I purchased one Easter using the 359.99 coupon, I am very impressed with the box for the cost. If you get one get some one to help you unload it, I did it by my self and it was not very fun, lol

They have it for $389 now, gloss only. Use a 20% off and it would come down to around $300.

I don't think you can use the 20 off on tool boxes anymore

I ended up getting one yesterday, always thought they were a good deal but I could never get past the matte finish. When I saw the "new gloss finish" in the latest flyer they sent me,I figured it was time to make the jump. My only issue is that it's already full,I'm going to need the add-on end cabinet :)

Finally got 2 of the 3 I bought stuck together. Got them for the $349 a few months back. Just got done building one 12' work bench and would love 3 more to put under it.

Was planning on using the nuts that are built in at the bottom to fasten the angle iron to and found that they just spin free when you apply much force to them so had to do it the hard way. Anyway 1/8" angle and 1/8" Diamond plate on the top, first laid some 1x5's down and screwed them to the top to make it all level, then screwed some OSB on that to mount the plate to. Plate is roughly 6" wider all the way around, no problems getting into the top drawers.

Also obviously had to swap the casters on one box so they would have the steers and solids at the same ends.

Just to clarify, the new box is the same dimensions as the old box? The old one was listed at 42" and the new one 44". Does the 44" include the handle?

I built a workbench so that the box would slide into and if it's now 44" wide I'm screwed.

For the 42" box, how much of it is already assembled? I only have a minivan right now so I'll probably end up taking off the drawers and whatnot to make loading easier.

They are fully assembled and have another wood casing around the cardboard box that they come in. You should be able to slide the box into the van while it still has the cardboard on it, just have to remove the wood part.

Anyone know how well these boxes hold up against chips? I bought top/bottom and the rolling cart. Noticed the paint rubbed off within days as the lid raised up against a shelf bracket.
Thinking of applying 3M 1080 carbon fiber to the front of the drawers and 3M clear guard everywhere else. I intend to keep this for 20 years or so as my Craftsman has been with me since 97. :)

I just picked one up yesterday. I got it all unpacked and in the garage and I noticed a dent on the back bottom corner. It looks as if a fork lift was setting it on the ground and as the forklift was backing up they raised the forks too soon and weren't clear. It is not that bad and at least it is on the back. I called the store today and the manager said if I didn't want to exchange it for a new one (because it is so heavy and I didn't have any help to load it) that they would knock another $70.00 off the price which brought it down to 279.99 because I used the 349.00 coupon. They were more than helpful and I am pleased with the customer service at the store. I will be returning in the near future for the top box which is 249.00 for new ITC members.

I just picked up the box today. They didn't think it would fit in my minivan, but I proved them otherwise:D

The sad part is, I've already outgrown it! I'm thinking of getting an add-on, but not sure if the price is worth it. Another 13-drawer should be plenty though.

nice deal! if the dent isn't too bad, maybe you can just hammer it out?

I was just looking at this. For my money I'd get the 56 incher. 22% more capacity than buying two 44" rollers. Capacities are off the HF website. Coupon prices of course. No idea what the best coupon is for the 44" top chest.

44" lower cabinet = 11,528 cubic inches @ $350
44" lower and top = 19,501 cubic inches @ $6xx
44" lower cab X2 = 23,056 cubic inches @ $700
56" lower cabinet = 28,240 cubic inches @ $700

Can anyone give me some suggestions on making/buying a stainless steel or wood top for this box. I just bought mine last week and i love it but I want to put a top on it. I know Snap On sells stainless steel tops for their boxes but I dont want to go that route. A nice piece of wood or something similar would be great. I know there is a website out there that will make it for you if you send them the specs but I dont want to take the chance of measuring it wrong and then getting an ill-fitting box.

i don't know anything about welding, so no idea about the stainless top. but if you're going for a wood top, you can buy some 1 or 1-1/2" thick stock from your local lumber yard. even if you can't find a piece that is long enough for the full width, you can cut some joints and glue two pieces together / this is not uncommon with some of the wood tops you might buy from a factory.

i like stainless steel tops if you have easy access to the underside to slide bolts/nuts under when you want to bolt something to your work surface. unless you have a 1/2" or thicker solid piece of metal, I don't think its a good idea to bolt something from the top with threads only. but otherwise, i think a wood top is easier to work with and you can use wood screws to attach things to the work surface.

if you don't anticipate attaching things to the work surface, you might just consider a solid tool mat like the stuff you would put inside the drawers.

It appears that they have lowered the drawer weight limit on the new gloss red cabinet. I did a post here if you are interested:

B (1) 74 lb.
C (5) 59 lb.
D (1) 74 lb.
E Top (1) 80 lb.

2008/2009 textured finish box:
A (5) 88 lbs.
B (1) 110 lbs.
C (5) 88 lbs.
E (1) 110 lbs.
F Top (1) 121 lbs.

Here are the pictures I took from earlier today of the display models that are being cleared from my local HFT store:

The condition is pretty good.. i didn't check all the drawers, but it mostly seems dusty/dirty but otherwise good.

Don’t have a garage in Arizona USA
33-1/2" without the wheels.

I had to fill 35-1/2" under my bench top -- it's a strong enough cabinet to do most of the support for a bench -- and I cut wood sections to go underneath and on top of the bench.

This is still very much in progress, but you get the idea:

can you make a write up for this? I want a workbench just like that, good work !
edit: I just noticed how long ago this is from so that bench was probably completed long ago

He posted some other pics in this thread where he painted the front of it also. quoting them below.

I'm actually glad you quoted his original reply even though it's old, because I've been wanting to do the same thing and this was a good visual. THANKS!

I wanted mine to match my Craftsman boxes visually -- because, well... I'm kind of nuts that way. So today I painted the drawers with Rustoleum black semigloss. I planned on painting the new bench 'Craftsman red' as well -- but now I'm thinking that re-doing the red might be too nuts. The two reds are different hues, and the U.S. General has less gloss. But the more I live with it, the less I mind it.

Problem is, I already took the U.S. General badge off, which is secured with both pins and black glue. No idea which trash can I put it in.

GlueMark1263862305.jpg

So as a temporary measure, I pried one of the Craftsman badges off my regular stack, and covered up the glue. I'd be happier with no badges at all, but this gets rid of the black glob.

Goofy, I know. But it's how my brain works.

Thanks very much, guys. As it happens, I don't have that bench anymore. I replaced it with a bench with deeper drawers.

The July issue of Chev High Performance has a $349 coupon that's good until 9/6, limit of 5.

I might pick up a second one to build into a bench like the one above except I would use the add on drawer section instead of the cabinet.

Nevermind - called a store and they won't ship open box :(
