heads needing handles:

010.JPG

Eight of them - One is marked Dunlap - if the others are marked, they need de-rusted to find them - The flat sided BP I like and am going to clean up, haft it and put into use.:

E3 Handles-hidden2.jpg

A small sheet metal hammer (3 oz?) surfaced elsewhere in the garage the OD paint may be original:

Sheet Metal hammer.jpg

And from a FM prior to the Estate Sale a nesting Driver Hammer, technically its a hammer!
Marked GAM on both the top of the head, and inscribed in the brass - Complete and no Effed up driver blades, including the largest inside the hammer shank.

@Lugs:

I noted the "Horn Hammer" in the pic you posted - I have a small one, but I like the one you posted better:

Horn Hammer.jpg

Also some details on the "Donkey **** from above - It has some markings; this is one that had the USMC 51 on it:

DD Hammer 51.jpg

The other markings are factory - H. J. Hamlet, and a 1 and a 3: - - they are still in business

DD Hammer H.J. Ham.jpg

Completely straight, 9-1/2 " long, about 2-1/2 lbs.

Here's my hammer boxes and some that don't fit. Don't use many hammers really other than to knock something loose or drive something out(first drawer is most of my chisels and punches) so I don't have much other than what I've accumulated accidentally.

Third drawer, basically 50/50 cheap new stuff(deadblows and fiberglass drilling hammers) and good old stuff.
PXL_20221127_013641315.jpg
Second drawer is non marring stuff. Rawhides, rubber, and a few brass.
PXL_20221127_013623562.jpg
This box is framing hammers and rock hammers, mainly cheap stuff.
PXL_20221127_013900096.jpg
A few hammers that don't fit, 8lb and 14lb sledges, plus two out of the box I like(32 oz short handle and Ampco brass).
PXL_20221127_013731284.jpg
Then two hammers that aren't in the box but aren't going to see much/any use. WW2 double bell brass hammer from an Enfield armorer's kit and a plomb body hammer that still has a polished finish on the cross peen and fair finish on the front.
PXL_20221127_014037904.jpg
I have more in storage. Basically just a 14lb straight peen(no handle), 6lb rail hammer, 14lb rock hammer(no handle, straight peen used for railroad work back in the first half of the 1900s), 8 inch diameter beetle(no handle, rings were pressed on but handle hole was just started before it was left to cure and abandoned). Also a few small ball peens, 4lb and 8lb sledges that need new handles.

I made up some diagonal pein blacksmith hammers:

The top and bottom were supposed to be a pair but with the diagonal pein facing opposite angles when mounted. Unfortunately the top one weighs aprox 28 oz. and the bottom one weighs aprox 35 oz. so they're not a perfect pair. The other end of these 2 hammers is a "Rounding" hammer head. Rounding hammers spread the red hot metal 360' from the point of impact.

HammersBlkSmSM_2375.jpg

The diagonal peins spread the metal either north/south of east/west with each blow depending on which way the angle goes. A cross pein or straight pein do the same but the diagonal pein is easier to hit the correct angle of your work with.

The middle hammer is a double diagonal pein so flipping the hammer gives you either a N/S or E/W blow. It is aprox 46 oz.

The handles are oak on the 2 small ones and a piece of yew wood limb for the double cross. They are only roughed in at this point as I need to psych myself up and get out there and finish the final shaping and mounting on these handles. (I have to get past a mine field of butter tarts, short bread, pistachio halva and many other obstacles to achieve this however).

HammersBlkSmSM.jpg

This is gonna be tough as the butter tarts are saturated with an equal mixture of real maple syrup, cognac and dark rum. Everything else is just as alluring.

BtartsEtc2+Sm_2395.jpg

Oh, DANG! It's gotten dark outside.... and I smell fresh coffee brewing.... gotta run guys, I'll get to finishing those tarts er, I mean
handles soon!
(maybe next year?)

Seasons Greetings!

Ball Pein. Interestingly, it weighs 1 3/4 ounces on my postal scale. Have seen very few 'small' Ball Pein, and never a 1 3/4 ounce. No makers marks, probably a cheap one originally.

Old hammer at work, I suspect it could be left over from the shoe repair days. No markings that I can find.

What a great logo!

Jeff, I';m thinking upholstery

Mint, just a rounded taper with the Keyhole? Odd one for sure. Maybe a saw set tool and hammer? Round part of the key hole for either stress relief or maybe to clear carbide inserts?

I love hammers (almost as much as I love screwdrivers) and my son has gotten us both into blacksmithing…. This was my first attempt at making a rounding hammer and it was ugly but a lot of fun… I couldn’t even get my touch mark right! Andrew Larson was the instructor and his correct version is next to mine in the other pic so you see how far off I was in my attempt! His instructions were great, it was all in my lack of execution!

I've had this little hammer for years, but have never known what it's for. Any ideas?

I don't see any makers marks.

I think that is a saw set hammer. I would guess for the very large circular saws used in saw mills.
I looked in a couple Atkins catalogs, to no avail. This blog claims one. Scroll down to number four.

The legend of the GRIPNAIL. It has two magnets in the head. Yes, it actually does easily drive a straight nail with pretty good control, yes it drives two nails as easily as one, and yes it drives two nails of different sizes like a pro. The GRIPNAIL.

I had found this little Brass/soft face hammer at an estate sale yesterday, and Outlaw had asked to see more pictures of it, so...

No makers mark, but it is very well put together, with nice balance. I am guessing one or two ounces, which fills out my brass hammer needs quite nicely. Here is the whole stable:

Speaking of brass hammers....I have a nice Snap On brass hammer but it's beat to death on each side. Is there any reasonable way to clean it up without destroying it?
