Has anyone down a rectangle of fluorescent lights?

There's a picture in a book back home that I can't find on the internet, but a NASCAR shop used a series of fluorescent lights arranged in a rectangular shape, then hung from their high ceiling directly above the car. I thought it looked like a great idea, but haven't seen it duplicated anywhere else.

I acquired a bunch of 4 foot, 4-bulb recessed fluorescent fixtures (like you would see in any office building), but in my low basement, the sides block a lot of the light. If I was to gut a few of these fixtures and make a rectangle that would surround my motorcycle lift, would that give me a good amount of light? Or is it a better idea to just space them out normally?

It may not be practical, but it looked damned cool... :D

I think exactly the opposite.
I think it incredibly practical,
and wouldn't look right.

Hmm. I will try to get a picture when I get home, but I thought it looked fairly clean and well-done. Maybe a better option would be track lighting on either side...

Problem is, because of the unfinished ceiling and concrete walls, the light doesn't have many surfaces to bounce off.

That's more or less what exactly I have. I have (3) 8' T12 fixtures above my car, one along each side of it & one in front and (2) 4" fixtures behind it, with the rail for the garage door opener splitting them.

There's a lot more light in that shop than those fancy flo-squares. Looks decorative to me, IMHO.
