I found a light online that looks like it would be perfect for my basement, but have only found one source and no reviews. It is a surface mount LED that mounts to a J box, and looks like a recessed light.

Has anyone used this light, or know of anything similar? I don't have the height for a traditional can, this light looks perfect for my use.

These are really popular in new home construction and even some light commercial construction. Very convenient. All the large, well known manufacturers make a version of this. The one in your link is a cheaper, DIY, no-name version, but that doesn't mean it wont suit your needs.
For comparison, a 60w incandescent bulb delivers 800 lumens. This one is 570 of LED, so probably very similar in output.
You will likely find a name brand at the local big box store or an electrical supply house.
Good luck,
CD

I put one in for a friend, you need a shoehorn or a BFH to get the guts into an older electrical box. You may need to use a new box.

Can you elaborate? I just installed a similar LED flush mount fixture and it was just like any other fixture with just 2 wires coming out of it.

There are a bunch of these $25 units at our local Sams. Not as thin as the OPs post, but not very thick. Put in her big closet, lots of light. Mounted right to the ceiling box, 3 wires. Light weight and a bit flimsy but it works. The shade part unscrews from the base, have to be careful not to crush it with your mighty forearms.

This one had a transformer or power supply on the under side that fit up into the electrical box and used a strap that held the unit up flush.

Home Depot and Lowes both sell versions of a 6" light like this for about $20. They are sold under house brands rather than a real name brand.
