If I were unable to fit them all in that drawer, I would consider myself as having too many hammers.

Careful now, you might get your GJ membership revoked for that kind of language[emoji1]

I think most would say you just need another toolbox!

I'm staring in awe... What a GREAT collection of body hammers! I'm also really impressed with the way they're stored and displayed. Easy to access, easy to find. Well done. Wow!

Jim,

Yes I forgot to put the source, this work of art is certainly not from me (obviously!). Herman Silver.

For us normal folk with 5-15 hammers rather than the 40+ he has could still take the concept of using two beefy dowels and a wood stand side and make a nice standup rack for the back edge of a workbench, which is similar to what I'll plan on doing once I start doing all the shop built-ins. I like the Family Handyman idea as well but I think this idea gives the best vision of what you've got, and getting it in and out easiest. I think hammers are a good thing to keep out and on some sort of rack. In my old shop I used to have them in a drawer and it was always a struggle and mess to dig out the one I wanted. Sometimes I actually forgot about a few of the ones I had cause they were buried so deep...

Just cause this is fun, here's a few more nice ideas I found on Pinterest:

What a fantastic idea on the pull-out! This jumped up to consideration:

This is sort of what I was talking about above, easy to see what you have, and to get it in and out:

This is probably what 90% of us have:

Thanks,

I haven't done it yet but I want to use a rotating counter display frame with a grid for mine, on castors so it can be dragged about, at the moment they are dumped in a couple storage boxes.

My hammers are just piled in a box under the workbench... Eventually I sort out something better.

This works pretty well for the pliers though. Or at least the vice grips.

Adam,

the last pic of the pile of hammers would insinuate that I have all of them in the same place, room, building. [grin]

Ha! yeah I know the feeling. Mine are hidden in some box somewhere waiting to be unpacked. Whenever I'm looking for one, I feel like this is all I can find!

Some great storage set ups here. I like the ones where the hammers are cheek to cheek instead of face to pein like I have because they take less space in a sense. Here's what I did to clear some drawer space, nothing fancy but it solved the problem. Just nails sticking out of a board.

At the other end I did the same thing but not as organized as I already had nails driven in the wall for other things.

Here's what I came up with, as space is a premium and all my tools have to hang on the wall. It's a 1/2" steel rod friction fit in two wooden blocks. The blocks are glued/screwed to a 3/4" pine board which hangs on a cleat.

Probably a little simplistic.. pegboard solutions (as well as a drawer full). I need to get more creative with help from this thread!

I use 2 angled nails to hang my hammers, and I always keep my vise grips in my tool box.

I out grew my nails in the wall set up in post #48 above but I have NO space to expand. I've been annoyed that I have 10' high pillars throughout the garage and one on each end of my bench that eat up valuable space. I fixed a solid ring clamp on one and made a second ring system that sits on it and spins creating this hammer rotisserie. It works great and holds 28 hammers.

Pretty snazzy if I do say so. Can you go into a little detail on how you made it? I can only assume that column runs from floor to ceiling, so how'd you get the ring on?

Thanks doc! Yes, they are floor to ceiling columns (I have an Italian garden motif shop). I used all salvaged material I had on hand. I'm learning to mig weld so don't scrutinize the welds too closely.

First I bent some 1/2" sq. tubing at a 12 1/2" ID diameter, cut in half then tacked on some threaded lugs on to join the 2 halves and clamp to the column.

Next I made a 2nd ring of 13" dia. from 3/4 square tubing but otherwise the same. It sat on top of the 1st. ring and spun.

I made a 3rd ring of 16" dia. adding spacers to tack it to the 13" ring so the hammers would be moved out from the column so they could be stacked facing into the centre and not sideways.

Originally I was going to use round pipe to hold the hammers but couldn't figure how to load them in and out and came up with the rectangular holders made from 1 1/2 x 3 1/8 light tubing. There is a 7/8" strip cut out of the centre where you load the hammer in and move it left or right. There are little bumps on the inner edges of the opening so the hammers don't slide off.
This is the crude jig I used to bend the tubing in the vice. I used it again here to put a radius on the rectangular holders.

Figured I would add this here as well for future reference.

Mine are stored in a deep drawer in my bottom box. Claw hammers are stored where they belong, with other woodworking tools in a wall cabinet.

The taper of the space between the tubes is genius.. I am stealing that idea.

Do you have any pics of the end plates? I'd like to use it for ideas on mine. I've got 40 or 50 hammer's. I'm limited to a 5ft span. Currently have 2 drawers overloaded and need to clean at least one out. I've thought about using EMT tubing(cheap) but not sure how much if any it would sag in the middle over time without a center support. Thanks
