I've been "into" mostly hacksaws for a few years. Now I'm also collecting handsaws. Here's a blurry pic of a few I picked up today. All but two are Disstons. The second from the top in the first pic is my favorite so far. Check out the close up of the handle.

I'd recommend looking for older saws in non rusty condition. You can often tell how old a saw is by how fancy the handle is.

Lots of info about older saws online, including at least one Facebook group. I've been accumulating saws for many years, have a hundred or so of the better ones that I have kept out of all of them. Early ones had nicer handles, fancier nuts, stamped info on the blade rather than etching, then fancy etching, and later very plain etching on the blade or maybe just an inked or painted stamp. An example of online info: http://www.disstonianinstitute.com/

There's a former short-lived handsaw thread here...

And @LesserSon has an excellent restoration thread, with lots of technical details and information, here...

In my world, it’s not how fancy the handle is. It’s how comfortable the handle is. If it fits your hand like a glove, I buy it. Even if not straight and rust free.

Maybe get a mod to merge them all?

From what I was told before, I don't think it's possible. Besides, @LesserSon 's is not, strictly speaking, a duplicate. It was intended to be about restoration practices and procedures. Because of the esoterica involved in that, it was more widely interesting to others for identification, brands, references, etc, and because GJ is GJ (genetically show n' tell), and his always welcoming personality, it attracted a number of other participants posting their collections. Having said that, I don't know that he would want them merged even if it was possible.

I have them both listed in the Index.
I admit that I should have found the older thread(s) before starting another.
No sweat, Tom. Given your stated interest and movement from hacksaw to handsaw, I genuinely thought you would find those threads interesting and very helpful. Admittedly, the ulterior purpose then becomes quite voluntary. You're only a few posts and photos in and could nip the bud yourself. Or not. We have plenty of splintered subjects. And sometimes it's all innocent and best paid plans and all that. That handsaw thread, for example, was started in 2018. Revived for a while in 2021. Bumped again by me with a nice E.C. Atkins backsaw with a beautiful medallion and a decent marking on the blade earlier this year, then it went dormant again. Some of this is it just not being a subject with proven staying power. Or maybe your enthusiasm could kick start it again! :)

Saw sets, another bottomless pit to explore.

Based on your photos, you might consider starting a "show your saw sets" thread.

I checked the sticky and did a title search and could not find one.

Nice collection. I've got half a dozen or so and it is interesting to see the different designs. It'd be a fun thread.

When I get into something new, like I now have handsaws, I think about all the ones I have moved out of my way at flea markets and yardsales to look at a hacksaw. Probably passed up a lot of good buys.
