So anyone have any interesting wall mounted storage racks for hammers or pliers / vice grips.

I am jonesing to build something and I have some scrap wood to use up. I would like to get my hammers and pliers out of my tool boxes, so any ideas.

I'd suggest youtube for ideas. Not only will they show you the finished product, usually they'll do a step by step so that anyone can copy their design. Majority of them are fairly simple as well.

Couple ideas I have seen on hammer storage, will implement one of them once I start setting up my shop:

The other idea I had is long lag bolts sleeved w/ 1/2" PVC tube, two of them next to each other, so you can put a line of 4-6 hammers together. I had an image of this but can't find it. I think it came out of Family Handyman magazine.

Thanks,
Adam

This is something I am going to fuss over a bit. It is actually a problem as we use about 2x as many as I made space for. I cut some pipe recently and am going to go back and re do the spacing to get way more in.

A lot of that has been remodeled a couple of times. I never did fix the hammer hangers though, its on my list.

Counter / work bench surface space is always at a premium, as is wall space, but I hadn't considered welding up a hanger. I bet rebar would be excellent for this. Hmm.

I don't need more ideas!

here's my hammer storage rack. pretty easy to make 2 round metal tubes with a taper to hold the smaller hammers to the biggest hammers :)

looks like I don't have enough hammers or time to polish them :)

My hammers are consigned to a large drawer until they go on wall hooks.

Plier storage,

... this is not wall mounted ... and certainly not interesting .. :D

... but Ive found it to be way better, than a tangled pile of pliers in a drawer, or trying to use so called, pegboard plier holders etc.,

No reason it couldnt go on a wall I suppose ?? sideways with the smaller stuff in the front row .. ?

I might jam it in a filing cabinet drawer as time goes on ... but constantly opening drawers looking for regular use items annoys me.

I only have a few hammers, but I use a magnetic block type of a thing. I believe it was initially intended for kitchen knives, but now holds hammers and pry bars.

The taper of the space between the tubes is genius.. I am stealing that idea.

I really like the looks of your pliers rack. I'm a big fan of vertical storage myself.

I don't have a particularly good set of hammers. But I will say that I hate having to fish hammers out of a drawer. I have mine up on wall -- pegboard style, but without pegboard.

Where did you get this rack?

I'm staring in awe... What a GREAT collection of body hammers! I'm also really impressed with the way they're stored and displayed. Easy to access, easy to find. Well done. Wow!

Your shop is always so clean and perfect.. Do you have another shop where you do actual work and have a giant mess, while this shop is the show shop? :D

Anyway, nice hammer rack.

Came here expecting to see this. Tom Lipton has got quite the hammer collection and rack, which is similar to the Herman Silver one shown above.

I really like laying my pliers down vs vertical storage on wall or workbench...it uses more space but It's quickest and easiest access.,plus looks the best IMO.

It's been awhile but I've been to Jack's place a couple times. He really does use it, gets it dirty but unlike me:dunno: he cleans it up when he's done.

Somewhere in this thread there's a picture of it a mess, others with the 911 on the lift and the engine pulled out, etc. It's definteiy, a "for real" shop. And that may be the nicest thing about it!

Not many hammers in my Toolroom ..... for now!
Pliers are a real pain ..... still looking for a better way to hang them.

What is this "he cleans it up when he's done" you speak of?

It implies finishing projects as well as cleaning. In my case I have unfinished projects everywhere and it is hard to move around enough to put things away. :willy_nil

The niceness of Jack's shop makes me want to look into the concept.

I know it's sacrilege to say this, but I'll do it anyway.

I have one drawer in my toolbox dedicated to hammers. I have one special made hook on the side of my toolbox for my favorite hammer (4lb sledge), and the rest go in the drawer.

If I were unable to fit them all in that drawer, I would consider myself as having too many hammers.
