I just purchased a One--Drawer Service Cart for $69.99, unpackaged it and noticed dents on the corners and paint chipping off. Its a 30" One-Drawer Service Cart; I bought the Five-Drawer Cart as well (haven't checked for defects yet).

As far as the One-Drawer goes, would I be better off getting the $99 4-Drawer Cart (note: its 4" less in length), leaving the top exposed?

I want a service cart with a exposed top in order to be better organized when working with the tools while going about projects around the premises.

Do you feel you need drawers? I have had both the open $39 30" 2 shelf and $49 3 shelf carts in my garage. My experience the 3 shelf open cart was better with the middle shelf and gave useful storage and tool placement for me. Obviously it's all unsecured though

I pile a lot of stuff on them :D

Do you feel you need drawers? I have had both the open $39 30" 2 shelf and $49 3 shelf carts in my garage. My experience the 3 shelf open cart was better with the middle shelf and gave useful storage and tool placement for me. Obviously it's all unsecured though

I'd like one drawer (not more) as this service cart will reside in the garage. I purchased the five drawer cart to store my most used tools. My intention for the one drawer service cart was to only store automotive fluids and such; and to place magnetic trays, tools and other such equipment as I work in the workplace.

I use the four drawer as my main work cart in my home shop. I keep a basic set of tools in it and then add the additional tools/supplies for the specific project I'm working on. Usually the additional tools go in the top tray and the supplies go in the bottom tray. The first thing I did after purchase was remove and discard the top as it was in the way of access to the top of the cart from all sides.

I guess it depends on how tall the items (fluids and the like) are, and if the four drawer has enough space (height) to store those things on the bottom tray.

I probably just committed a GJ coupon thread foul by discussing use of said product instead of coupons.

I'll even do one better

I put a tool organizer I had hanging around the garage on the two shelf cart. I'm glad I finally found a use for it. Someone gave it to me, I gave it away and they gave it back! Geez nobody wanted it. Now I can pile more stuff on and maybe even find what I'm looking for once in a while. :D

Well, I'll probably opt for the Black Four-Drawer Cart then.

I just returned from Harbor Freight and did a replacement on the $69 cart only to come across more corner dents and paint chipping. I wounded up returning this POS for a full refund.

I liked the $289 13 Drawer Chest to some extent, but didn't favor its narrowness.

I should probably just return the five drawer red cart and get the 44" cart and call it a day. I hope I don't exceed the set budget, not that I think I have already lol :lol:

I was trying not to get the black one as I already have the five-drawer one, which a lot of members here have. However, due to today's experience, I'm hoping it will work out with the black one. Never thought I'd consider "both" black and red tool carts

I needed something like this but with a drawer or two

Trading durability here it seems, but I don't expect to move the cart a lot.

When I work on the car, I'm working on the floor and use a dolly in conjunction with a Craftsman portable 4-drawer tool chest (portable hand-held); it works until you run out out of space, :)

I purchased the Black One (Particularly Item # 95659 as it had the most reviews), opened the box to inspect the cart through it before checking out at the cashier; everything looked fine until I got back to the garage only to be appalled by the fact that the bottom tray was dented, and the vertical links were not aligning to the bottom tray. Extremely disgusted.

First came the cheap $70 One Drawer Red Cart--I returned, exchanged, returned, refunded

And now comes this black one--will it turn out to a similar fate as the one drawer cart? Who knows...

How the he!! is this store still in business--selling junk, wasting their so-called customer's gas and time. I should just buy a Husky.

I'm not at all pleased my recent experience at HF--I'm thinking about terminating my relationship with them as a customer. Their customer service is really absurd. They don't know when its time to be sarcastic and when its time to be real.

I have the famous 5-Drawer Red cart still it its box and am very hesitant in unboxing it.

The low-star reviews on the black 4-drawer cart are pretty accurate.

If you're in the market for a portable cart, your best option is the 5-drawer red cart, "for now"

And you would think picking up your item at a store would eliminate much of the OTR damages one might experience with home truck delivery. Years back I bought one the greenhouses it was truck delivered and on unpacking found some parts were too damaged to use. I was told to send it back and upon return another one would be sent out. In my situation that time frame was not acceptable so I simply got a second greenhouse package and utilized the best parts from both kits and eventually returned all the rest for a refund. Guess you could try something like that if your wallet can handle it

I recently just bought another one of the small greenhouses and picked it up at a store because finally there is a new store located within a reasonable driving distance from where I live, but I also opened the box in parking to give a quick once over for any damages before I left. I have purchased a small haul of items over the past two months at HF for the business most met my expectation and though I looked over each item best I could, nothing was fully boxed like the tool chest. The 1/2 impact extensions really disappointed me when I went to use them just fit too loose. But the 1/2 torque wrench, 24 inch breaker bar, threadlocker ,small tool bags and mechanics gloves were all ok and gloves you do need to try on.

Sometime before the first greenhouse episode I also did a catalog return and replacement on one of those crummy rotating vises they sell And they sent it by USPS. 3 times my mail carrier had to haul that vise. I still remember that and I'll bet he does too! :D

Well, it turns out to partially my fault for not checking "thoroughly" before leaving the store. I'm glad I didn't opt for shipping, as the outcome could have been worse. I don't think item numbers have anything to do with the criticism this product gets. I'm going to get it exchanged and hope it turns out positive.

The warranty of this tool is a gimmick, no replacement parts whatsoever, I checked for similar carts from the big box stores, but couldn't find anything this cheap.

I'll be having the black and red carts from HF (4-drawer and 5-drawer) to complement one another.

I'll write a follow-up here as soon as tomorrow.

Here's an update. I replaced the cart today and got Item # 61634 instead. The difference is clearly noticeable. A few design changes, mostly good. The only downside is that instead of metal inserts which engage the lock upon closing the lid, HF decided to use plastic inserts instead.

Also, the bolts which secure the casters are a tad shorter compared to the original design. Also, instead of a hex bolt, HF decided to use Phillips Bolts (yes...Phillips Bolts) in Item # 61634--forthe casters. Also, this item has a US General PRO Logo on the top left of the cart instead of the US General on the right (HF added the word Pro in Item # 61634 for marketing reasons obviously).

The paint is a little better on Item # 61634, a very fine layer--no chipping whatsoever. HOWEVER, there are noticeable spots missing, thankfully, they are out of view once the cart is put together.

The metal feels more rigid and firm which is a good thing.

Packaging has been drastically improved. The manager allowed me to thoroughly check the cart before proceeding.

There was a minor dent on the top right front part of the cart--but was self-rectified once the vertical uprights bolted in conjunction with the cart and is now no longer noticeable.

Remember to grease the pivot on the hinges, and apply lithium grease on the ball bearing slides.

All in all, I would rate this cart 4 stars out of 5. Also, no rubbery smell :D
I did scratch a small part on the back of the cart (while placing and aligning the drawers onto the resting plate), I would strongly recommend removing all the drawers prior to placing the cabinet onto the resting plate. Everything appears symmetrical--drawer slides are immaculate and perfect--the sliders are not bent (they were in the original cart I received).

Bolts are a little better quality--stiff overall

Don't worry about paint--somewhere down the road we all will strip off the old paint and apply a whole new coat along with a clear coat / sealant.

As you use this cart in the long run, scratches, dings, and nicks are inevitable as in our tools :lol:

Wow now that you mention those subtle differences looking online I quickly noticed the different name badge placement with both the 61634 and the 61952


Seems a lot of Chinese sourced products use cross head truss style screws for assembly instead of hex I would assume both metric thread and nut sizing?

I will take a trip to the local store soon maybe even sometime over the coming weekend and I will specifically look for the different stock numbers.

I am also curious to what are the heights (what I would call depth) of the different drawers anyhow especially the two larger ones. I seem to only see the widths, 12 1/4" and 26" plus the front to back length 14 1/2" which they refer to as depth advertised.

It's better to appreciate the depth and size of the drawers in person at the store. The size is the same across all three SKU # numbers. However, keep in mind, that the floor / display model is likely the original sku # 95659.

The reviews on Harbor Freight are surprisingly accurate--I wouldn't get SKU # 61952. With 95659, your mileage may vary due to it being old stock and potentially previously returned / tampered / damaged. The 61634 is the sweet spot and again, we get what we pay for; don't expect 100% perfection :D .

I can see trusses failing at some point, but no worries, a couple of bolts and nuts (sourced locally from your local hardware store) can be a one-time permanent solution.

You will need 10mm and 13mm wrenches for assembling SKU / Part # 61634 (preferably open/box flex wrenches and / or flex head ratchets).

Sku # 95659 uses only 13mm nuts.

You may also need a rubber / non-marring mallet, just in case you come across a stubborn bolt which doesn't go into the hole because of subtle differences in aligning the individual parts of the cart.

After assembly you'll be left with 3 additional nuts, bolts, and washers as spares

Other things to note which may make your assembly experience pleasant are as follows,

- Assembly the casters first using the philips bolts (included in the brown box situated in the lowest most drawer)
- Then affix the vertical stems "outside" of the bottom shelf (should align "almost" perfectly
- Then affix the horizontal stems which reinforce the vertical stems together
- Do the same for the other side
- Engage the lock on the swivel casters before proceeding with the following step
- Place Drawer assembly between the notches within both sides of the horizontal stems
- I'd encourage you to tighten down every nut and bolt prior to seating the drawer assembly in place
- You may need use gentle persuasion in order to make fine adjustments when putting the drawer assembly in place--the vertical stems flex to a certain limit, and each corner can be nudged to get the whole drawer assembly in place
- Make sure all drawers are removed prior to placing drawer assembly in final resting position
- Before tightening remaining nuts and bolts near the lid area (corner braces), make sure the lips from the topmost part of the drawer assembly are overlapping with the corner braces
- Upon tightening everything, grease up the ball bearing slides, and trusses, reinsert the drawers, and you should be all set.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Diablo "better than goodyear" rubber hoses advertised in the current mailing?

I don't, but I just recently purchased the Good Year from Amazon. I saw the Diablo hose in person at HF and thought the quality was more or less same. Price does vary though. I think the quality of the crimped ends and connectors will dictate the overall quality of both of these air hoses. :)

There are several fasteners held by plastic bits on the back-end of the cart which tend to loosen overtime--it will cause the entire lid to shift around not stay in one place when in closed position.

Also, there are noticeable bubbles in the paint, not in its entirety, but in some spots.

i will note that the 26" stack, which is regularly 389$, is again on sale for 289$ for this weekend. the coupon is on the hf homepage (and the email i got). if you cannot see it, let me know, an i will post a copy.

Well I took my trip to HF today to check out those two mobile carts and also browsed the HD and Sears store looking for a halfway decent 26" 4 or 5 drawer roller cabinet in same general price range because I think that is more what I really need. So ya I did see first hand how the red cart is that much larger. Couldn't check the drawers on the red box seems even though the top was up all the drawers were locked? :headscrat and of course no key anywhere to be found either. So I am going to take a pass on either of these right now.

I'm not knockin it at all but with those big flat lids it does kind of looks like a parts washer :D

I do appreciate all the first hand purchasing experience and the details of the product review. Sounds like your generally satisfied with it and that's what counts.

Now while I was at the store today I did notice the Multi Purpose Workbench unit on display. I was surprised it felt as stable as it did though the drawer bottoms were pretty weak, the rest generally seemed to be ok. Side outlets, overhead shelf with light, pegboard back, two slim drawers and lower storage shelf quite a little package for $99 (sign did say its a limited time special price).

Of course you just cant help to gravitate to the roller cabinets and tool chests I have agree the 26" combo is a real winner for the money but its way more box than I'm needing at the moment too bad there isn't a smaller base option available from US General.

It's better to appreciate the depth and size of the drawers in person at the store. The size is the same across all three SKU # numbers. However, keep in mind, that the floor / display model is likely the original sku # 95659.

The reviews on Harbor Freight are surprisingly accurate--I wouldn't get SKU # 61952. With 95659, your mileage may vary due to it being old stock and potentially previously returned / tampered / damaged. The 61634 is the sweet spot and again, we get what we pay for; don't expect 100% perfection :D .

I can see trusses failing at some point, but no worries, a couple of bolts and nuts (sourced locally from your local hardware store) can be a one-time permanent solution.

You will need 10mm and 13mm wrenches for assembling SKU / Part # 61634 (preferably open/box flex wrenches and / or flex head ratchets).

Sku # 95659 uses only 13mm nuts.

You may also need a rubber / non-marring mallet, just in case you come across a stubborn bolt which doesn't go into the hole because of subtle differences in aligning the individual parts of the cart.

I bought one of these about a year ago and I'll give it about a "3 star" rating. It's worth the $99 I paid for it on sale, but it does have its issues.

The ratings on the website refer to problems ranging from bolt hole misalignment to paint flaking off to the problem with mine, which is that the drawers scrape against the ones below. It is not bad enough to keep the drawers from closing, but will eventually rub the paint off where they touch. But, the cart seems sturdy enough and will hold a good amount of tools if you are using it as a service cart in addition to your main box. Other than for the professional, it should suffice.

Well I took my trip to HF today to check out those two mobile carts and also browsed the HD and Sears store looking for a halfway decent 26" 4 or 5 drawer roller cabinet in same general price range because I think that is more what I really need. So ya I did see first hand how the red cart is that much larger. Couldn't check the drawers on the red box seems even though the top was up all the drawers were locked? :headscrat and of course no key anywhere to be found either. So I am going to take a pass on either of these right now.
I think you're referring to the 5-drawer mobile cart? With the lid up, you can open the drawers, by reaching just under the edge of the drawer they you pull it out by, and over to the right side, there's a small latch that you have to slide about 3/4 inch, to open the drawer. These are added so that the drawers don't accidentally open as you roll the cart around. It's actually a pretty good feature. I own several of these carts and buy them for the shop. They hold up well, and they're a really good value.

DFB, I just got to finishing the assembly of the 5-Drawer Red Cart yesterday, and I'm not entirely pleased by the overall finish. The quality of metal stands out--its tough and hard to beat for the price. However, you can spot imperfections on the overall paint finish as well as the holes to line up the each part. There is a particular orientation to follow when lining up each part, however, I still had to use an alignment punch to get things right--otherwise, I would have probably resorted to enlarging the hole by a tad bit as other members here do.

Also, following the instruction manual is at your own discretion. Some like to install the vertical posts on the four corners first prior to putting on the bottom shelf and casters.

Its also good practice to organize each nut and bolt in their respective category, because the longer bolts (as well as washers and nuts) are for the casters, whereas the rest are for the other parts. Sad, but true--Harbor Freight decides to create frustration for the DIY'er--the bolts for the casters were found in the bag specific to the posts and other parts of the service cart--how can they not get this right from the get-go?

I'll need to re-check my assembly of the Black Cart now, just to make sure there wasn't any mix-up.

As a result of the trouble faced during alignment, the two front posts on front of the cart are not flush against the drawers. There is a small gap as you look from top to bottom. On the front right corner of the top lid, there is an extra dab of red paint, which for some reasons appears to be quick patch before being placed in the box for shipment overseas. It is careless and shocking from a customer point of view. HF is a dishonest and shabby business (I've seen the elderly being taken advantage off by HF employees--enticing them to signing up for Insider Club Coupons). It's not worth going back for a replacement, as I might get something worse in return--I didn't pay a massive fortune for this product. Yet, there is a feeling of slight guilt especially after crossing the double-digit figure mark. Mind you, this cart costs around $180 after taxes ($165 + Taxes). Let's not forget the fold up tray which costs an extra $25 (after applying 20% / 25% off coupon).

The Black 4-Drawer Cart is the best bang for the buck. For $99 you can't complain. The guilty feeling of spending so much on a product like this doesn't exist on the Black Cart. Even though the space for storing tools in the Black Cart is a fraction of that of the red cart, I'd rather pick up two Black Carts rather than One Red and One Black. Better Casters are available online and other big box stores.

It's unfortunate to say, I have decided to stay away from Harbor Freight. They are taking advantage of customers by selling items which are not as described / advertised. If you look at the floor models of the item they sell, they are based on initial designs which were well-regarded and praised to some extent. However, when you, the customer--unpack and assemble the item, you realize that changes were made overtime, and that the quality is sub-par to what was seen in the store. And yet, we all still pay the same darn price. Also, Harbor Freight's multiple-item numbers for the same item raises a red flag.

Husky's and other big-box store brands, probably have better quality control, but remember, that the metal used is likely thinner-gauge, and less durable compared to HF. Price is also another issue. I suppose e can't have everything in that given figure.

Holding onto these two carts will be reminder to me that going the cheap route is not always the best option. I would have gone to an estate sale, flea market, or garage sale, to pick up a used cart--taken the pain-staking effort for refurbish the item for my self-satisfaction. :lol:

Oh well, looking at the bright-side, I now have some extra storage to fiddle around with.

I'm not knockin it at all but with those big flat lids it does kind of looks like a parts washer :D

I do appreciate all the first hand purchasing experience and the details of the product review. Sounds like your generally satisfied with it and that's what counts.

Now while I was at the store today I did notice the Multi Purpose Workbench unit on display. I was surprised it felt as stable as it did though the drawer bottoms were pretty weak, the rest generally seemed to be ok. Side outlets, overhead shelf with light, pegboard back, two slim drawers and lower storage shelf quite a little package for $99 (sign did say its a limited time special price).

Of course you just cant help to gravitate to the roller cabinets and tool chests I have agree the 26" combo is a real winner for the money but its way more box than I'm needing at the moment too bad there isn't a smaller base option available from US General.

I just purchased the red HF tool cart, and had none of your issues and am very happy with it.

Haha sure I have 40 years worth of tool acquisitions and I also know my Milwaukee cordless tools are all made in China too! :D

In fact I still have an SK 3/8 drive metric socket set with the original steel storage box along with a Williams 10" adjustable wrench I bought off my younger brother when he joined the army back around 1981 and sold his Yamaha IT dirtbike.

And actually I run a cheap tool business as side work in season at a local flea mkt. these days And does it keep me busy...dang everybody loves cheap tools. A lot of Tekton stuff among other brand names like Great Neck, Jorgeson, B&G gloves, Dewalt, Diablo, True Value, Ace even had some Husky and Craftsman

Mostly closeout stuff. :beer:

Gosh I can even remember Harbor Freight when they sent out folded printed sheets in an envelope ..ahh those where the days :thumbup:

IMO you get exactly what you pay for with HF's prices :headscrat:

And Winlinmac I do find lots of great buys at my flea mkt
