I don't notice when I start bleeding till I make a huge crime scene. Scares the hell out of the MRS.. if she happens on the scene and can't immediately locate me.

Reminds me of the time my uncle cut into his hand on his table saw... at 10pm... (everyone was asleep)... left "a crime scene" in the ONE bathroom in the house before driving himself to the hospital without saying anything to anybody. Back in the days when you had to call around to hospitals and police departments to find elderly missing people.

You are getting OLDer Jim.... perhaps a loved one should get you one of those "button things" you can wear around your neck... you know... in case you've "Fallen and can't get up".

A grand child helper is also handy for this. No one can can scream "Grandma! Gramps cut his finger again!" quite as loud as a youngster. FYI, alert dogs are easier to train sometimes...

We used to have to find someone to go with my dad to his mountain property with him. Just to make sure he didn't get on the roof to clean up the pine needles. If he were alone, he would be up there in an instant. His balance was the reason, he wouldn't admit to any "limitations"...

Yea but... (talking from experience)... Press one of those neck button things... you get visited by:
1. Police
2. Rescue (fire department)
3. Ambulance

All with pretty red/blue flashing lights and beautiful loud sounding "alarms". Alerting near family and neighbors to a possible "Photo event" for social media sharing.

Your suggestion would keep the response intimate and personal. Mine would create a Media Circus event.

I'm all about "The Circus"

Jay, not directly but yes, you know who I was thinking about the whole time I was wrapping my fingers.
20210830_152101.jpg
I have three 5 gallon buckets of pureed pears
20210830_152240.jpg
Dose everyone here have a black and decker food processor in there shop

Pines and S&A,
I made a pretty good trail from the back of the shop out to the water hose, then I washed out the evidence. This piece of 1" angle is what got me, I picked it up and let it slide through my hand

When it hit the spot, part of my anatomy dissapeared (wink) and I instantly remembered cutting it off a frame and saying to my self, grind that off before someone gets hold of it.
I'll consider one of those button thingys but the 13 grandkids are staying in chicago, I dont need that kind of interruption on a daily basis. Dalton or Donnie call everytime I blow something up so I think they are already watching me.

ouch, seeing the jagged metal tab makes me "cringe" too.

At least the metal looks clean. Your tetanus shots up to date? They say every 10yrs...

The last thing I would want is a streaming camera in my shop. That would end my hiding out there and acting like I was working.

The laquer thinner wasnt bad, I'm used to it but the sodium metabisulfite powder that I use to wash my buckets and wine tools about killed me, diluted its fine but I got some of the straight powder on a rag that I used to dry my hands before I put my gloves on. Not fun.
As of last night I cooked the pears to 170⁰ and put the slurry in buckets to cool. I now have about 15 gallons of pear mash in buckets, I'll mix and pitch the yeast this afternoon.

Question:

I thought you needed to let it ferment to get the alcohol? Then some magic happens and the longer you let it ferment and how you distill it, type of barrel etc all determines the alcohol percentage?

or do you get a pre-made packet of "14 proof" and just add it to the mix? Like a taco seasoning?

Also, don't you need a cellar/cave or some place to make it?

He has that "room underground"... My guess he is showing a picture from other wine he has made. Yes the alcohol happens during fermentation (after the yeast).

I would have converted that underground room into "a Red Room" from 50 shades of Grey... with an X frame center piece. But that's me. The room looked big enough to probably also have a flogging bench...

Pines, get hold of yourself.....wait, not that way!
Shorty, I'm in.

S&A. The first reading is potential alcohol by volume
20210831_202215.jpg
You take your first reading when it is stabilized in the bucket at 60 deg. Mine was a little warmer than that so I need to consult a heat conversion chart to get an exact reading. Warmer = higher ABV alcohol by volume. So it will be higher when finished.
20210831_205826.jpg
If all readings are taken at 60⁰ then this formula works, it came with the hydrometer.
I'll take a final ABV with a spirit refractometer to know exactly, I'm shooting for 8 to 10 percent ABV.
20210831_203435.jpg
I bloomed the yeast tonight, the water has to be between 95⁰ and 104⁰ to activate correctly, I added some of the liquid from the pears to this to help feed the yeast. It set this way for 30 minutes.
20210831_205100.jpg
The yeast was divided equally by volume to the four buckets.
Now we wait!!!

Thanks HJ. Now I'm just math confused LOL. That is like chemistry and stuff.

I know that in reality, wine/beer etc is not rocket science, but it sure confuses me fast.

FYI, my ex-wife is a chemist, I always just made her do the math...

AND crazier still, I have spent the last 30yrs handling data for environmental chemistry labs. I never claimed to understand what it all meant, I just know how to store data and retrieve it when needed. My math confusion has been the main reason I never moved into the actual laboratory (running instruments etc).

Funny story. Back in 1994, we were trying to figure out what kind of business she could start that used her chemistry degree, but got her out of the lab business. I suggested opening a micro whiskey distillery, at the time, micro beer was just starting to really boom. Her reply was: "who would want booze that was made on a small scale"? and "that would take years to age properly". Meanwhile, in an ironic twist, her current (the 3rd one) husband does make home distilled whiskey.... WTF huh?

Not much going on today, I ran another circuit from the breaker panel to the kitchen, this allowed me to seperate half of the outlets to a new circuit. Pat uses two crock pots or a crock pot and an electric skillet at times and pops the breaker so this will hopefully stop that from happening. It all went well, I have a 60" flex bit and I ran it through the outlet box down to the plate where It drilled a 1/2" hole through to the crawl space. There is a hole in the web of the bit where I tied the wire to it and pulled it back out to the box. It was a straight shot over to the basement and to the panel.

Uncle willie, 👍👍 you betcha. Pat can fill that electric skillet full of fried fish without a worry now.

Kirk, it quit today and is supposed to be dry for 7 to 10 days, temp is supposed to be near 60 in the morning, Pat and I will need a blanket with our coffee to set on the porch in the morning. We got 11 3/4" of rain in August should have been 3"

Riv, not a problem Sir, I have 15 gallons cooking and looking for something else to put in another bucket, I would love to score about 100 lbs of muskidines, my all time favorite wine.

I just did my nightly check on the wine, the small bucket is percolating perfectly but the three big buckets appear to be stuck so I pitched some champagne yeast at them just now, I'll recheck in the morning.

Jim, have you ever made corn cob wine?

An old buddy in Kentucky got me started on it.
I haven't made any since he passed away.
Might need to make a batch next summer in his honor.

Ok I played with my buckets again today, they still were not bubbling so I cleaned a 5 gallon glass demijohn and transferred the wine musk to it and put the airlock in place and it started bubbling right away. This tells me the lids on my new buckets do not seal correctly. I'll transfer the other two buckets tomorrow.
I got the grass mowed and sprayed the weeds today also, looks pretty good for a change.
