Harbor Freight "Predator" engines on ebay

I'm quite intrigued by something relating to ebay. Maybe there's someone out there who knows what's going on. I recently purchased one of those Harbor Freight Predator 6.5 HP replacement engines for my old Troy Bilt tiller restoration project and it works just great. However as I did some searching online to see what the availability of aftermarket service parts is for that engine I noticed something a bit peculiar on ebay.

There have been discussions relating to the logic of ebay sellers selling HF merchandise at or above HF store cost. But I found that there are numerous ebay sellers who are selling this SAME Predator engine, brand new (so they say), BELOW retail cost as "buy-it-now" for prices like $59, $69, $79, AND they're including FREE shipping AND some of the sellers show a "quantity available" with numbers like 10, 15, 20, or 30. Really?

So I got to thinking, how the heck to do these guys do it? The normal price for that particular engine at the store is $120 without coupon, or $100 with a coupon that's usually available. But these ebay sellers are selling them for mere $60 and they're absorbing the cost of shipping. They indicate that the engines are all "new" and in "unopened" boxes. Something just doesn't add up here. I know, you're thinking am I just that blind. The merchandise obviously "fell off the truck". But that many? And on a regular basis?

Granted you get no warranty from the ebay seller. And they're not just located in one locale. I find such sellers of this particular item all over the country. If this merchandise really is in fact stolen, does HF corporate and their loss-prevention department merely turn a blind eye and ignore it? To me it sounds like many an ebay seller has found yet another lucrative cash-cow to take advantage of. Hmmm ??? ... If HF really does legitimately sell these engines brand new, in an unopened box, to ebay sellers for pennies on the dollar then I want in. That would be the best thing since sliced bread and 4-wheel brakes ... cha-ching!

My never ending curiosity has once again been activated. Any thoughts as to how these guys on ebay do it?

Ed

Not really sure. Aside from them potentially being stolen, perhaps they buy them in bulk at a greatly reduced rate?

I tried to find what you were talking about but couldn't. From the pic in the link below you would think the engine was for sale, but it's actually just a new take-off fuel tank.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Predator-212cc-6-5-HP-Engine-Gas-Tank-Fuel-Tank-OEM-R210-III-69730-69727-/222286492366?hash=item33c14eb2ce:g:OzoAAOSwOdpX04xw&vxp=mtr

A few days ago I found their tool box supplier on Alibaba. The 44" unit runs from $180 to $240 apiece depending on how many you purchase. Minimum purchase is 20 boxes, I think. Maybe someone was buying engines from HF's supplier and reselling them.

These listings are from all over the US. Maybe there is some inside super-secret Harbor Freight distribution logistics flaw that these guys all know about and are capitalizing on?

I wouldn't trust them. The feedback on all those sellers are very low. A couple of them have not done transactions in over a year. One feedback on one of them said that the brand of the engine wasn't the same as listed.

Don't ask.
Could be engines that HF rejected or didn't accept delivery for some reason. Stuff happens, lost shipment finally turned up, importing issues (paperwork not right).
Also could be the manufacturer has come up with a way to out cheap harbor freight and is selling clones of the clones.

Probably direct shipped from China.

Last month I ordered a pack of two lawnmower air filters from an eBay seller. Price was something like $2.50 INCLUDING SHIPPING. I didn't notice that they were to be shipped direct from China, but became suspicious when the expected delivery date was a month out.

The package eventually arrived, with a lot of Chinese writing on it and a customs declaration as a "gift"

The filters seemed to fit ok, construction was solid, and they beat the estimated delivery date by a week.

I don't know how they get away by declaring the package as a gift, thought. Also don't know how one can ship a package around the world for $2.50, including product cost.

My thoughts are that this business model if successful, is going to put the hurt on a lot of importers and will even affect Amazon's business model.

I ran into a lady once at the HF by my house that was buying multiple cartloads of items that day. I started to BS with her and found out that her business is to buy items at full retail and then sell them on EBAY and CL for a modest profit.

Never....Never underestimate how many idiots there are in the world that won't do any due diligence when making a purchase.

Wow I **** at searching apparently; thanks for the links!

I don't like the limited feedback but people are buying these things so if they're all scams then the truth will come out soon.

And just when I thought getting one of those badboys for $100 was a deal $70 is even better. I put one of these things in my father's power washer a few years ago and its been perfect; no issues whatsoever.

^Thats for the exhaust only not the engine as well. And IDK about you but if IM using one for power equipment such as a power washer leaf vac tiller etc I want the muffler. Go cart mini bike something elsewhere more power would be nice then sure maybe granted I'd just build my own. Those welds do look surprisingly nice though ;)

Reading owns me!

Agreed. Now way I'd want a loud-as-hell power washer. Mine's loud enough with a muffler.

That looks extremely sketchy.

Note the word "coupon".

Note the company that supposedly lists it makes aluminum tool cases and no mention of tool boxes. Then, most of the listing is about tool cases. The parts about the cabinet are all wrong - 8 key locks, abs top, etc.

I noticed that, but there were others. Just takes more searching. They even use the same picture as the HF website. Shady ain't the word... :D

I would guess HF returns.
Retailers are typically good at selling, but have no idea how to handle returns.

I was once offered a consulting job at solving QVC's returns "problem"
It was a 300-foot-wide wall of 40 foot containers with no records of what was in them.
I thanked them, but said no.

See this article: http://www.breitbart.com/radio/2016...nefits-china-at-expense-of-american-business/

There are likely plenty more articles on the subject if you're interested.

im new here just joined so i could chime in this conversation. I purchased one of those predator engines off of ebay . it was the 301cc 8hp model . for $119.00 buy it now price seller listed a qty of 20 not the $240 listed on harbor freights website. I was a bit skeptical but figured i would be protected by paypal. shortly after receiving the tracking number ebay eliminated the listing . they did not give any reason. others had purchased the same engine from the same seller . ebay removed their feedback. the transaction went through and the motor shipped and was as described. the oddities about the transaction were the seller was from texas and the item was drop shipped directly from harbor freight in south carolina. so somthing is not right but i got the item .

The US Postal Service raised the Priority Mail rates this year, a substantial increase with no online discount for printing you own labels with postage. So, in effect, the individual who buys from a small domestic business (or individual) is subsidizing the largest sellers and Chinese businesses who get "free" or very reduced rate shipping. Something needs to change.

Is this what passes for news these days? It doesn't even explain why the deal exists.

It's breitbart, which by just the name or link should violate the "no politics" policy of the form. Not trying to be "mean", it's just what they are about.

I just picked up a great running Honda GX commercial grade horizontal shaft engine for $25 off CL. They are $500 new. When someone takes a lousy, dark pic with their phone, it's amazing how the item goes unsold. I didn't even see the listing until a month later, but he still had it.

No stinkin' HF engine for me. Also, those sorta more consumer grade Honda vertical shaft engines can be found all day long for $40 or so. I bought a non-working pressure washer for $30 (Honda engine ran great, but the pressure washer didn't work). I sold the Honda engine for $60 (ran perfect), scrapped the pressure washer unit, and I made a nice water carrier with the cart part.

Don't you get a small discount if you use Stamps.com or print off the eBay postage page (Pitney Bowes)? I think it's only like 10%.

But yep, shipping is pricey. A small flat rate box (tiny) is what $6.80? Relatively small shipments from out west are $25 or so. I bought a Wii console for $20 off ebay, and the shipping was $42 from California (twice what the item cost!).

Very strange. But what you're saying is that the engine arrived and it works? Was it in the original packaging?

Engine arrived in original unopened box . no oil no sign of gasoline . I did order the 6.5 hp from another seller for $69.09. fed ex tracking show delivery tomorrow. I have no idea how they could come directly from harbor freight unless they were purchased with a fraudulent credit card . seller of the 6.5 hp sold 20 at 79.99 first then listed another 40 at $69.09 seller didn't have much feedback but now has responses from 15 people that have received their engines with no issues . the 8hp one i purchased makes me wonder about the credibility of ebay since the recent feedback was retracted and i could not leave the seller feedback. but it does seem odd that there are multiple sellers listing these engines with little or no feedback for such a cheap price .

You are not paying for shipping at $42 for Wii box (unless you got it overnight), you are paying for part of the sellers profit. That's why eBay now charges fees on sale price and shipping fees.

You really need to look at the combined price (Sales + shipping) for products on eBay to fully understand the cost.

These could be inventory surplus either from HF or the manufacturer in China. If the manufacturer rented a cargo container to send them to the US, this is plausible.

Did they provide a receipt? I would guess it would be on the outside of the box in a clear pouch (if they did). I would be interested in what it says was paid for it and if it says whom paid for it.

I am not exactly sure how much a Wii weighs, but a 10lb package from CA to OH costs $38.60.

for what its worth the seller that sold me the 6.5hp for $69.09 last week that's due to arrive today started another auction for the same price this morning . shorty after purchasing another motor this morning ebay cancelled the purchase and stated that a third party used the sellers account . ebay removed any existence of the auction from the first motor and removed all of the sellers feedback. I went into paypal and the email address for both auctions were not the same . Ebay must be having security issues . there seems to be a fair amount of sellers with no recent feedback selling these motors .

I was curious as to how that was going to play out. I've been the victim of bait and switch when it comes to new car parts on ebay a couple times.

No. Flat Rate boxes will get you there for less than $15-18.

Jobbers. They buy returns from HF, Northern, etc and make the needed repairs and sell them at a discount. They buy the engines, jacks, leaf blowers, whatever by the pallet which is why they have quantities of 20, 10, etc.
